4

A perverse heart shall depart from me;

I will know no evil.
5
Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.
6
My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land,
that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
7
He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.
8
Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to cut off from the city of the LORD all those who do iniquity.

Second Cup
Wrestling with God Read Psalm 18:25-26
 Fill in the words your translation uses in the second line of verse Psalm 18:26:
With the_________________ You show Yourself _____________________.
 The first word is the same used in Psalm 101:4 for a “perverse” heart. The second word means “to wrestle.”
God tangles with the twisted. Now read Genesis 32:24-33:3.
 Have you ever wrestled with God? Do you ever want to leave the ring before you get the blessing (verse 26)? What temporary relief
would you get if God walked away before He was done shaping you?
 After this day, Jacob walked with a limp (verse 31-32). Jacob was limping as he fearfully approached his brother (33:3). Have you ever
limped into a situation after wrestling with God? Did your humility provide new opportunities for reconciliation?

Slanderous
 As a church leader, what did Paul have to prove (1 Corinthians 4:1)?
 Who was responsible for judging Paul and other servants of Christ (1 Corinthians 4:4)?
 How did the local church body treat Paul and the other apostles (1 Corinthians 4:10-13)?
 Why are we so quick to criticize those in leadership, whether in church, government or the home?
 How does our culture promote this? Have we made a sport of this?
 What is the proper attitude toward authority (Romans 13:1)?
 When we rebel against authority, who are we really rebelling against (Romans 13:2)?
 What is the consequence for opposing authority (Romans 13:2)?
 What should our attitude be toward our authorities (1 Timothy 2:1-4)?
 Bonus question: What is the proper response when someone slanders you (1 Corinthians 4:13)?

 What happens to our relationships when we gossip (Proverbs 16:28 and 17:9)?
Zip  Have you ever lost a friend because of something they said? Recall that event. Are your memories vivid?
It!  Have you ever lost a friend because of something you said? How do you think they remember you?
 If we speak in love, what will we do when someone commits an offense against us (Proverbs 17:9)?
 What does a deep love do in our relationships (1 Peter 4:8)?
 Do you think people need to literally hear your words in order to be affected by them?
 How do your thoughts and your private conversations influence your attitude and actions?

“But…” Read Matthew 5

 What will happen to a slanderous person (verse 22)?
 What should you do if something you’ve said comes between you and someone else (verse 23-24)?
 Do you need to be reconciled with anyone? What is stopping you from doing this?
 Divide a piece of paper into two columns. On the left, make a list of Jesus’ statements that begin, “But I tell you…” (verse 22, 28, 32,
34, 39, 44). On the right, write what the world says about these issues (look in the prior verse). Which way is easier? Which way do you
live?

I will…
 Write out the resolutions in Psalm 101. There are 16 of them, 2 in each verse.
 Write out your own version of what you will do (and will not do) as a woman behaving wisely in your house.
 What would these resolutions look like in your own life, in your rooms of your heart and your home?

Good godly girlfriends Read Psalm 101:6

 While you can admire many great teachers and preachers from afar, a mentor is someone with whom you have a personal
relationship—someone who can “dwell with you.” Who are your mentors?
 What’s the hardest piece of advice you’ve ever received from a mentor? Did you follow it?
 To whom are you a mentor? How do you keep yourself filled the Spirit and refreshed with the word so you can be a good godly
girlfriend?

A Morning Prayer
 Write Psalm 46:5 on a card and put it near your alarm clock, toothbrush or coffeepot – something you will see first thing every
morning. Make this your morning prayer.
