IWA RNING I
Protect personnel from lightning.
The missile on the EL is susceptible to lightn ing strikes. This
threat is greatly increased when the missile is vertical. When
the commander determines that the threat of an electrical
storm is imminent, he will insure that the missile is lowered and
personnel are cleared from the immediate vicinity of the equip
men! when such action will not interfere wi t h accomplishment
of his mission.
I CAU~IO N I
1- 2. Misfire.
A misfire condition exists when a tactica l missile fails
to achieve lift-off after the FIRE switches are pressed the
second time. A misfire occu rr ing before cable mast ejection 1s considered to be safe. A misfire occurring after
cable mast ej ection is considered to be unsafe, since a
haza rdous situation, such as motor explosion, may exist.
If th e nor ma l seq uence of events does not occur after
the FIRE switches are pressed on t he remote f iring box ,
the un it commander is notified immediately; then, as di-

2-1. Surface Damage Criteria.
1...J
a. General. This paragraph specifies the surface damage criteria for accepting or rejecting the first and second
stages, the guidance section, and the warhead section.
The depth of surface defects can be determined with a
standard dial-indicating depth micrometer. The maximum
depth limits for scratches and gouges listed below are
based on the assumption that the surface finish in the
damaged area has not been removed. If the finish is re
moved, the allowable depth is 0.003 inch less than speci
fied. This limitation does not apply to dents. Refer to
TM 9-1100-37512, TM 9-1410-37534/l, and TM 91410-3751
35 for additional damage criteria information.
b. Definitions.
( 1) Crack. A partial fracture; when the part is not
completely divided.

BLANKETS
2-4. Use of Blankets.
- I._/
a. General. All missile sections can be stored in containers at temperatures as low as -31.7C (-25F)
without use of heating blankets.
b. First and Second Stage Blankets. First and second
stages in containers can be exposed to temperatures as
low as -53.8C (-65F), with wind velocities up to
40 mph (64 kmph), for up to 1 week after removal of
power for heating or after a temperature drop, providing
the sections have previously been conditioned to -6.7C
(20F). Hydraulic actuator blankets are used during the
confidence and standard countdown when the ambient ternperature is -6.7C (20F) or below and 30 minutes prior to
starting the power station when the ambient temperature is
-31.7C (-25F) or below. Refer to TM 9-1410-375-12 for
procedures for installing and removing first stage and second
stage blankets.
