ASME FOLDER USE (NAVIGATION TIPS)

Folder #1 (2004/5) Contains Latest ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes in effect
1. ASME Section I Rules for Power Boiler Construction (July 1, 2005 addenda)
2. ASME Section II Materials
o Part A Ferrous Material Specifications
o Part B Non-Ferrous Material Specifications (Nickel-Alloy, etc)
o Part C Welding Rod, Electrode, Filler Metal Specifications
o Part D Material Properties (In Entirety ... All Stress Tables, etc)
3. ASME Section V Non-Destructive Examination
4. ASME Section VIII, Division 1 Rules for Pressure Vessel Construction

o Division 2 Alternative Rules (Used in SA ... SAES-D-100)
o Division 3 Alternative Rules for Construction of High Pressure Vessels
5. ASME Section IX Qualification STD Welding & Brazing Procedures/Operators
Folder #2 (2005) Contains ASME B31 Series Piping Codes in effect (May 2006 updated)
1. ASME B31.1* Power Piping (Associated with Boilers/Utilities)
2. ASME B31.2 Fuel Gas Piping (1968 Edition)
3. ASME B31.3* Process Piping (Plant Process Piping Code)
4. ASME B31.4* Pipeline Transportation Systems for Hydrocarbons & Other Liquids
5. ASME B31.5 Refrigeration Piping & Heat Transfer Components (HVAC work)
6. ASME B31.8* Gas Transmission & Distribution Piping Systems
7. ASME B31.9 Building Services Piping
8. ASME B31.11 Slurry Transportation Systems
9. ASME B31 G Manual for Determining the Remaining Strength of Corroded Pipelines
*NOTE: SAES-L-100 IS A MUST READ FOR ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR PIPING. SAUDI ARAMCO HAS
SPECIFIC RULES RELATED TO USAGE OF PIPING CODES/BREAKS.
Folder #3 (2006 Update) Contains ASME B16 Material Series (May 2006 updated)
Note: These are the common Specs (SAES-L-105 required) we see in materials used on our projects. Know them,
learn to spot them on receipt inspection & while utilizing SPEC CHECK!!!
Note: See Read Me page for a complete listing of B16 Series Specs
Folder #4 (2006 Update) Contains ASME B1 Series for Threads (May 2006 updated)
Note: These are the common Specs for THREADS. Of importance is ASME B1.20.1 as referenced in SAES-L-110
(Limitation of Piping Joints). Inspectors must learn the critical (6/7/8) Thread Engagement SAES-L-110 rule.
Inspection Checklists cover thread engagement. Using SAES-L-110 Tables & mandatory ASME B1.20.1 Tables,
THREADED JOINT ENGAGEMENT IS CHECKED BY A SIMPLE RULE AS FOLLOWS: THREADED
CONNECTIONS WITH MORE THAN 2 FULL* VISIBLE THDS. ARE UNACCEPTABLE PER SAES-L-110 &
ASME B1.20.1. CONTRACTOR CAN PERFORM RT TO VERIFY ENGAGEMENT ... AFTER A WHILE
DOING THIS, THE CONTRACTOR WILL GET TIRED OF FINDING OUT THE EXPENSIVE WAY THAT
YOU HAVE BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG & HE WILL ADOPT THIS SIMPLE RULE OF THUMB! *NOTE:
Use ASME B1.20.1 Figures & Tables to learn that a FULL thread does not include the vanishing threads that
lack a full thread root depth (See Figure 3 & Table 2). Use simple math to determine thread engagement & always
be alert of new work where threaded joints are being installed. Always make your QC comply with the TWO
FULL* VISIBLE THREADS MAXIMUM rule! (ENSURE PROACTIVE E-LOGBOOK ENTRY IN TIME!!!)
Folder #5 (2002 Update) Contains ASME B18 Series for Bolting & Miscellaneous (Not updated, info only)
Folder #6 (2006 Update) Contains ASME B73 Series for Pumps (B73.1 & B73.2) as referenced in SA STDS
PDF Document #7 Contains the Piping Tables (Diameters & Schedules) for Wrought (Seamless) CS piping.
PDF Document #8 Contains the Piping Tables (Diameter & Schedules) for Stainless Steel Piping.
PDF Document # 9 Contains the Guideline referenced in SAEP-351 for FLANGE ASSEMBLY
Other miscellaneous PDF docs are as titled.
