Put safe travel at the top of holiday lists

The nation's highways and skyways experience an influx of travelers during the holiday season.
People are on the move over the last
five weeks of the calendar year, traveling near and far to spend the holidays with friends and family members they hold dear. In fact, the

says
the
Thanksgiving and Christmas/New
Year's holiday periods are among the
busiest long-distance travel periods
of the year.
Roughly 90 percent of holiday
travel takes place by personal vehicle, followed by air, bus and train,
says the USDOT. With so many people on the move, the risk for accidents and other incidents increases.
To keep the holidays enjoyable and
safe, travelers should remember to
exercise caution.
Schedule a tune-up. Make sure
your car is in good working order.
Check the air pressure in tires and get
an oil change if it is time. Other cars
on the road may kick up salt and other
debris from the roadways, so be certain
to top off windshield washer fluid to
maintain adequate visibility.
Leave plenty of time. Expect traf-

Avoid these holiday scams

Santa isnt the only one keeping
track of who is naughty and who is
nice! Better Business Bureau is warning
consumers to beware of these common
holiday scams:
Look-alike websites: When shopping online, make sure to use only
legitimate websites. Watch out for URLs
that use the names of well-known
brands along with extra words.
Fake shipping notifications: These
can have attachments or links to sites
that will download malware on your
computer to steal your identity and
your passwords. Dont be fooled by a
holiday phishing scam.
E-cards: Electronic cards can be
great fun, but be careful. Two red flags
to watch out for are: the senders name
is not apparent; you are required to
share additional information to get the
card.

Letters from Santa: Several trusted

companies offer charming and personalized letters from Santa, but scammers
mimic them to get personal information
from unsuspecting parents. Check with
bbb.org to find out which ones are
legitimate.
Grandparents scam: Seniors should
be cautious if they get a call from a
grandchild claiming to be in an accident, arrested or hospitalized while
traveling in another country. Never
send money unless you confirm with
another family member that its true.
Phony charities: Everyone is in a
generous mood at the holidays, so
scammers take advantage of that with
fake charity solicitations in email, on
social media sites, and even by text.

donating.
Temporary holiday jobs: Retailers

and delivery services need extra help at

the holidays, but beware of solicitations
that require you to share personal
information online or pay for a job lead.
Apply in person or go to retailers main
websites to find out who is hiring.
Unusual forms of payment: Be
wary of anyone who asks you to pay for
holiday purchases using prepaid debit
cards, gift cards, wire transfers, third
parties, etc. These payments cannot be
traced and cannot be undone. Use a
credit card on a secure website; look for
https in the address (the extra s is for
secure) and the lock symbol.
Free gift cards: Pop-up ads or email
offering free gift cards are often just a
ploy to get your personal information
that can later be used for identity theft.
Social media gift exchange: It
sounds like a great deal; buy one gift

Opportunities: Mock Interviewer: GPS
Education Butler, WI
Part of GPS Educations mission is to
prepare high school students to be employable upon graduation. Each student goes
through apprenticeship experiences with
manufacturing companies. Part of the

preparation provided is an opportunity for

each student to go through mock interviews. GPS is looking for volunteers who are
professionals that will be able to serve as
mock interviewers.
Meal Drivers: Aging & Disability
Resource Center Waukesha County
Help deliver meals to seniors over the
lunch hour. Receiving this meal allows
home bound older adults to live longer in
home. It also helps seniors receive proper
nutrition and maintain their independence.
Help is needed from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
week-days in the following locations:
Brookfield, Butler, Hartland, Menomonee
Falls, Mukwonago, Muskego, New Berlin,
Oconomowoc, Sussex and Waukesha.
Individuals, couples, friends and neighbors
can do this together. Training and mileage
reimbursement is provided. Requirements:
Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years
old (children with families must be over the
age of 6), have reliable transportation, possess a valid driver's license and provide
proof of auto insurance. There will be a
background check on all who apply.
Drop-In Center Program Assistant:

Pathfinders Milwaukee, WI
Pathfinders Drop-In Center provides
basic needs assistance and intensive case
management to homeless and vulnerable
youth and young adults ages 14-25. The
Center provides access to food, bus tickets,
hygiene, clothing, laundry and shower facilities, as well as programs focusing on
employment, education, independent living
skills and social support services. Program
Assistants (PA) at the Drop-In Center build
relationships that provide assistance and
encouragement to the youth and young
adults to support them in reaching their
goals.
Drop-In Volunteers are required to commit 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6
months. They must possess a high school
diploma or equivalent, be 21 years old and
have experience or interest in working with
homeless or near-homeless teens and young
adults. Reference and background checks
are required.

wildlife monitoring
programs
Would-be volunteers for the Milwaukee
County Parks Citizen-Science WildlifeMonitoring Program are invited to attend
a free general information session
Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at Wehr
Nature Center. The Nature Center is located in Whitnall Park at 9701 W. College Ave.
A variety of Natural Areas wildlife
monitoring projects are being developed
for 2016. Birders who would like to go bikingor bicyclist who would like to learn
more about birdingmay enjoy participating as Biking Birders, completing bird surveys along the Oak Leaf Trail. Volunteers
are also needed for monitoring turtle nesting sites, nest boxes (for wood ducks,
American kestrels, and Eastern bluebirds),
and wetlands, and for documenting
species recorded in the video footage of
the wildlife cameras.
Program attendees may sign up for
project training sessions. Volunteer commitments range from one month to a full
year, depending on the project.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is seeking a Part-time DISTRIBUTION
ASSISTANT. This position is responsible for assisting with route delivery,
training new carriers, and warehouse organization. Working the early hours
from 1:00am 6:00am, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being the most frequent scheduled days, therefore required availability although days may vary.
Staying past 6:00am until the work is completed is required when unexpected
routes are in need of delivery. You must be 18 years of age or older and able
to lift 30-35lbs repetitively. A valid drivers license and have proof of vehicle
insurance are required. Pay rate varies depending on location.
