OVERVIEW:
Objective:
This document is meant to standardize the way Infonet support personal troubleshoots
and maintains the passport network. This document will cover how the Passport nodes
are commissioned, how the Passport trunks are monitored and maintained and how the
hardware maintenance is performed.
Background:
Now That the Passport network is fully deployed, the NMC, GTS and others will now
have to monitor and maintain service levels on this cutting edge technology. Some old
type of network support procedures will no longer be applicable and yet others remain
the basics today as they did with TDM.
This document will try to dispel myths and reveal secrets discovered about Magellan
product line that will help in the monitoring and maintaining of the Infonet Passport
network.
HARDWARE:
The Passports are now being maintained by Infonets SMP, (Self-Maintenance Program)
organization. They mostly bring out replacement cards and swap them. No real troubleshooting is
performed. It is left up to both the NMC and the TSE to determine what the actual failed
component is. The following represents official procedures in troubleshooting mostly FP port
problems.
Currently the customer is inconvenience by having a port failure impact their service, then we
inconvenience them again when we move them back to the original port to use their modem and
FR access to test the repaired card or panel. This is unacceptable and the following procedures
are to be used in such cases. When a FP port involves an IP or X.25 trunk, it is preferred that the
service be placed back on to its original port to maintain diversity issues.
The Passport network, at this point in time, now has both 160 and 50 type nodes deployed. Over
the period of deployment, we slowly found an excessive amount of bad FPs DOA. This forced
Infonet to modify its commissioning procedures. Below are the official procedures for
commissioning a new Passport nodes:
ACTIONS:
Verify that the CP inserted into slot 0 is active (wait 5-10 minutes) by:
Ensuring the CP LED is in a solid green state.
Issuing the 'display fs' and 'display fs disk/0' commands from the local operator port.
Verify disk volume label is CP Disk.
Start P
check p
save p
activate p
conf p
commit p
end p
6. Verify the CP inserted into slot 15 is in standby mode (wait 5-10 minutes) by:
Issuing the 'display fs' and 'display fs disk/15' commands from the local operator port.
7. Issue the 'sync fs' command. The standby CP (slot 15) will sync off the CP (slot 0) over the
next hour. You may verify the progress of the synchronization by issuing the 'display fs'
command again.
8. Verify the two CP's are synchronized.

TSE:
To avoid damage from static electricity, when handling circuit cards follow these rules:
Do not handle circuit cards unless you are using appropriate anti-static protection, such as an
anti-static wrist strap. In addition Northern Telecom also recommends use of conductive carpet,
conductive shoes, or heel grounders.
If you are wearing an anti-static wrist strap, it must be attached to a good ground to ensure that
static buildup is discharged harmlessly. When a Magellan Passport cabinet is fully grounded, you
can use the electrostatic discharge (ESD) jack on the shelf assembly. Handle circuit cards by the
faceplate or stiffener. Do not touch electrical connections, pins, or soldered surfaces.

TSE:
1. To avoid damage from static electricity, when handling circuit cards follow these rules:
Do not handle circuit cards unless you are using appropriate anti-static protection, such
as an anti-static wrist strap. In addition Northern Telecom also recommends use of
conductive carpet, conductive shoes, or heel grounders.
If you are wearing an anti-static wrist strap, it must be attached to a good ground to
ensure that static buildup is discharged harmlessly. When a Magellan Passport cabinet is
fully grounded, you can use the electrostatic discharge (ESD) jack on the shelf assembly.
Handle circuit cards by the face plate or stiffener. Do not touch electrical connections,
pins, or soldered surfaces.

NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING:
OVERVIEW
The Passport was deployed with V.35 and X.21 FP cards. Infonet utilized these
cards as trunking between nodes. This was done purely for monetary reasons.
At the time Nortel only provided 1 and 2 port trunk cards. If deployed using
these cards, some nodes would have been nothing but trunks, i.e., LON and
BRU. The expense in deploying this configuration would been too prohibitive.
Unfortunately the V.35 and X.21 cards have limited networking monitoring
unlike IDNX trunk cards. This is an unfortunate realization but not
insurmountable.

Modify the following trk parameters to block revenue data from passing.
ACTIONS:
NMC:
When unable to access a Passport node through the NMC or via a telnet session, the most likely
cause is that we lost the Internet Protocol Interface Virtual Circuit (IPIFR) connection to that
specific node and needs to be reset. Follow the below procedure to reset an IPIFR to a node.
1. Verify that the node is NOT isolated by checking the neighboring nodes trunks into it.
Verify via the Passport Node Manager (on the LAN) the individual DPN access module (MID)
to the node in question. This is under view node on the right column of the IP address. An
example is PP1400 is MID 750.
2. From the Passport CMD Console, try and ping to the node.(example: ping rtg dpn mid/750) If
the ping is operational, this indicates that the node is up and running. It probably indicates
that the IPIFR link between the NMS and the node has been compromised.
3. If no response, the trunks feeding the node are receiving excessive errors, or a trunk feeding
the path to that node is receiving errors.
4. From the NMS, telnet to NTBRU via a UNIX window. If you are NMCBRU you will need to
logon to NTLOS, if you are NMCLAX you will need to logon to NTBRU.
5. From NTBRU, you should be able to ping the node in question. If pingable, then telnet to the
node.
From NTBRU,
telnet PPxxxx <CR>
Login:
befut <CR>
Password: (cannot display pwd due to ISO regulations)
Identify the destination of the LCN (logical channel number) associated with NTLOSs IP
address, by typing in d IPIFR lcn/* <CR> (204.79.141.241 is the IP address for NTLOS)
Reset the LCN associated with IP addr 204.79.141.241 with the lock/unlock command.
(Example: lock IPIFR lcn/xx <CR>)
(Example: unlock IPIFR lcn/xx <CR>)
6. Check the LCN. Its destination should now be a different LCN number.
7. From the NMS CMD Console, verify the node is now accessible. If not, page 2nd level for
further assistance. If now accessible, logout of the node, exit NTBRU, and exit out of
NTLOS.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE:
OVERVIEW
The Passport nodes are designed to be low maintenance, but require quarterly
review. Below is an outline of procedures for the TSE to use when performing
the PM.
In the case of the node located in South Africa, the NCC is to assist the South African
Telecom (SAT) site engineers in the following procedures. It is to be assumed, that
Infonet support personnel are to direct the SAT engineers through the following
procedures and must accept limited access to the node in doing so. Where a TSE is
stated, assume it represents an SAT engineer.

NMS SUPPORT:
OVERVIEW
The Passport has an NMS system to help support and maintain the very
complex Passport network. Its features include network mapping, network
alarm notification, network provisioning and network access. This NMS runs
under a UNIX platform. This section has been developed to note complex
procedures in the event such occurrences happen.
TSE-NMC:
8. Select SECURITY, select LOGIN (ADMIN), select O.K. (no password needed)
9. Ensure all CSIMs and FMDRs, are in a Connected state.
10. Go to TOOLS, select NMS ADVISOR, select ALARM DISPLAY, select ACTIVE ALARMS
(be sure to start Alarms in LOG MODE only)
16. At the bottom of CMD Console, type in . CR, then type in .PP1400 CR. You should now
have connectivity to PP1400 LAX.
17. (NOTE: A total of approximately 70 components should be connected. This may take 10-15
minutes to populate the NMS)
18. BEFORE PROCEEDING, insure the oncall NETRSM person has instructed the NMC on any
oustanding file issues (such as pollers, alarms, etc...). At this time, NETRSM may want to
WAIT, on starting the below files at a later time due to congestion on the NTPP NMS.
19. At the NTLOS prompt, type cd /home2/tools/statistics CR, then type ls col* CR
(the file being sought is collectStats1.0)
20. Then type ./collectStats1.0 trkpoll passive PACRIM 600 & CR, FOR NTLOS ONLY!
21. Then type ./collectStats1.0 trkpoll passive AMERICAS 600 & CR FOR NTLOS ONLY!
22. ./collectStats1.0 trkpoll passive EMEA 600 & CR FOR NTBRU2 ONLY!
23. Then type in exit twice (to close window). If you don't close the UNIX (NTLOS) window,
then your screen will fill with alarms and data .
24. You may then start another UNIX window if needed
OVERVIEW
The purpose of this command macro is to eliminate constant operator queries in determining if
there are problems being experienced on a Passport trunk. Nortel developed this macro because
there was no way for operators to clear the counters. This macro can also be used for various
statistical components as described below.

APPENDIX E
Bit Error Rate Calculation
BER is the ratio between the number of bit errors and the total number of bits transmitted. The
error rate is measured by using either a parity check or a bit-error rate test set (BERT)
The error rate, r, is calculated as follows:
r= BER x bit rate
Legend:
T = Elapsed measurement time.
n = Number of errors counted during T
C = Confidence level (Probability) that the error rate is less than r
The probability of measuring n = 0 is:
P(0) = e
-rT
(Poisson distribution)
The Poissson distribution is used since the occurrance of one error bit does not affect the
occurrance of another.
A BER of 10 implies performance of one error bit in 10 bits. For a 128 kbps circuit, 10 bits
6
3
can be collected in 7.8 seconds (10 /128 x 10 ). However, for a confidence level of 0.99 that
3
the error rate is less than r = 1.28 x 10 /second, the collection measurement should be 36
seconds.
Data Transmission
A BER of 10-7 is typical in terrestrial digital transmission link. However, the acceptable
industry BER for data transmission is 10-6. A BER of 10-5 is not acceptable on digital
systems although it is typical for modem and satellite transmissions.

OVERVIEW:
Objective:
This document is meant to standardize the way Infonet support personal troubleshoots
and maintains the passport node that is currently housed by South African Telecom. This
document will cover how the Passport node and trunks are monitored and maintained
and how the hardware maintenance is performed.
The issue to consider is that all previous procedures apply unless stated
otherwise in this appendix.
Background:
A special arrangement has been established between Infonet and South African
Telecom. The agreement arranges for Infonet to place equipment at an SAT hotel and
share in its maintenance and ongoing support.
Essentially, Infonet GCAC, NCC and GTS will share the burden of monitoring and
supporting the Passport node in South Africa. This also applies to other overlay
equipment, which is housed at the SAT hotel. Only Frame Relay traffic is allowed to be
passed through this node, thusly, IP and X.25 customers have been converted to FR
prior to migration.

ACTIONS:
The support groups should treat the following alarms with utmost importance, as they indicate a
breakdown of the Passport filtering, or Firewall if you will. Below, we have indicated both cause
and affects as well as what actions should be taken in the event of such an alarm ever is
received.
NCC/GTS:
7009 0202
7009 0502
0000 9000
Legend
<component_name> = any Passport component
Details
An internal software error has been detected by a component. This alarm index is
re-used by many subsystems upon detection of various types and severities of
internal errors. Thus, one instance of an alarm with this index may be totally
unrelated to another instance. In some cases, it is possible that the alarm comment
text can give a hint about what has happened.
Because the circumstances which caused this event are unexpected, the impact can
vary on a case-by-case basis from no impact at all to possibly a severe impact. In
the latter case, it may be accompanied by other alarms.
The problem may or may not be reproducible. If the circumstances are known, this
can greatly help the resolution of the problem.
Remedial action
Contact your local Nortel Networks technical support group.
Component Severity Status
<component_name> indeterminate message
This could indicate that PP2702s RID number has been changed to RID0, thus breaking down
the firewall. The appropriate action is to take the network by downing the trunks, it is suggested
that both GTS and 3rd level get involved immediately and assess correctly the situation as this
will cause the node to be isolated.
Text/English to accompany the alarm:
"The Regionid for node PP2702 has been changed. Please contact Ed Kirstein (phone/pager/email) IMMEDIATELY".
NCC Action to the Alarm:
Once the NCC is presented w/ the alarm, they must immediately contact Ed Kirstein
(phone/pager/e-mail) of this occurrence.
NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING:
OVERVIEW
In an effort to provide network topology and routing security between the new 'co-managed'
South African node and Infonet's Passport network, a new Region ID and RID filtering will be
implemented. The implementation of a unique/different topology Region ID within the new South
African Passport node will effectively restrict the exchange of OSPF topology databases (Infonet
Region ID - 75, SA Region ID - 105), and therefore MID's/nodes within that region will only be
seen. RID filters implemented on the interconnecting 'regional boundary' Infonet node (i.e. DOC)
will effectively limit Infonet's routing architecture to the South African node and still allow a
seamless interworking for Infonet's customer base (i.e. PVCs will still be built successfully
between the two different regions/RID's).There are slight differences to support the node in this
manner. Three sections cover the main differences, Topology/tracing, Alarming and provisioning
procedures.

Figure 32...South African Topology and Addressing
The South African node is separated by addressing. By changing the node to a different RID
number, the trunk connecting it can be filtered, thus providing security. AS you can see the DNA
addressing has changed. If a PVC is destined for PP2702, the Passman tool will change the
DNIC addressing to reflect an 8. This will instruct the CSRMs to route the PVCs to the UTP
gateway.
See next section for instructions on how to trace a PVC through the UTP gateway.
