Iso-alcoholic Elixir
Materials:
*glycerin, sucrose, (sorbitol) sweetening
agents
*alcohol excellent solvent for drugs but
has an unpleasant taste (need flavorant)
Substitution for glycerin and alcohol
propylene glycol
Elixirs hydroalcoholic (alcohol + H2O)
oral solutions that are clear, sweetened and
usually flavored to improve their taste.

Contain less sugar than syrups


Less effective in masking
unpleasant taste of active
ingredients
Can be prepared by:
simple solution with agitation
solutes are dissolved in
solvent
admixture of two or more
liquid ingredients

Advantage: can contain both watersoluble and alcohol-soluble


components (because of
hydroalcholic character)
Glycerine and propylene glycol adjunctive
solvents added to elixirs
*alcohol content of more than 10-12%
renders them self-preserving
* aqueous portion is added to the alcoholic
portion
Non-medicated elixirs used as vehicles,
flavorants
Medicated elixirs used for the indication
of the active ingredient incorporated

Compound Orange Spirit
Spirits also known as essences

alcoholic/hydroalcoholic
solutions of aromatic or volatile
material
high alcoholic conc. (usually over
60%) is due to greater solubility of
the volatile ingredient in alcohol
rather than in water
active ingredient contained in spirit
may be solid, liquid, or gas
used as flavoring agent or for its
medicinal value
can be applies externally, inhaled, or
taken internally
diluting the spirit with water before
oral intake reduces its pungent taste
can be prepared by: simple solution
(solutes are dissolved in solvent),
solution by maceration ( leaves are
soaked in alcohol to extract desired
volatile substance) and distillation
(takes advantage of the process of
fermentation: sugar in the raw
material is consumed by the added
yeast resulting to the formation of
alcohol)
USP specification: each 100 ml of
compound orange spirit contains nlt
25 ml and nmt 30 ml of the mixed
oils
