Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), topping up

Tighten sparks plugs using a torque wrench.

Carefully insert coils into plug wells and seat firmly on plug
connectors. Rubber seal on coil must completely surround collar of
plug well. Gentle twisting may be necessary to seat it.

With connector catch open, push electrical connector back into coil.
Carefully close connector catch. It should easily snap into place.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), topping up
BMW Advanced Diesel technology reduces nitrogen oxides in the
diesel emissions by injecting diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) into the
exhaust system. DEF is consumed when the engine is running and
requires refilling. There must always be an adequate level of DEF in
the tank. If DEF runs too low, the vehicle will not restart.
Diesel exhaust fluid can be purchased at your BMW Service

A reserve display in the instrument cluster will illuminate to indicate

that the DEF is running low. The reserve display is first illuminated
with a remaining range of approx. 999 miles/1,600 km.

DEF should be added as soon as the reserve display appears.
If the minimum level is reached while driving, the engine will not
Once the reserve display illuminates, add at least 2 bottles
(approx. 1 gallon) of DEF.
The DEF may need to be replenished if exposed to temperatures
below 23F (- 5 C). This will be indicated by an illuminated reserve
display. If this happens, add DEF just before beginning to drive the
vehicle. At temperatures below 12F (- 11C), the fill level may not
be immediately displayed owing to the cold temperature. The level
will be displayed after the DEF has sufficiently warmed up.

Open fuel filler flap. Turn DEF fill cap counterclockwise and remove.

Differential oil level, checking

Avoid contact with Diesel exhaust fluid. Do not allow contact
with skin or eye. Irritations may result.

When working with DEF in closed areas, ensure good

ventilation. DEF fumes are acrid smelling.
Keeping DEF out of reach of children.
Avoid DEF contact with vehicle surfaces. Wash off immediately.

Press down on bottle (arrow) to fill tank. If necessary add additional

bottle until system is full. Tank is full when level in bottle no longer
changes. It is not possible to overfill tank.

Pull back bottle and unscrew it.

Replace DEF tank cap and turn fully clockwise. Close fuel filler flap.
Return empty DEF bottles to your BMW Service Center for disposal.

Differential oil level, checking

The front (if applicable) and rear differentials are filled with lifetime oil
that ordinarily does not need to be changed. BMW recommends
using only a specially formulated synthetic gear oil (SAF-XO) that is
available through an authorized BMW dealer parts department.

Front differential:
Remove engine splash shield. See Engine lower covers (splash
shields), removing in this repair group.
Remove front reinforcement plate. See 310 Front Suspension.
Do not drive vehicle with front reinforcement plate removed.
Use 14mm Allen key with extension to reach fill plug as shown (B).
The front differential requires 600ml of fluid. If the level is at the
lower edge of the fill opening (B), it is overfilled. To be certain of
level, oil should be drained while warm through drain plug (A), the
drain plug replaced, and 600ml of oil added through the fill plug.

Use new stretch-type bolts when installing front suspension

reinforcement plate. See 310 Front Suspension.

Rear differential: Check oil level at filler plug (arrow).

Place DEF bottle on fill neck and thread in as far as it will go.
