The hike in urad dal prices from

The manufacturers say that the

What makes their life difcult are
the complications surrounding the

Despite escalating prices of urad

This scenario prompted Tamilnadu Appalam Manufacturers Welfare Association to conduct a press
conference recently. Speaking at

to Commerce and Industry Minister
Nirmala Sithamraman to import
the stock. When onions are being
imported on a large scale, why not
follow the same with urad dal to
meet the demand? he asked.
Attributing a part of the reason
for the price hike to online trade,
former president of the association,

has created an articial scarcity by

he biggest casualty of the rise
in pulses price is the ubiquitous
sambar. This staple of Tamils is
taking a beating with the rise in the
price of toor dal which is an active
ingredient of the elixir. A resident of
Saidapet said, Due to the increase in
the prices of toor dal we think twice
before making sambar at home.
Earlier, people would make sambar
at least thrice a week. Now they opt
for it once a week and look for alternatives during the rest of the week to
accompany their rice dish, she said.
It is not just Chennaiites, consuming sambar by the litre, who are
affected by the price rise but also

Educating kids
on road safety

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 15:
To educate students on road safety,
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt
Ltd organsied CRF 50 Fest at Guru Nanak School, Velachery on Wednesday.
The countrywide activity is aimed at
engaging and educating kids in a fun
way on the intricacies of road safety.
Speaking at the event, HMSI vice
president (Sales & Marketing), Y S
Guleria said, Honda aims to reach
out to 6,000 kids all over India with
the CRF 50 fest.
The Honda CRF 50 motorcycles are
specially designed to train children in
the age group of 9-12 years on the
dynamics of roads safety.
Guleria said, Under our Catch them
young approach, we believe in culti-

vating safe-riding habits from an early

age. We want the future riders of India
to be responsible citizens on the road
and lead to a safer road environment.
It is a small step towards creating safety
advocates for the society, thus helping us
achieve our dream of making safe riding
an every day habit, he said.
According to Honda, they have
educated over ve lakh individuals
of all age groups on safety riding
with special focus on empowering
females and kids. The activity replicates real life riding conditions in an
organised and secure environment.
Additionally, theoretical sessions,
trafc signs quiz and road rules puzzles are some of the other activities
which were conducted by Honda
safety instructors.

He also echoed the view of the

Saidapet housewife that people
were trying to avoid making sambar
and looking for alternatives. He
wanted the government to step in
with measures to check the rise in
price of toor dal.
If toor dal price is ruling high, urad
dal that is an important ingredient
to make dosas and idlis, is out of
the reach of the common man. As
the price of 1 kg of urad dal is now
close to Rs 190, it has affected a lot
of customers.
Caught in the pincer, a grocer in
the city said customers who were
earlier buying 1 kg of urad dal, now
buy only half-a-kg. That badly affects our business, he said.

Hajj stampede: Toll rises

Modis words

ommenting on the Dadri killing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said

that his government had nothing to do with it. It was an unfortunate
incident which the anti-BJP elements were exploiting to polarise the polity. In other words, Modi was clearly accusing the so-called secularists of
playing a communal card in order to entice the minority community firmly into its camp on the eve of a crucial Assembly poll in Bihar. The PM
reiterated that the Opposition raised the bogey of communalism whenever the BJP came to power. This was a familiar but crude stratagem to vitiate the atmosphere and to besmirch the image of the BJP. Indeed, Modi
said that the cancellation of the performance by the Pakistani Ghazal
singer Ghulam Ali in Mumbai was also unfortunate but, again, his government had nothing to do with the cancellation. The Dadri incident or
opposition to Pakistani singer is undesirable and unfortunate. But what
is the central governments relation with these incidents? the PM asked.
Notably, this is the second time in under a week that the PM has spoken
about the Dadri killing. A few days ago, at an election rally in Bihar, he
had forcefully endorsed President Pranab Mukherjees appeal for communal harmony and peace, stressing Indias core values of peace and
communal harmony. Religious strife harmed everyone and hindered economic and social progress. He called for a united fight against poverty
which blighted the lives of both Hindus and Muslims. Poverty had no religion. It tormented everyone stricken by it. Modis impassioned plea for
religious harmony and peace had been dismissed by the habitual Modihaters as mere homilies.
It was different that days before he actually commented on Dadri the
same critics had cried themselves hoarse, accusing the PM of maintaining a conspiratorial silence in the matter. It appeared as if for Modis professional critics, including quite a few in the English language media, he
is doomed if he speaks and he is also doomed if he keeps quiet. Happily,
Modi has learnt to get ahead unmindful of the visceral haters. Indeed,
Modi said that his party did not believe in these incidents but it was the
Opposition which was seeking to milk them for purely partisan ends.
These incidents needed to be debated calmly. These incidents were a
reflection of the deep social malaise that existed in the society for various
historical and other reasons.
Predictably, Modis clear-cut assertion that his party or government had
no role in Dadri has prompted the same old secularist suspects to question his claim. Fortunately, having seen through these leaders, ordinary
people no longer take them seriously. On his part, the PM must ensure
that the Maharashtra Government is insulated against sabotage from
within by the Shiv Sena component.

DUBAI:
The toll in the deadliest tragedy to

tally showed that at least 1,621
people were killed and hundreds
still reportedly remain missing.
The Associated Press count is

regional rival Iran, saying Riyadh
considers it both a matter of sovereignty and a privilege.

that afflicts existing wireless technology: incompatibility between the
three competing wireless standards
in today's market.
Each wireless charger so far supports either the Qi, Powermat, or

These three standards operate

years of diplomacy but lawmakers
in the United States and Tehran insisted on voting on it.
The deal, which will lift nuclear-related sanctions on Iran in return for
curbs on its atomic activities -- the
Islamic republic denies seeking a
bomb -- has received a rocky ride in
the US and Iran.
Members of the US Congress failed
in September to torpedo the deal.
And in Tehran ultraconservative
lawmakers repeatedly warned of
holes in the text of the agreement
and criticised President Hassan
Rouhani for suggesting MPs were
deliberately delaying the deal.
In selling the agreement to sceptics,
Rouhanis government said its ne-

gotiators protected the future of Irans nuclear programme while ensuring

sanctions, that have ravaged its economy, would
end. However, as late as
Sunday parliament was
the scene of fiery clashes
over the deal.
Ali Akbar Salehi, head
of Irans Atomic Energy
Agency, went on the attack for the government
after he and other officials
were accused by lawmakers of having capitulated
to the West. So-called red
lines for the talks were laid
down by Irans supreme
leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,
and the Supreme National Security
Council that he oversees.
The motion, titled Irans Plan for
Reciprocal and Proper Action in Implementing JCPOA allows the government to proceed, IRNA reported.
Iranian officials have said sanctions
should be lifted by the end of the
year or January 2016 at the latest.
However Iran also has to satisfy the
International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog,
of the exclusively peaceful nature of
its atomic programme.
The IAEA faces a 15 December reporting deadline to resolve what it
had termed ambiguities over Irans
past nuclear activities.

Baby dinosaur
fossils found in
Dragons Tomb
Miami:
A handful of baby dinosaur fossils
complete with fragments of eggshells have been uncovered in Mongolia, researchers said.
They are the youngest ever discovered of a type of giant hadrosaur
that lived about 70 million years ago,
known as Saurolophus angustirostris, which means lizard crest, said
the study in PLOS ONE.
Their discovery adds to knowledge
about how dinosaurs developed and
grew, from birth to adulthood. The
babies all likely came from the same
nest in a site known as the Dragons
Tomb in the Gobi Desert, according
to lead researcher Leonard Dewaele
from Ghent University and the Royal
Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The saurolophus family is already well known to paleontologists.
The herbivores could measure
up to 12 m (40 ft) long and weigh
more than two tons. They are distinguished by a crest that projects
backward off the top of the skull.
The three or four babies described in
the paper did not yet have this cranial crest, and their skulls were not yet
fused, suggesting they were in the
early stages of development. Scientists are not sure if they had hatched
yet or if they met their demise while
still in their shells.

Obama for long stay of

US troops in Afghan

Barack Obama

NEWS MAKER
of the day
WASHINGTON:
US President Barack Obama is
looking at the possibilities of a longterm large presence of American
troops in Afghanistan beyond 2016,
in the backdrop of the temporarily takeover of Kunduz city by the
Taliban. Under the current policy,
American troops are scheduled to
be reduced to embassy level presence by the end of 2016. Currently
there are about 10,000 US troops
mainly engaged in training, aid and
advise mission in Afghanistan.
No decision in this regard has been
made yet, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.
'The reason that the US got involved in Afghanistan in the first
place was because of the concern
about the threat of terrorists that
have been operating in Afghanistan
and in the region,' he said.

The US, he said, has made important progress against extremists in

Afghanistan. 'However, there continues to be a terror threat emanating from Afghanistan. It's not on the
same scale of what - of the risk, pre9/11, but it's still a risk that we do
not take lightly,' he said.
'It is important for, in the mind of
the President, for the US to preserve our counter-terrorism capabilities inside of Afghanistan - both
because of the impact that would
have on the stability of the central
government in Afghanistan, but also
because of the impact that would
have on the core national security
interests of the US,' Earnest said.
Responding to a question, he acknowledged that there is an upcoming policy decision that the president
has to make about our ongoing military posture inside of Afghanistan.
He said there's no denying that the
risk that is posed by those terrorist elements inside of Afghanistan
is significantly lower than the risk
that was posed by core Al Qaida
pre-9/11. 'However, that is not a
terror risk that we take lightly. The
president takes it quite seriously,
and that's why the work that's been
done by our military personnel in
Afghanistan even since our combat
operations there ended continues
to be a top priority,' he said.

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI):

As WPI ination rate edged up to
(-)4.54 per cent in September, India
Inc on Wednesday said there is scope
for banks to slash interest rates further
and the green shoots of economic
recovery are visible.
Expressing concern on the rise in
prices of food articles, industry bodies
said the government must take steps
to ensure the prices of essential commodities remain in check.
Following the cut in the policy rate
by RBI, several banks have revised
downwards their base rate. However,
there is room for further cuts in the
lending rate by banks. As the gains of
a lower interest rate regime get transferred to both consumers and investors,

demand would pick up and we hope

this brings pricing power back into the
hands of producers, FICCI president
Jyotsna Suri said.
WPI ination rate rose marginally to
(-)4.54 per cent in September, with
pulses, vegetables and onion turning
costlier, even as the overall deationary trend persisted for the 11th month
in a row.
Assocham president Rana Kapoor
said WPI ination and IIP data indicate
that green shoots of economic activity
might nally be becoming more visible.
Moreover, he said, swift policy action
is desired for reviving investments and
business condence.
Continuous negative growth of WPI
ination is facilitating the businesses in

terms of increased price cost margins

vis--vis decreased cost of raw materials. Also there are signs of revival
in demand scenario, PHD Chamber
president Alok B Shriram said.
With ination remaining on a comfort-

able trajectory, easy monetary policy

stance would expand further in terms
of more repo rate cuts as there is a
strong need to boost demand in the
economy, he added.
The wholesale price index-based
inflation was (-)4.95 per cent in
August. It has been in the negative
zone since November. In September last year, inflation was 2.38
per cent.
Ination in food articles inched up
to 0.69 per cent in September, from
(-)1.13 per cent in August.
The Central and State governments need to take proactive steps
to contain any further rise in prices
of essential commodities like pulses
and onions, Kapoor said.

Indian parents play a key role
in shaping the career paths of
their children, as 82 per cent parents are involved in deciding their
childs career, says a LinkedIn
study.
Globally, India is amongst the top
three countries following this trend
with Brazil highest at 92 per cent,
followed by China at 87 per cent, the
study said. Indian parents continue
to be involved in their childs careers
even after their education, 84 per
cent Indian parents stated that they
were aware of what their child does
on a day to day basis at the workplace. This is higher than the global
average (77 per cent), it added.
About 37 per cent of professionals surveyed endorsed this
by describing their parents as
Lighthouse Parents who advise
and encourage, without being over
involved.
Contrary to the popular belief that
Indian parents are over involved,
this study shows that a signicant
number of Indian parents also follow the Lighthouse Parenting style
and that professionals acknowledge this, said Deepa Sapatnekar,
head of Communications, LinkedIn
India and Hong Kong.

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI):

Playing the accessibility card, French Ambassador Francois Richier on
Wednesday called upon Indian investors to invest in France, saying its a
gateway to access the Middle-East and African markets.
From there (France), it is easy access to the Middle-East and
African markets. For Indian companies, these are the territories
which would be more pleasant. Many other companies from
other countries are investing and have invested in France to
the point that 30-34 per cent of the exports are made by foreign companies, Richier said while addressing a gathering of
industrialists on Wednesday.
He was speaking at a business conference on France: Your
Preferred Destination jointly organised by FICCI and the Embassy of France.
He singled out the communication gap as a likely cause for
lack of Indian investment in France as there is a need to highlight and depict the business and investment opportunities in
France to the Indian business community.
He pointed to Indian companies such as Mahindra and Bharat Forge which
are already present there and are doing well.
The Sintex and Sonalika groups also have a presence in the French investment sector.

q Indian skipper happy to end moderate run

M S Dhoni emerged from a lean

patch with a classy innings.

Ganguly bats
for Dhoni
Kolkata, Oct 15 (PTI):
Former captain Sourav Ganguly came in support of underre Mahendra Singh Dhoni
whose unbeaten 92 guided
India to a respectable 247 for
nine against South Africa in the
second ODI at Indore.
For last four years Ive been
saying he should bat up the
order. Its no rocket science.
Tendulkar would not have
scored so many runs had he
not opened, Ganguly said.
Hes given himself time and
batted for 30-35 overs. However good you are if you dont
get the number of overs how
would you score runs.
India Test captain Virat Kohli
may have failed yet again but
Ganguly said its a matter of
time before he nds his form
back.
Terming the Delhi player a
champion Ganguly said: He
will score runs some day. Not
everyday you can score a
century, there will be ups and
downs. Kohli is an absolute
champion. Hes a great player.

Indore, Oct 15 (PTI):

Mahendra Singh Dhoni might
have paved the way for Indias
victory with an unbeaten 92 in
the second cricket ODI,
but the skipper preferred
to credit his bowlers for
the series-levelling win
against South Africa
here Wednesday.
Going through the
toughest phase of his
international career,
Dhoni produced
a captains knock
to guide India to
a respectable 247
for nine and then
showed good leadership acumen with smart
bowling changes to bundle out South Africa for
225 in 43.4 overs.
What was important for
us was to get early breakthroughs and that was provided by the spinners. I felt
the spinners bowled well on
a wicket where there was less
assistance for them. Later on
the fast bowlers took wickets at

Indian captain M S Dhoni praised the bowlers after the series-levelling win.
crucial intervals. Overall, it was a complete team
effort, Dhoni told reporters at the post-match
press conference.
It is such a victory where the bowlers contribution is more than the batsmen. Some bowlers
contributed by scoring runs as well. In a score l
ike 250 if your bowlers contribute 40 odd runs it
means a lot, he said.
A wide range of strokes were on display as

Dhoni answered his critics with an unbeaten

knock that came off 86 balls. Captain Cool
batted with tail-enders with a calm head as India
scored 82 runs off the last 10 overs to put on a
board a decent total, which at one stage looked
impossible having slumped to 165 for seven in
40 overs.
Talking about his match-winning knock, Dhoni
said he was in two minds after being left stranded

with the tail but decided to take the innings as

long as possible.
It was an opportunity to make runs. Though I
scored runs and we won the game but usually
you dont want such an opportunity to come. You
want your top-order to perform. I felt we needed
partnerships at that point of time. Once we lost
(Ajinkya) Rahane and a few other wickets, I was
thinking to play the big shots as I was not sure
how long the lower order will survive with me.
But thats when I said no and looked to play a
few more deliveries, looked to play 50 overs. The
good thing with batting rst is whatever you score
the opposition has to score those runs. Keeping
it simple was important and thats what we did,
Dhoni said after scoring his 60th ODI half century.
The Indian skipper said 247 was gettable at the
placid Holkar Stadium wicket.
We managed to get 247 which I dont think was
a par score in this wicket but denitely something
which we could look to defend. But it was not a
safe score.
There was tremendous pressure on Dhoni both
as a batsmen and captain as critics were gunning
for his head before the start of the game.
Asked Dhoni about the pressure, he said: There
is always pressure when you play for the Indian
cricket team. The expectation levels keep going
up and it does put a lot of pressure on the individuals. I have never played an international match
where we were not under pressure.

Federers Slam record

within reach: Djokovic
Beijing, Oct 15:
Novak Djokovic on Wednesday said taking out Roger
Federers record of 17 Grand
Slam titles was one of his
main motivations as he looks
to prolong his stay at the top of
mens tennis.
The world number one said
Federers magic total wasnt
out of the question after a year
in which the Serb contested
all four Grand Slam nals and
won three of them, taking his
total to 10.
Nothing is impossible. I have
that kind of mindset. I know that
its still a long way to break his
record, Djokovic, 28, said at
the Shanghai Masters, after
cruising past Martin Klizan
6-2, 6-1.
But people even mentioning
and talking about it, obviously
it atters me. Im honoured to
have such compliments.

But, you know, its one of the

things that motivates me to
keep going, of course. I love
this sport. I feel like there are
many more years in front of me.
Pete Samprass record of 14
majors stood for seven years
before Federer surpassed it

in 2009, and the 34-year-old

came close to extending it
beyond 17 when he contested
this years Wimbledon and US
Open nals.
Hopefully if Im able to sustain
this level of dedication and level
of performance, the way I play

tennis, I think I have a good

chance to compete for the trophy on any Grand Slam in the
future, Djokovic said.
But, again, Im at the peak of
my abilities now. Just depends
how far and how long I can go.
I cant predict anything. But
Ive achieved a lot so far in my
career. I feel like there is a lot
more to come.
Rafael Nadal needed all his
trademark grit and determination on Wednesday when he
was taken to a third-set tiebreak by towering ace king Ivo
Karlovic in a dramatic opening
match at the Shanghai Masters.
After Djokovic and Andy Murray safely went through, Nadal
was in danger of following
Roger Federer to the exit when
the 6ft 11ins (2.11m) Croatian
zipped 24 aces past the 14-time
Grand Slam winner.
But Karlovic, who has red

more aces than any other

player in tennis history, fatally double-faulted at 4-4 in
the tense nal-set tie-breaker,
giving Nadal a shot at victory
which he did not miss.
Nadals excited reaction to the
breathless 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6
(7/4) win, when he leapt in the
air and pumped his sts, and
then stood with his arms aloft,
left no doubt about how much
the victory meant.
The Spaniard had earlier
walloped three return winners
in a row, from Karlovics giant
serve, at 4-5 down in the rst
set to break the Croatian and
ultimately take a one-set lead.
Defending champion Federer
tamely succumbed to 70thranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas
on Tuesday but Nadals win
means the other big names
march on at Shanghais Qi
Zhong Stadium.

that he came back from the
national squad and had a good
game. He just came back and
was very tired. He didnt even
sleep. I asked him how we
was feeling and he said
he was ready and he
wanted to play. He is
an example.
Robin, who featured in Indias 3-0
defeat in the 2018
FIFA World Cup qualiers on Tuesday night, accompanied Carlos to face the
media and shed light on playing
two games in such a quick time.
Before I got on the plane home,
I rang back home and spoke to
the coaches and ofcials and
they asked me if I was ready. So
I said, if you want me ready, I will
be ready, he said.

As soon as I got done with

the Indian team game, I was
mentally ready. I thought to
myself, I will go there and win.
I dont like losing. I decided
to learn from the Indian team
game and not make the same
mistakes and move onto the
next game. I kept my focus
and I want to thank coach
for letting me play today. At
the end of the day I can say
I want to play but he wanted
me to play.
Carlos was also impressed
by footballs fans in Pune.
People here love their football.
It was the same in Goa, Chennai, Delhi and everywhere.
Their team lost but the supporters saw a good game.
Every stadium I have been
to, the cheering has been
awesome. But the Delhi supporters are the best. Against
Chennai we had 25,000 people. But we want to have
60,000 people.

As things stand, Barca are
unable to register Arda, who
they signed from Atletico

However, a serious knee

CBI seeks urgent

hearing on
Virbhadra
New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI):
The CBI today moved the Supreme
Court seeking urgent hearing on its
plea challenging Himachal Pradesh
High Courts order granting protection
against possible arrest and other relief to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh
and his wife in a disproportionate
assets case.
A bench headed by Chief Justice
H L Dattu agreed to hear CBIs two
petitions on reopening of the court
after the Dussehra break.
The bench, also including Justice
Arun Mishra, however refused to list
the matter for hearing tomorrow, saying that it is not so urgent.
Additional Solicitor General P S Patwalia, appearing for the probe agency,
said the high court order has virtually
stalled the investigation process by
granting relief such as protection
from arrest and no interrogation of
accused without its prior permission.
He said that the high court not only
restrained CBI from arresting the
Chief Minister but also embargoed it
from ling charge sheet without its prior leave. The probe agency has led
a transfer petition and a special leave
petition in the apex court seeking
transferring the case against Singh
from Himachal Pradesh to Delhi and
setting aside of the order passed by
the state high court, respectively.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 15:
With just three days to go for Nadigar Sangam polls, actor Vishal
who is spearheading the campaign
for Pandavar Ani against incumbent
president Sarath Kumar, says, People want a change, they are with us.
It has picked up in a big way and it is
very encouraging.
The elections to Nadigar Sangam
will take place on 18 October at St
Ebbas School in Mylapore under
the supervision of a retired Judge
appointed by the Madras High Court.
Says Vishal, There is nothing personal between me and Sarath Kumar.
To be really honest, if I had to do this
over a personal issue, I would not
have got so much support.

artistes and drama actors. We want

to usher welfare in their lives. I met
people and stage actors. They have
been in theatre for 40 years. Now
they are living in old-age homes.
They dont have any kind of recognition. It has been a sorry sight.
Q: How did it all began?
A: Obviously with the building. We
just wanted to know what was happening, what was the status. We
asked a a question hoping we will

get an answer. But there was no

reply. It brought us together. We
wanted to have our own building.
Then others joined in.
Q: On the defamation case led
against you by Sarath Kumar?
A: I am surprised at the contents
of the defamation suit he had led.
I have nothing against Sarath Kumar as a person. It is against the
President of the Nadigar Sangam
who happens to be him.
Q: What is your reaction to allegations that you are splitting
the industry?
A: The Producers Council had
elections. Directors also had elections. Were they splitting the industry? Elections are there for every
organisation. It is not splitting in
any way. It is a democratic process.

There is no wrong we contesting

elections.We will stand united even
after elections.
Q: What do you say on allegations that drama artistes would
be sidelined, if Pandavar Ani is
voted to power?
A: We will strive for their good
living. We have heard only grievances. They were happy that we
are standing for elections, after all
they have not had fair elections
in the past ten years. They are
happy that youngsters have come
forward for change, but their grievances are in large numbers. They
have been sidelined. They have
been left in the lurch. They have
not received any pension. We assurd them that there will be only
smile in the faces.

Sagayam report

can of worms?
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 15:
IAS officer U Sagayam, the Madras High Court appointed Commissioner to probe the alleged
mining irregularities, is set to
submit his voluminous report soon.
Last week, he wound up his operations in Madurai and reached
Chennai.
It was expected that he would
submit the report to the High Court
today. Many shiocking revelations
are expected and the report has
already generated a buzz in political, mining and media circles, besides social activists and people
of Madurai.
It was Sagayam who blew the
lid over the alleged scam, which
runs into thousands of crores of
rupees, when he was the district
collector of Madurai. Hence, the
Court appointed him as the legal
commissioner to probe the irregularities.
The nine month period of investigation by Sagayam saw many
twists and turns like a gripping

a particular spot, following allegation that sacrificies were made by
a mining company.

LAASYA SHEKHAR
Chennai, Oct 15:
Besides frequent advertisements
on television, there is a lot of noise
made about the importance of
handwashing--- especially around
15 October every year which is
observed as Global Handwashing Day.
This has accelerated in many
educational institutions with soap
companies using the venues to
create awareness among the
students about the importance of
handwashing - and also promote
their products.
However, the impact created is
just a drop in an ocean, as many
people in the lower strata of society still lack awareness about
handwashing.
On Global Handwashing Day

various settlements like Egmore

depth of awareness.
Amid the busy national highway

A recent survey conducted by the
social work department students of

cent of the children of the area do
not wash their hands regularly.
The only time most children wash

A thriller loaded

My lm, 144 is not based on any real

by them, says Manikandan.

Mirchi Siva in 144

I am sure most of us would have

come across instances when Section 144 was enforced for a few
hours or at the most, a few days.
But then, there are rural areas
where cops stay permanently to
ensure that there is no disagreement between two factions.
The director describes his recent
visit to a village in Usilampatti
district where cops have been living with the villagers, for over 60
years. This is to ensure there are
no problems between members of
two communities who have been
at loggerheads. Then, there is also
this place near Thirumangalam,
where people of two villages ght
over fishing and therefore, Section 144 is enforced. But even with
Section 144, people leave their
villages and visit nearby towns for
some entertainment. Such incidents
got me thinking about a script and
inspired me to write the story, says
Manikandan.
Mirchi Shiva plays a local jewel thief
in the lm, while Ashok Selvan essays
the role of an illegal car racer. There are
eight important characters in my lm. A
particular incident connects all of them
and thats what this movie is all about,
he says.
Music is by Sean Roldon and
