The Fight For Freedom in Burma

Pakistan acquires MI-35 Hind E Helicopters

Pakistan recently signed a defence deal for with Russia the purchase of Mi-35M (HindE) helicopters-a versatile helicopter gunship with troop carrying capabilities. The Mi35M- is offered as an export variant of the Mi-24 with comprehensive upgrade
incorporating a whole range of capabilities.
The MI-35 the export version, incorporates several improvements over the earlier Mi24 models .The cockpit and vital components are protected by titanium armour, thats

why the Hind series is referred to as the flying tank with a better aerodynamic profile.
A new X-shaped tail rotor replaces the earlier three-blade rotor; stub wings shortened
but still retain the ability to carry large amounts of rockets and guided missiles.

Avionics have also received a major update; the cockpit is now night vision capable
with new and improved Multi Functional Displays (MFD), the sensor package upgraded
to enable combat operations at any time of the day, in all weather conditions, the

turbo shaft engines now more powerful, making it perfectly suitable for high altitude
operations.
The Mi-35 is primarily designed as a combat helicopter with secondary capability of
military transport missions delivering superior flight performance characteristics and
manoeuvrability function. It can carry a wide range of weaponry like anti-tank guided

missiles, unguided rocket pods, short range air to air missiles, gun pods and free fall
bombs.

Destruction of enemy armoured vehicles being its primary duties, it is armed with
Ataka or the older Shturm anti-tank guided missiles with a range of up to 8 kilometres
to carry 80 80mm rockets or 20 122mm rockets.
The Hind-E helicopter has a twin-barrelled 23mm gun. The Mi-35 has been widely
hailed as an excellent addition to form the backbone of a more modern attack
helicopter fleet of Pakistan. Its troop carrying ability can be used to insert Special

Service Group (SSG) personnel onto dominating heights in current areas of operation,

to provide vital surveillance on surrounding areas or provide covering fire to other

elements manoeuvring in the valleys below.

It is a worrisome development as India harbours reservations on the acquisition

altering the balance of power in the region even though Indian acquisition of AH-64
Apache gunships from the US might provide semblance of balance.
