DEFENDS CALL TO
BLOCK MUSLIMS:

Will Trumps comments hurt

the GOP and his own brand?
NICQUEL TERRY @NTERRYAPP

First, Donald Trump called for a ban on illegal Mexican immigrants, saying the country was sending rapists and criminals to the
United States.
Then the Republican front-runner vowed to send home all illegal
immigrants if he is elected president. Less than two months later, he
came under fire for claiming thousands of Muslims in Jersey City celebrated the Sept. 11 attacks a claim widely derided as false.
But Trumps statement on Monday was perhaps the last straw for
many political observers and Trump foes, if not GOP primary voters.
The billionaire businessman called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives
can figure out what is going on with terrorism.
The White House quickly condemned the proposal while Trumps
opponents in the Republican primary took aim.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called Trump unhinged; Ohio Gov.

TOMS RIVER - A police officer investigating document fraud was dragged some 25 yards by a car driven
by a man who tried to flee the scene, authorities said.
The suspect was arrested less than two hours later,
but police said they cannot release his name because
they are not sure of his real identity.
The incident that resulted in the hit-and-run crash
started around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, when Toms River
Officer Daniel Brennan was at the Motor Vehicle Commission office on Hooper Avenue investigating document fraud, according to Ralph Stocco, spokesman for
the Police Department.
Brennan was speaking to the man suspected of document fraud at the MVC office when the suspect suddenly ran to a black Honda Civic and put the car in reverse
with the door open, Stocco said in a news release. Police
said Brennan, who tried to pull the man out of the car,
became trapped between the open door and the drivers
seat and was dragged at least 25 yards before falling
loose.

Christie: Critics of N.J. economy

EAST WINDSOR One day after Donald Trump leveled a threepronged attack on Gov. Chris Christie, the governor said fellow Republicans who have criticized his New Jersey economic record live in a
fantasy world.
Christie delivered a withering speech Tuesday at a New Jersey Business and Industry Association forum, lambasting not just Democrats
he sees as obstructionists but also business groups for abandoning Republican elected officials by not providing them enough campaign
cash and by cooperating with Democrats. Both factors are reasons
critics of his stewardship of New Jerseys economy miss the point,
Christie said.
I love some of the people in my party who are critical, critical of the
fact that we havent done more. I love that because those folks are the
folks that live in a fantasy world, Christie said. And if they are not
convinced today that they live in a fantasy world, let me tell you, theyll

Long Branch
settles claims
kids were gagged
DAN RADEL @DANIELRADELAPP

LONG BRANCH - Three parents who filed a federal

lawsuit alleging their children were bound, gagged and
photographed by custodians in a Gregory Elementary
School bathroom three years ago have agreed to settle
their claims for about $360,000.
According to U.S. District Court papers, the parents
agreed to accept annuities of approximately $108,000,
$108,000 and $143,000, respectively, for the children,
who were identified by pseudonyms.
They were 7 years old and in second grade at the
time the alleged incident took place. The payments will
become available in 2029, when the children reach the
age of 25. The claims initially sought $30 million.
The defendants Long Branch Public Schools, the
Long Branch Board of Education and former custodians Kevin Garifine and Robert S. Rego admitted no
liability. No charges were ever brought against Garifine or Rego, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office, which investigated the claims.
