Three Fires introduction PowerPoint
Native American packet Three Fires Note page and Michigan Map
ELMO
Projector
Students are able to move to different spots in the room during the partner
reading. The rest of the lesson is spent at their seats

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
Ask students if they can remember any tribes that live in Michigan. Ask them if they
have heard of the Three Fires.
Show students the introduction PowerPoint to the Three Fires. Explain to students
how the three tribes are connected and how they helped each other out.

Put students in partner groups based on reading levels (pair lower with higher). Give
students The Mitten: Three Fires reading pamphlet. Students must read the
information in the packet and take notes on their note sheet provided in their packet
labeled The Three Fires Notepage. Show students how you have underlined the
most important facts that they need. They need to sort those underlined sentences
into the boxes on their sheet. Also, tell students that they dont need to write things
word for word. This is good practice taking notes. They can write bullet point lists
and shorten things.
Let students sit in places around the room to read with their partners. Walk around
to the groups and help them sort out the facts and to find things in their pamphlet.

Students who finish can go back to their seats and work on the activities in the back
of the pamphlet.

Once all students have finished reading and note taking, send them all back to their
seats. Have students share the notes they too and use the ELMO to write down their
notes and share them with the students. Tell the class to copy down things that they
dont have.
Have students turn to their Michigan Map in their packet. Tell them that we will be
mapping out where the different tribes of the Three Fires lived. Color in each tribe
one at a time using the ELMO to provide example for students, giving the students
time in-between to color theirs.
