Photo Design
Description:

A photograph I took personally and

edited in Photoshop.

Date:

10/17/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Canon 4Ti DSLR Camera

Objectives:

Learn Basic photography skills

Use a digital camera to take a quality
image and then download it
Size and crop the image
Adjust image brightness, contrast, and
saturation levels

Process:

I took this picture with my Canon

4Ti DSLR camera and then added
design elements such as the shape
tool and the text tool in Photoshop
to create an image that could be used
as a flier.

Logos
Description:

Three variations on a logo for the same

company.

Date:

10/31/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different,

original logos to fit a company.Market
research: gather opinions from at least
ten people about which logo appeals
most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create
and draw your logos. Refine one logo
with variations for color

Process:

This was my most popular idea for a

logo. I created the saw with the ellipse
tool and the pen tool. Then I created a
small circle for the middle of the saw
and found a font that I could put the dot
for the i in the middle circle of the saw.
Then I found another font that was a
little more formal and would stand out
against the main text and made it the
complimentary color of the main text.
Then I made the whole design in grayscale and put it on a color background.

Montage
Description:

One image blended into another image with

an inspirational quote.

Date:

10/24/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and

dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images
together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop
skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of
the image
Apply typography principles
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title
with varying text size.

Process:

I downloaded two images from the Internet

and loaded them into Photoshop. I pasted
the image of Gandalf onto the image of trees
with the butterflies and added a layer mask.
Then I blended the edges using decreased
opacity of the brush tool. I added the words
and added a vibrance layer mask, which I
erased a bit around Gandalf and where the
light enters the image.

Website
Description:

A website designed to showcase a

personally designed logo.

Date:

11/21/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad++
TextWrangler
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a

.png for a web page
Write content to describe the process
of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of
HTML and CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo,
using Photoshop color picker.

Process:

I decided on what logo I wanted to

use, then created the body copy. Using
html, I edited the headers and got my
bullet points in the right order. Using
CSS I made my headers and links
the colors of my color scheme and
I added a couple of div tags to make
the background slightly transparent
and to center my logo. I also added a
background image instead of a solid
color.

Brochure
Description:

A brocure on a company called

Castle Tours that takes tourists to
see various castles in Europe.

Date:
12/5/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded

document.
Create an original, new logo and use
it in a brochure.
Incorporate at least four quality
images, not including the logo. One
should be clipped in Photoshop and
text-wrapped in InDesign so the
text follows the cutout shape of the
image.

Process:

First, I designed the logo in Illustrator,

and then I took it into InDesign and
designed a brochure. I used filler
text for a while, but I came up with
my own text a little later. I cut out a
portion of one of my castle images
in Photoshop and then wrapped my
text around it.

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use

appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to
improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this
page.
Create a project folder with image, logo
and InDesign document to keep links in
InDesign intact.

Process:

I did some sketches, got votes on them,

and then designed in InDesign. I drew out
a black rectangle in InDesign and then put
about 3/4 of a circle on top of that and
pasted the image of the man doing his
cool moves inside of it.

Letterhead
Description:

A matching letterhead and business

card for the same company.

Date:
11/7/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator &

InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or
personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent
layouts for a business card and
letterhead.

Process:

First, I sketched out a couple of logo

ideas and asked people which they
liked better. It came down to two of
them which I ended up combining
when I designed the actual logo in
Illustrator. I found a couple of fonts
that made me think of folk art without
being too artsy to use as well. Then I
applied it to my letterhead, trying to
leave enough room for the letter.

Event Ad
Description:

An event ad designed in usig a scanned

image.

Date:

10/10/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
Scanned Image of myself at 4 years old

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing

Find, scan and import a high-quality
image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message
and audience.
Learn to use only Word design
features without using any Adobe
programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I found and scanned in an image, and

then created the background using
similar colors to the background of
the picture using Word. I tried to keep
all the shades of green within the
same actual color and make the words
bold enough that you can read them
without too much difficulty. I also tried
to line up the text on the left hand
side with the shape on the right.
