Course Title: Introduction to structural geology along SW margin of BIC

Course Code: ENV12

Course Description:
The course provides theoretical knowledge as well as practical competency in weather
forecasting with regards to aviation, marine and specialized meteorology.
This comprehensive 10 month programme is aimed at individuals who have a keen
interest in the atmospheric sciences and wish to enter into a career as a weather
forecaster.

Who should attend?

Atmospheric scientists who wish to become weather forecasters and who meet the
necessary entry requirements as indicated below.

How attendees will benefit?

After completion of the programme, delegates will be able to:
produce a nowcast;
produce a short term forecast;
use aerological diagrams (Tephigram and skew T) to determine cloud
bases, tops, stability and instability;
use Satellite and lightning data in forecasting;
use radar data in forecasting;
analyse synoptic charts;

decode meteorological messages used in forecasting such as synops and

metars;
communicate weather information effectively;
research around the topic of short term forecasting;
apply and understand the origin, development and movement of mid
latitude systems to weather forecasting;
apply and understand the origin, development and movement of tropical
systems to weather forecasting;

manipulate NWP data to highlight areas of interest;

evaluate the performance of NWP models (strengths weaknesses);

interrogate NWP data (all parameters);
demonstrate knowledge and application of NWP models;
evaluate real time weather data for patterns, inconsistencies and
inaccuracies;
describe history of current weather systems;

interpret aerological diagrams (Tephis and skew ts);

apply knowledge of probability to weather forecasting (chaos theory);

apply Meteorological knowledge to forecast a severe weather event;
evaluate the accuracy of a forecast (verification); and
communicate weather information for general and scientific purposes.
