Description:
An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.
Date:
10.24.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
I cropped the background image to 8.511.
I selected the GIRL SPLASH image which already has a black background. I fit it within the design
background.
I selected the EARTH image and placed it in the bottom right corner.
I selected the GALAXY image and placed it at the top of the design.
I used the brush tool in a variety of different opacity levels to blend the galaxy around the other two
images. I then continued to use the brush tool with different opacity levels to blend, highlight and fade
different elements throughout the design.
I selected the GIRL SILHOUETTE image and selected most of the image and placed it over the galaxy. I gave
it a fun filter around the edges to make it slightly transparent over the galaxy.
I selected the STAR image and placed it into the design. I filtered it with inner glow, made it brighter, and
then used the brush tool with 20% opacity to take away some of the density of the color.
I added the text to be located and placed within the 3rds grid upper right corner, and enhanced the words
earth and listen to stand out. I added the speakers name, Shakespeare and faded it.
I brightened up the galaxy behind and around the GIRL SILHOUETTE image to help enhance the typography.

A two sided duplex folding brochure..
Date:
12.05.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two sided folded document.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.
Process:
I set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into two sections with the concept that the smaller
section would be the flap of the brochure that had a locus flower cutout through it, and the larger section would
be the body of the brochure.
I used lotus flowers throughout the brochure to create repetition and flow. They were included in the logo, as a
photo, and as a cutout in the brochure.
For the image of the girl in yellow I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background
of the image. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge and apply contrast to the
outline. The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a softer image that didnt look so sharp and
cutout against the brochures background. I then placed the photo into InDesign where I used the text wrap
option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and designed my brochure around the colors of the logo.

Three logo variations for the same company.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
I initially used the ellipse tool to create the basic shape of the designs. I then used the direct select tool to
manipulate some of the curves. After many rough drafts, I took a vote on which ones were liked best. I chose
the one I liked best and which was voted on most to refine. I refined the typography, colors, and font choices, as
well as placement to add better visual communication. I also worked with font variations to give a professional
appeal, and even tried getting more contrast by changing the sizes of the words.

Description:
Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.
Date:
11.04.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign
Process:
I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I also used the pen tool to custom create these
simple shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI
file into this document.
I decided to make my first page a letterhead. I positioned the placed logo in the top left corner of my letterhead.
I made sure to keep it at least .5 away from the edges. I then typed the contact information into a text box and
positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I added in a bold line to unify the information and to get
some repetition from the logo. I finally added in echo sound waves for some repetition.
On my second page I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then
copied/pasted the logo onto both business cards. I kept the logo and contact information about the same size as
the information on the letterhead. I made sure that no important information came any closer than 1/8 from
the edges. I repeated the colors echo sound waves.

Description:
A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.
Date:
11.21.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangle, Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating the logo and its audience appeal.
Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Identify hex colors ofr web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.
Process:
I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had previous experience in html coding, but very little, I think
considered to many. It was also interesting to use thehttp://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have
something check to see if I had any problems with my code. With coding, you learn more as you play more.
After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I
then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and
using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Myanmar MN. I declared some backup sans serif fonts just
in case the viewers browser didnt have this font. I also used padding and break tags around the logo and text
so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of
working with CSS.

A full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.
Date:
10.11.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word, HP scanner, PDF converter
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign SKills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo, and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
I scanned the diving board image, and after inserting the image into Microsoft Word, I immediately decided that
I need to find the right location for the body text. Because of the minty greens through the photo, I decided to
stick with a bright red text box to go with his cape.
I chose two separate fonts for appropriate visual communicating. Then finalized the Ad with a pretend logo for a
business named Whole Books by using Microsoft Word elements. Programs I used: Microsoft Word, HP Scanner,
smallpdf.com (PDF converter).

Black and White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.
Date:
10.02.2015
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130/ Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Illustrator
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign SKills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo, and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
I first created four separate sketches for my layout options. Then I used my sketch as a guide to create this layout
in Adobe InDesign. I used sharp black and white angles and arrows for repetition and contrast. I also emphasized
the word leadership for more contrast, but had an arrow pointed toward the word graduate to create a good
focal point. I left white space and kept my body copy small. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.
I am trying to appeal to recent graduates who are ambitious enough to choose be leaders to their peers, and to
inform them how this leadership conference will help them reach this goal.
