counseling

ounseling for children going through

traumatic experiences can be very
crucial for their future development. when
a child goes through a traumatic experience
can effect theamygdala, hippocampus, and
prefrontal cortexs of the brain. This can
cause severe mood changes,depression
and in some cases PTSD(post traumatic
stress disorder). These can make the child
more aggressive and violent then normal.
If action is not taken these affects may
be permanent. How do we avoid this? Its
simple. early childhood counseling can
create a stop to all of this. There are so
many benefits that Oxford outreaches
counseling offer. These include better
grades in school, less violence overall and
a better relationship with your child. in
order for these results there are two main
factors a counselor must establish with
the child. These are; understanding your
childs developmental level and building
and establishing trust with the child.
Understanding your childs developmental
level can involve many different parts. First
you mist find out the cognitive functioning
of the child. next one must see where
their academic achievement stands. Then,
the counselor must find their pediatric
records and home environment. The last
step is to identify the gender of the child
and what traumatic history they have gone
through. After this is finished the counselor
has a small understanding of the childs
developmental level. Establishing trust with
the child is the most important factor. Trust
is key to getting into a childs mind. If the
counselor can gain trust from the child a
comfort level is formed therefore, the child

will invite the counselor into their world and
let them know what they are thinking. gaining
a childs trust can be very difficult. There are
many steps to this process. These include;
creating a quiet and comfortable meeting
environment, developing an interactive
style with the child, the counselor must use
language that the child understands, keeping
your messages simple and on point, the
counselor must practice his/her listening
skills, the counselor must be honest and
relabel, ask opened ended questions and
never judge a book by its cover. These steps
create a safe environment for the child to
talk about whatever they could like with the
counselor. Now that we have explained the
issues of traumatic experiences on a childs
brain, benefits counseling has at an early age
and the process of our counselors we
encourage everyone to being their child to
Oxford Outreaches to help better not just
your child but your relationship with them as

A study showed that the strongest benefit

from mentoring, and most consistent across
risk groups, was a reduction in depressive

almost one in four youth reported worrisome
