Frhbyzantinische Siedlungen
in Serbien und Umgebung
In der vorliegenden Studie werden die berreste von frhbyzantinischen
Siedlungen auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Serbien und seiner Umgebung (vor
allem der nheren) behandelt. Der chronologische Schwerpunkt liegt im 6. und
Anfangs des 7. Jahrhunderts, obwohl die Ereignisse im 5. und Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts auch in Betracht gezogen werden, die sich auf dem Gebiet der ehemaligen Provinzen Pannonia Secunda, Dalmatia, Moesia Prima, Dacia Ripensis,
Dacia Mediterranea, Dardania, Praevalis und in deren Nachbarschaft abspielten.
Die Studie bietet eine bersicht mit Beispielen an, ohne Katalog.
Im einfhrenden Teil wird die Forschungsgeschichte der serbischen frhbyzantinischen Archologie errtet, mit Forschungsprioritten, Methoden, mit
Rckblick auf die vorhandenen Deutungen und auf den Forschungsstand. Es
folgt eine historische, geographische und klimatologische Einleitung.
Der den Ansiedlungen im engeren Sinne gewidmete Teil beginnt mit einer
Auseinandersetzung ber die Kategorisierungsmglichkeiten der verschiedenen
Siedlungsformen, was einerseits durch den Forschungsstand erschwert ist (wenige flchendeckende Grabungen) und andererseits durch die Desintegrations
und Ruralisationsprozesse in den Stdten. Diese Prozesse machen die Grenzen zwischen Stadt, Dorf und Befestigung (im militrischen Sinne) fliessend.
Dabei sind fast alle Siedlungen befestigt und in Hhenlagen. Die Verschiebung
des Siedlungsnetzes auf von Natur aus leichter verteidigbare Positionen war
durch die verschiedenen Barbareneinflle in das Ostrmische Reich verursacht.
Die Grundrisse waren konsequent dem Gelnde angepasst und unregelmssig.
Bei den Turm und Torformen kommen Lsungen aus der alten griechischen
Wehrarchitektur zum Ausdruck, sogar solche aus der Vorgeschichte, wie die
tangentialen Tore. Es wird argumentiert, dass diese Anlagen keine Refugien waren, wie man zuerst dachte, sondern stndig bewohnte Siedlungen mit
ruralem Charakter Drfer, die wie anderswo auch im Illyricum die Siedlungsgrundeinheit waren. Die Anwesenheit von Militringenieuren beim Bau der
Anlagen wird erkannt, u.a. durch raffinierte, sich wiederholende Befestigungselemente, die in der Studie einzeln behandelt und mit illustrierten Beispielen
vorgefhrt werden (Position, Graben, Mauer, Tor, Turm usw.). Die befestigten
Drfer, deren stndig steigende Zahl auf dem Balkan in die Tausende geht (was

eine entsprechende Verteilung von Garnisonen unvorstellbar macht), gelten

als ein Spezifikum. Sie sollten nicht mit im klassischen Sinne verstandenen
Militranlagen verwechselt werden. Sogar die Kastelle am Donaulimes waren
dem Fundrepertoire nach ruralisert und von einer nach Geschlecht gemischten
Bevlkerung bewohnt, die verschiedenen zivilen Ttigkeiten nachging.
Es wird die Frage nach dem Schicksal der alten rmischen Stdte gestellt,
besonders nach den verheerenden Hunneneinfllen in den 40-er Jahren des
5. Jahrhunderts, in denen viele zerstrt wurden. Attila verlangte sogar eine
Verschiebung der Grenze von der Donau bis Naissus. Es ist nicht ganz klar
was sich danach im heutigen Zentralserbien abspielete. Es kam um die Mitte
des 5. Jahrhunderts zu einem Unterbruch im Mnzumlauf und zur Zsur in
der Siedlungskontinuitt. Erst Ende des 5. Anfang des 6. Jahrhunderts kann
von ersten Erholungsmassnahmen des Imperiums gesprochen werden, die sich
unter Justinijan I (527565) massiv ausbreiteten. Es wurden alte Siedlungen
erneuert, neue gebaut und befestigt, was Prokop beschrieben hat und was z.Tl.
auch archologisch dokumentiert wurde. Doch das alte stdtische Leben in den
einst berhmten Orten wie Sirmium, Singidunum, Viminatium oder Naissus
gab es nicht mehr. Anstelle dessen wurden armselige Huser oder Htten unter
oder ber den Resten der vorherigen Wohnviertel erstellt, selten solide gebaute
Objekte (wie das Horreum in Singidunum). Man wohnte in der Substruktion
des ehemaligen Hippodroms in Sirmium, was im Vergleich zu den gepidischen
Htten in derselben Stadt vorteilhaft war. Gleichfalls werden ber den ehemaligen Siedlungsarealen Grber oder Nekropolen gelegt, zu gutem Teil germanischen Ursprungs. Somit scheinen die ehemaligen Stdte dank ihren Befestigungsberresten immer noch eine gewisse Anziehungskraft gehabt zu haben,
auch fr Barbaren, aber sie werden mindestens zum Teil undicht besiedelten
verwahrlosten Trmmerhaufen geglichen haben. Die Grabungsergebnisse sind
zerstreut und nicht systematisch publiziert, was besonders fr Naissus zutrifft.
Im 6. Jahrhundert werden an Orten wo es keine Vorgngersiedlungen gab
neue Stdte gegrdet, wie die Gradina auf der Jelica oder Cariin Grad, wobei der Begriff Stadt bedingt aufgefasst werden sollte. Diese Beispiele sind
dargestellt und kommentiert, wie auch einige andere Orte, Bregovina oder
Zlata (aus der Umgebung von Cariin Grad, welche als die Heimat Justinians I
betrachtet wird Zlata mit Staudammberresten aus dem 6. Jahrhundert). Das
Probelm der Identifikation von Iustiniana Prima wird erwhnt. Es werden Unterschiede zwischen Cariin Grad und Jelica verglichen, in der Architektur und
Dekoration. Dazu wird festgestellt dass der zentralrtliche befestigte Komplex
auf der Jelica zum Unterschied von Cariin Grad, aber auch all den anderen
Stdten keine nachtrgliche Desintegrations und Ruralisationsphase hatte,
was eine Ausnahme in der Region ist, die einer Erklrung bedarf. Sie kann
auf der Zusammensetzung der zugezogenen Bevlkerung begrndet werden,
in welcher germanische Elemente indiziert sind (einiges Kleidungszubehr in
Grbern, knstliche Schdelverformung, sporadische Keramikfragmente in der
Siedlungschicht). Das in der ersten Phase geschmckte Cariin Grad/Iustiniana

mit leichtem Material und Schlamm, whrend auf der Jelica (846m) Erweiterungen vorgenommen wurden. Es folgt ein Exkurs ber das frhbyzantinische
Gamzigrad (Romuliana) in Nordostserbien, ein Kapitel zu den Drfern und ein
Abschluss mit Blick auf die Wirtschaftsformen. Diese waren durch die Verschiebung der Wohngebiete in die Berglandschaft (bis zu 1800m . M.) oder
zumindest auf Anhhen vorbestimmt. Die Viehzucht herrschte vor, wie auch
die Bearbeitung von Holz. Landwirtschaft wurde ebenso betrieben, und der
Bergbau, worauf oft auftretende Schlackefunde weisen. ber bergmnnische
Ttigkeiten im Illyricum des 6. Jahrhunderts ist ansonsten in den schriftlichen
Quellen nichts erwhnt. Werksttten, Schmelzfen, Rohstoffe, Halbfabrikate,
Gussformen etc. zeugen von Produktion und Handwerk, verschiedene Amphorenfunde vom Einbinden der befestigten Drfer und der Stdte in den berregionalen Handel. Es wird eine statistische bersicht der Werkzeugfunde aus
den Kastellen des Donaulimes und von der Jelica angeboten.
