100 shows a year across the globe, is relaxed and

The singer and American treasurewho has helped
propel such singer-songwriters to mainstream audiences
as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Randy

Collins has not only had an extraordinary career
spanning six decades and more than 50 albumsbut a

Her latest album, Strangers Again, was released this past

Heres the thing, though. Im perfectly

willing to accept all the Internet had to say
about the birds, because, hey, whos going to
complain? The bluejays, probably.
Im not quite sure Im ready to accept the
Internets information about Asian digestive
tracts, though. Sadly, I dont have any Asian
friends I know well enough to ask about
their digestive systems.
And, Im not sure I would if I could.
But, it was interesting to think about.
Something else much more serious Im
thinking about are all these seemingly random acts of multiple murders.
Its restarted the whole gun control debate.
Personally, I dont own a gun and never
did. I grew up in the city, so hunting was
never even considered as a pastime. Twice,
growing up, I was face to face with the gun
culture but those are stories for another time.
It just seems to me thatgiven the prevalence of gun violence and its random
natureits only fair that citizens be allowed
to carry some form of protection.
It is, after all, one of our constitutionally
protected rights.
I know and have heard all the talk about
how much less gun violence there is in countries such as England (where even the police
dont carry guns) and closer to home, Canada.
You cant blame food for the fact that
obesity is about to become our nations No. 1
health problem. You cant blame cars
because people keep having accidents.
So, it just seems to follow naturally that
you cant blame guns for the increase in
multiple murders.
The national association of police chiefs
is on record as supporting an easing of the
gun controls so people can protect themselves. Think about that: The top professionals whose job it is to protect and serve admit
that they cant do the job.
Other security professionals are now
telling people caught in these random murder
situations to fight backgrab anything,
throw anything, just attack, attack, attack.
Sadly, the only thing most people carry
these days are credit cards, a little cash and
cell phones.
You cant really throw a credit card; the
government has been throwing cash at problems for years and you know how thats working out. And most people are not going to
throw their phones away no matter what. I

e have a cleared lot next to

our home and an unintended
(when it rains a lot) duck
pond in the middle of the
farm road that connects that property with
ours. The cat and I spend a part of almost
every day watching the cloud of starlings
that visit that property and ours.
Its a fascinating sight to watch hundreds
of these tiny birds take off and maneuver their
way across the sky as if they were all attached.
Over the last few weeks Ive traveled to
Delaware on a number of occasions and
each time I have been amazed to see that
same cloud of birds multiplied a hundredfold along Route 40 on that stretch just
before you get to Woodstown.
Thousands upon thousands of starlings
rising up as one and twisting and turning in
a choreographed dance across the sky.
The second time I actually pulled off the
road to watch because the cloud was so
large it almost blocked the sun.
The next day I googled cloud of birds
and discovered that:
The birds are, in fact, starlings, something Id suspected but didnt know for sure.
Its a phenomenon that is more prevalent in Europe where clouds of starlings can
contain hundreds of thousands of birds.
Starlings are not native to America, but
were brought here by the English for some
unknown reason (probably because they
missed watching the clouds of birds).
There is an actual word (murmuration)
for the bird-cloud phenemenon.
The birds (birdbrains or not) do it for
safety when they sense a predator (hawk,
falcon, fox, etc.) nearby because of the safety in numbers factor.
Boy, you gotta love the Internet for information like that.
But, I was just getting started.
I had also been wondering for some time
about why there is no famous Chinese or
Japanese cheese. Think about it: Most
European countries have a particular cheese
(or cheeses) that is easily associated with it.
The Greeks have feta. The Brits and Irish
have cheddar. The French have Brie.
Germany has Limburger. Holland has
Gouda. Even here in America, we have (not
too imaginatively named) American.
So I googled Asian cheese.
The reason there are no Pacific Rim
cheeses, according to the Internet sources I
found, is that 90 percent of the indigenous
population is lactose intolerant. Who knew?

donations throughout the year, the
fundraiser helps obtain enough money to
present the scholarship again this year.
The Sharon Parsons Bortle Scholarship
was established after the death of Bortle, a
fourth grade teacher at Durand who tragically lost her life in an act of domestic violence. Among other things, this student is
required to be pursuing a career in education or journalism, two of Bortles's greatest
interests. The winner is selected from a list
of applicants provided by the Vineland High
School guidance department. The scholarship fund also lends support to other organizations that promote awareness of domestic violence and helps victims of abuse.

On the Passing of Christine

Schneider
The Vineland Public Library lost
one our most ardent supporters
with the recent passing of Christine
Schneider. She served as president
of the Librarys Board of Trustees
until the day of her passing when
the Board transitioned into its new
slate of leadership recently. Fellow
trustees shared words of appreciation for Christine, having given so
much of herself to the Library. It
wouldnt be until later that evening
that we would learn of her passing.
In fact, it was only the month
before that she had presided at her
last meeting in October despite
experiencing obvious difficulties
from her recent turn in health.
Christine was one of those rare
individuals to whom service came
naturally. She had retired from a
long and remarkable career as an
educator. Never content to rest
upon her laurels, Christine continued to give freely of her time and
substantial experience for the benefit of the many individuals who rely
upon the Library daily.
Those of us continuing our service as the Board of Trustees of the
Vineland Public Library will sorely
miss her experience and wisdom as
we try to move forward in her
absence. Thank you, Christine, for
your 11 years of service and caring.
You will be missed.
On behalf of the entire Board of
Trustees,
With gratitude and sincerity,
Victor Druziako

Clayville Project Achieves

Final Milestone
Vinelands Clayville project, currently
the largest capital improvement project in
its history, has now been declared by the
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland
Independent System Operator (PJM-ISO)
suitable for commercial operation.
Vineland Municipal Electric Utility's
(VMEU's) Clayville project is a 60megawatt (MW) simple cycle gas fired generation facility. The addition of this new
unit now makes Vineland self-sufficient,
meaning VMEU owns enough generating
capacity to serve all customer loads even on
the hottest of summer days. The new unit
will also help minimize costs for supporting the PJM transmission grid and protect
VMEU customers from high electricity
costs during peak demand.
The unit completed its first fire several
weeks ago and is now at the end of its commissioning phase and ready for commercial
operation. This phase of the project was a
turning point which ensured all components of the new unit were in place and
operating as intended.

VMEU has been generating power to

serve its customers since 1899. As a longstanding commitment to self-reliance,
VMEU began planning for additional electric generation prior to the completion of
its first unit (Down 11) in June of 2012.
VMEUs core value is to keep the Electric
Utility city owned, thereby maintaining the
utility jobs and economic stimulus provided by the utility to the community.

The Greater Bridgeton Legends planning committee has announced that the
2016 Bridgeton Legends event will be held
Saturday, March 12, starting at 6 p.m at
the Centerton Country Club. Greater
Bridgeton Legends is an annual dinner and
entertainment benefit that celebrates
notable Bridgeton residents and their significant contributions to our community.
This combined service club-sponsored
project began as part of an annual Karaoke
event in 2010 and came to be staged as a
separate benefit honoring Bridgeton
heroes. Each year the volunteer Greater
Bridgeton Legends committee elects one or
more honorees as Bridgeton Legends. The
committee also selects local Bridgeton
charities to benefit from that years event
proceeds.
Over the past five years Greater
Bridgeton Legends, through sponsorships,

Every year Eye Associates employees select a

Charity Project to assist and help others in need or
with no family around the Holiday Season. This year
they selected the Code Blue project. They decided
to assist Eric, who works for CSI, their courier and
cleaning company. This project is near and dear to
his heart. Eric is a loyal, dedicated volunteer with
Code Blue. Eric works very hard and puts in many
volunteer hours to help the homeless keep warm
and out of freezing cold weather in the winter
months. He has actually driven around and picked
up people in need. He told me that there is a great
need for warm clothing: jeans, coats, gloves, hats,
scarves, boots, hoodies. new or old...any size !
All you need to do is ask of our employees and they deliver, states Dr. Tyson.
Our whole team at Eye Associates and SurgiCenter of Vineland got together
especially after hearing first-hand from Eric of Code Blues dire need so they can
help others.
Code Blue is an alert declared whenever temperatures drop below the freezing
point and weather conditions pose a danger to the homeless population. The
Code Blue Alert allows authorities to take homeless people to local shelters known
as Warming Centers. NJ has a network of agencies throughout most counties.
These shelters provide a warm place to sleep, warm food & clothing. Eric volunteers at the Vineland agency Warming Center.
We hope to make another persons holiday a little bit happier with warm clothing and some personal attention knowing that others do care about them! states
Gina Biagi, Administrator.
If you wish to contribute warm clothing or food products, call your local Code
Blue center or call Gina Biagi at 856-691-8188, ext. 226 for more information.

Eric, volunteer with CODE BLUE and employee of CSI Cleaning Services, thanks Dr. Tyson,
left, for his support in this project.

Song and a Movie

White Christmas, the movie, could never hope to
match that of its title song, which had made its
mark during the 1940s.

his Saturday at 11 a.m.,

Millvilles Levoy Theatre will
screen one of the most beloved
holiday films, the 1954 classic
White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby,
Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney. The
movies popularity, however, could never
hope to match that of its title song, which
had made its mark during the 1940s.
Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas
in 1940 in a hotel in either California or
Arizona. The confusion arose over the
claim by each establishment, the La
Quinta Hotel and the Arizona Biltmore,
that it was the location where Irving
wrote his classic composition. However,
Berlins opening verse, which is usually
not included on most recordings, suggests
that California was where the song was
born: The sun is shining, the grass is
green/ The orange and palm trees sway/
Theres never such a day/ in Beverly Hills,
L.A./ But its December twenty-fourth/
And I am longing to be up North.
According to sources, the song received
its first public performance when Crosby
sang it on his NBC radio show, The Kraft
Music Hall on December 25, 1941. It
wasnt until May 29, 1942 that Crosby
entered the studio with the John Scott
Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby
Singers to record a version of the tune for
Decca Records. It was released as part of a
six-disc set of 78 rpm records that comprised the musical soundtrack of the film
Holiday Inn, a showcase for Berlins songs,
which starred Crosby and Fred Astaire.
Surprisingly, the tune was not yet a
favorite of the American public, which
preferred another song from Holiday Inn,
Be Careful, Its My Heart over the
Christmas offering. Even Crosby remained
indifferent about White Christmas, only
informing Berlin that there werent any
problems with that one. But by the end of
October 1942, the song reached the top of
Your Hit Parade and remained at that
position into the next year, when it won
an Oscar for Best Original Song. From that
point on, the tunes popularity became
part of American culture.
One of the reasons White Christmas
became such a favorite is its nostalgic
stance. The singer dreams of a holiday just
like the ones I used to know, a Christmas

that harkens back

to youth and all that
it represents before
adulthood reshapes
innocence into reality and responsibility. For U.S. soldiers
fighting in Europe
and on the Pacific
during World War
II, the song invoked a sense of home and
family and instilled a promise of return.
White Christmas again enjoyed a
place at the top of the charts in 1945 and
1946, at the expense of the recording master, which became damaged from overuse.
The solution was to bring Crosby, the
John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken
Darby Singers back into the studio on
March 18, 1947 to re-record the song. Its
this version of Crosbys performance we
hear at this time of year.
With the continued popularity of the
song, Paramount was eager to reunite
Crosby and Astaire in 1949 for a film entitled White Christmas, which would utilize
old and new Berlin material in a storyline
partially based on a new musical the composer had been putting together. Film
sources report that upon reading the script,
Astaire passed on the project and was
replaced by Donald OConnor, fresh from a
brilliant performance in Singin in the Rain.
After a long series of delays, filming
began in autumn 1953 with Kaye in the
OConnor role and White Christmas was
released the following year, earning what
sources claim was the highest box office
figure for a cinema release that year. Over
the decades, White Christmas has joined
the top rank of holiday movies, but it never
reached the peaks achieved by its title song.
Sources report that the tune enjoyed the
prestigious achievement of remaining the
best-selling record for more than 50 years.
Crosbys single of the tune has reportedly
sold 50 million copies, an achievement that
Guinness World Records declared made it
the best-selling single of all time. According
to sources, there are 500 versions recorded,
ranging from jazz renditions to rocknroll
arrangements, that continue to capture the
publics attention. What an accomplishment for a song that only makes an appearance one month out of the year. I

Johnsons Auto Supports K9s

for Warriors
K9s for Warriors was founded in 2011
by Shari Duval after she and her family
experienced, first-hand, the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It has
met with great success in helping to reduce
the suicide epidemic that exists among the
veteran population. Some 95 percent of the
dogs in this program come from rescue
shelters or are owner-surrendered.
The vets then go through a three-week,
in-house program with their new service
dog. During the warriors stay at the training facility in Florida, K9s for Warriors
provides meals, equipment, and veterinary
care. All of this is provided at no cost to
the warrior.
As part of its Annual Cause Donation
Opportunity, Johnsons Truck and Auto
Repair in Landisville will match your
donation. They will accept cash donations, or you may donate online at
k9sforwarriors.org or mail to them at 114
Camp K9 Rd., Ponte Vedra, FL 32081. You
have until March 2016 to contribute and
have Johnsons match your donation. I

Animal Welfare Association (AWA)

announces their annual Holiday Fund
Drive, which focuses on giving the gift of
hope to local animals. AWA receives no
government or national funds, and is sup-

ported entirely by donations.

Donating during the holiday season
helps AWA plan for spay/neuter surgeries,
educational programming, and helping
animals get adopted into loving homes. To
date in 2015, AWA has performed over
9,000 spay/neuter surgeries and adopted
over 2,150 pets into happy homes. As a
progressive organization, AWA intends to
increase those numbers in 2016 and can
do so with generous donations.
Animal Welfare Association, a private,
non-profit, 501(c) 3 animal welfare organization, serves the people and animals of
southern New Jersey. AWA is dedicated to
eliminating animal suffering, promoting
the importance of the human-animal
bond, and improving the role of animals in
the well-being of people. Through a variety of programs including adoptions, veterinary services, pet therapy, and humane
education, in 2014 over 23,000 pets were
served through AWA programming.

following the release of Strangers Again,
the Seattle native spoke about her early
bouts with polio, depression and alcoholism before her career as a folk singer
took off in 1963, a couple years after releasing her debut album Maid of Constant
Sorrow.
Around that time she would take her
classical piano training and angelic voice
to Denver, Colorado and Hartford,
Connecticut and soon after Greenwich
Village, New York City, where she became
a popular force on the emerging folk music
scene.
On her early albums Collins, now
known for her eclectic and even experimental taste in musicand her love affair
with lyricsmostly sang traditional folk
songs, tunes penned by Pete Seeger and
Woody Guthrie and songs (some of them
unreleased at the time) by fellow
Greenwich Villagers and folkies such as
Dylan, Eric Andersen, Tom Paxton, Theo
Bikel, Richard Farina and Canadas Ian
Tyson (Ian & Sylvia).
Aside from earning Stephen Sondheim
a Grammy (as a songwriter) for her
astounding 1970s recording of his
Broadway ballad Send in the Clowns,
being the inspiration for Crosby, Stills
Nash & Youngs Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,
her tireless social activism and her strong
musical relationships around the world,
one of Collins greatest achievements is
suggesting an established Canadian novelist and poet named Leonard Cohen to
begin writing songs.
She encouraged the now legendary
Cohen to start writing songs, and hes now
regarded as one of the greatest songwriters
of our time. She also recorded many of
Cohens songs on her albums (Suzanne,
Dress Rehearsal Rag, Bird on a Wire)

including her most recent one.

Eventually he got a record contract
[with Columbia] due to the success of my
[early] recordings of his songs, she says.
And [now] I finally got to sing
Hallelujah, she says of recording the
Cohen song with Bhiman on Strangers
Again. Hallelujah!
We owe each other a great deal,
Leonard and I, and were both very grateful and weve remained friends.
It was Cohen, says Collins, who initially
got her started writing her own material.
He asked me why I wasnt, she recalls.
Its the Socratic message; you ask questions. And I had never thought of it; I had
never done it. So, I answered his question
by writing my first song, which was Since
You Asked [which appears on the
Wildflowers album] and Ive continued to
write songs and Ive written a number of
songs for a brand new project, which is
coming out in April [2016].

Im getting better at
what I do; I know that...
Im on an upward trend.
Judy Collins

Collins says the project hasnt been officially announced yet, but tells The
Grapevine that it will be released on her
label and will pair her with another singersongwriter, both singing songs theyve
written together for the album.
The albumsongs of which she will
perform at the Levoy on Friday, December
18, in Millville, along with material from
her three holiday-related albums and
songs from throughout her careerfeatures Collins dueting with a smorgasbord
of male singers, including Willie Nelson,
Michael McDonald, Jackson Browne, Marc
Cohn, Glen Hansard, Jimmy Buffett and
Jeff Bridges.
I just thought of all the people Id like
to sing with and called them up and they
all said yes, Collins says. The only one
who really said no was Randy
[Newman]. And thats because, Collins
says, the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter
didnt feel his voice would stand up next to
hers.
I also askedI didnt get around to
singing itbut I also reached out to Tom
Waits because Ive discovered a new song
of his, which Ill have to do further down
the road.
Collins asked the singers on Strangers
to either choose a tune to sing with her or
sing a song of her own choosing. She
wound up singing a Newman song (Feels
Like Home) with Jackson Browne, Send

in the Clowns with Don McLean, James

Taylors Belfast to Boston with Cohn and
Tysons Someday Soon with Jimmy
Buffett, who Collins says was very specific
about wanting to sing that song with her.
Of all the stellar tracks on the album,
the performance of a song called Miracle
River with McDonald is her favorite, she
says.
Collins says she plays everywhere
venues of all sizes, indoors, outdoors,
revered musical halls around the world,
and especially intimate theaters such as
Millvilles Levoy.
I think theyre very important, she
says. First, because a lot of them are historic and, secondly, I think they really add
a great value to the community, and when
everybody gets together to restore them I
think its quite amazing.
Expect a few surprises from Collins at
the Levoy.
Throughout her entire career she has
not only been shining a light on littleknown songwriters, but under-appreciated
songs as well.
On her 1993 album, Judy Collins Sings
Bob Dylan Just Like a Woman, for exampleHe loved it, she says proudlyshe
not only interpreted the master songwriters hits, but also lesser-known gems
such as Sweetheart Like You, I Believe
in You and the 1985 treasure Dark Eyes.
Ive started doing that [song] again and
I might sing it [in Millville]. I think that
would be nice to do. Great song.
What does Collins think the reason is
her latest album is her first album in 33
years to chart on Billboard?
Oh, I dont know, she says. People
just wake up and they remember and they
get it and who knows?
Could it be that in the trying and scary
times were living in, people are turning to
a voice that has been delivering beauty,
grace, agelessness, hope and healing for so
long?
Well, Ive always done that, she
allows. So I dont know why today is different. Yes, I think its a good album, but I
think Ive made many good albums. I
mean, yes, its high quality; yes, its unusual; yes, its wonderful. But maybe its
adding all these well-known and seasoned
peers of mine, most of whom have been
around about as long as I have doing what
they do. Maybe theres a synchronicity
about that, but I certainly like it and it was
certainly exciting to do it.
Along with updating her Facebook
pageshe loves flowers and cats, apparentlyCollins reads the reviews of her albums
on Amazon and considers those more
meaningful than whats written in the
press.
They really mean the most to me, she
says. Theyre extremely complimentary,
interesting, thoughtful letters. They really
say [it all]. I

Recently, at Delsea Regional

High School, two-time Dancing
with the Staff champion, Sue
Coppola, made it a "three-peat"
by winning the third annual competition with senior partner
Tommy Conroy. Sue and Tommy,
pictured, wowed the audience
with their waltz-turned-swing
routine, which included flips and
lifts. The second place team,
Abbie Jones-Bilinski and Natalia Berardelli brought school spirit to the stage
with a routine that included hip hop, cheer leading, and the art of stepping.
Rounding out the top three was the team of Christine Dougherty and her daughter Lily who performed a Wizard of Oz-themed routine that included costume
changes from the scarecrow to the tin man to the cowardly lion by Christine.
The contestants raised $226 for the charity The Trevor Project in the days
before the event; a donation to the organization was made on behalf of the GayStraight Alliance.
Special thanks to the Delsea Education Association for sponsoring the event
and to Salon Leezae of for donating their hair/styling services to the contestants
