: Paris talks to Friar Lawrence about the planned wedding. He says that Capulet wants the wedding to
cheer Juliet up. When Juliet comes in, Paris tries to get her to say she loves him, but she refuses his advances.
After Paris leaves, Juliet says that if Friar Lawrence cannot help her, she will kill herself. Friar Lawrence says
that if she has the strength to do this, maybe she has the strength for a daring plan. She says she would rather
leap from a tower, walk with thieves, lurk where serpents are, or be chained with roaring bears than marry
Paris. Rather than marry him, she would be willing to be buried in dead men͛s rattling bones or in a newly-
made grave. She would rather be wrapped in a tomb with a dead man than marry Paris. Friar Lawrence has a
plan. Juliet should go home and agree to marry Paris. Alone in her room on Wednesday night, she should drink
a potion the friar gives her. This potion will make her appear to be dead for 42 hours. When the family finds
her, they will take her to the Capulet tomb, thinking she is dead. Meanwhile, the friar will send word to
Romeo, who will come to Verona, rescue Juliet, and take her to Mantua, where they will live.

: As Capulet directs preparations for the wedding, his servingman says he will hire 20 cooks, but only
those who lick their fingers will stay. Juliet comes home and apologizes to her father. He is so excited that he
moves the wedding from Thursday to Wednesday morning!

: Because of the change in plans, Juliet must now drink the potion a day early. However, she has
several fears. She is afraid that the potion may not work at all. She fears that the friar may have mixed a
poison to get rid of her and cover up his involvement in the unapproved wedding. She is afraid she may wake
before Romeo comes to get her. In this case, she fears that she could be suffocate by foul air in the tomb or be
trapped with her ancestor͛s bones and Tyblat͛s freshly-dead body. She might even go crazy and dash(bash) out
her brains with an ancestor͛s bone! In the end, she overcomes her fears and drinks to thee, you, (Romeo).

: It is Wednesday in the morning, and wedding preparations are going on. Some of the foods include
spice with dates and quinces, and pastry pies. More dry wood is needed for the fires. It is time to wake Juliet,
because Paris has come.
: Nurse tries to wake Juliet, but finds her appearing to be dead. Lady Capulet is the next to come in,
and she is so upset that she says, ͞Revive, look up, or I will die with thee!͟ When Lord Capulet sees Juliet, he
says that she is now married to Death, and that he himself will ͞die and leave him all.͟ Paris feels beguiled,
cheated out of his bride, by death. Friar Lawrence tries to comfort them all by saying that Juliet is now in
Heaven, so she has been ͞promoted͟ even higher than she would have been promoted by marrying Paris, who
is the 52͛s kinsman. He tells the family to take Juliet͛s ͞body͟ to the church. Capulet talks about how all of the
wedding preparations must now be used for a ͞black funeral.͟ Peter argues with the musicians about whether
or not they will play or be paid, now that there will be no wedding.
