The college of education offers Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English with the following objectives:
General Objective
Future teachers should be provided with the required knowledge background for communication arts teaching in the secondary level.
Specific Objectives:
1. Gain an overview of the following study of the English Language and its significance in language teaching;
2. Develop qualities of an effective teacher using the principles of effective delivery in the teaching learning process;
3. Conceptualize the structure and functions of the English Language in the course learning;
4. Enhance the ability to identify the knowledge and skills that students need in the learning process particularly in communication
arts;
5. Develop competence in the use of English Language for effective teaching applying psycholinguistic principle and theories; and
6. Enhance the range and quality of teaching profession through effective communication.

VI/ VII Course Description and Objectives


English 201 is a basic college English course that aims to equip the students with oral communication skills to will help them express
themselves thoroughly and think critically. This fundamental speech course generally intends to help college students communicate more
proficiently in their different fields of study. The course will help the students become effective speakers, inside and outside the classroom,
through readings, discussions, exercises and exposure to methods and techniques of good public speaking. The course also encourages the
student to explore technology and new media to document, develop and share their work/ideas.
At the end of the course, the ENGL 201 student should be able to (1) apply the processes and concepts involved in good communication
to practical communication instances, (2) recognize and make distinctions between the different types of speeches, (3) demonstrate critical
thinking and logical reasoning through writing and speaking, (4) use a variety of techniques and styles in writing effective and creative
speeches (5) deliver oral presentation with competence; (5) utilize various web/digital tools to share their work to a larger audience.

Major Examination
There are two (2) written and/or oral major examinations for the course. Customarily, the exam will be closed notes. If you are going to
miss a major exam, it is your responsibility to alert your instructor prior to exam schedule. Failure to do so will result in an exam grade of zero.
Quizzes
Approximately, three to five quizzes (be it announced or unannounced) will be given for each term. A make-up quiz is allowed if and only
if one could secure an excuse letter duly signed by the guidance counselor, parents or physician. Make-up quizzes shall be done not later than
two days after you return from class.
Recitation/Classroom Participation
Every class discussion requires students participation so as activities. It will be based on class/group collaboration and on the
announced means of evaluation. The rate will come from individual, group and instructors assessment.

instructors prerogative.

Attendance is checked regularly. Late comers will not be admitted after 15 minutes.

Requirements for the subject should be submitted on time. Late submission of projects is not acceptable.
Students who are cheating or plagiarizing materials in the course will not receive credit for the assignments, projects or tests which will
likely to lead failure in the course.
Food and beverages are not permitted in the class.
A student who exhibits dishonest, disruptive or disrespectful behavior risk suspension or expulsion from the institution.
