What is Athens?
Athens is a username and password system
that enables Ravensbourne staff and
students to set up a personal account to
access most of the LRC electronic resources.
These personal accounts can be used on
and off the college campus to access certain
electronic resources. To view a current list of
the Electronic Databases that are available
through the LRC go to the intranet pages:

How do I set up an Athens account?
To create an Athens account you will need to
use a computer on the Ravensbourne
College network. Accounts are created from
the central Athens site.
• Go to:
http://intranet.rave.ac.uk/lrc/accessAth
ens.htm & click on Athens url -
http://www.athens.ac.uk
• Select the ‘Self registration’ option
on the left side of the screen. You will
be asked for a username and
password.
• For students enter the username:
ravstudents & password
student2007
• For staff enter the username ravstaff
& password staff2007
• You will then be required to fill out a
form to create your personal account
Only fill in Part 1 Mandatory
information
Username: Your username should be your
student or staff number this will ensure that
your username is unique.
Your Username
In order to identify you as a Ravensbourne
LRC user, the username will be prefixed with
ravst if you are a member of staff, and ravsu
if you are a student. Your final username will,
therefore, be ‘ravstnumber’ or
‘ravsunumber’.
Password: Your password must be between
6 and 20 characters long and contain both
numbers and letters. It is also case sensitive.
Other Details
Forename(s): Enter your first names
Surname: Enter your surname
Email address: Enter your email address
you will receive an email from Athens
confirming your username and password.
Once you have received this email, you can
use your personal account either within the
college network or at home.
You can login directly into ‘My Athens’ – (via
http://athens.ac.uk) to view a list of all
resources that you can use through the
Athens system. Once you have logged into
one resource you can access them all.
Therefore, it is important to ‘log out’ by going
to ‘My Athens’ to log out of the databases.
Downloading Athens Toolbar to
your Browser
You can now download the ‘My Athens’
toolbar to your Mozilla browser this
means this will always show in your
browser and so make it easy to get into
Athens. To download the toolbar go to:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/337/
click on ‘Install Now’.
Using Athens Resources for the
First Time

You will be asked to accept the above terms
and conditions before you can use Athens
resources. The terms explain the importance
of keeping your username and password to
yourself and not sharing with anyone else.
These resources set up through Athens are
paid for by the college and so once you leave
Ravensbourne you will not be able to access
them.
