Objectives
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the
audience.
Process
I used Illustrator to create three logos for a company named Prevail Coaching that does fitness coaching. My
first idea was to supersize the V in Prevail to look like the silhouette of a fit person-wide shoulders and narrow
waist. The second one was to create outline-like weights on a bar so it was almost secondary but helped tie in
the message. The third idea was the shape of a hand weight incorporated into the middle of the text. For the
first logo I changed the text size to create a larger V. On the second one I used a series of straight lines, both
vertical and horizontal, to create the look of a weight bar, and then applied a stroke effect that was rounded
on the end. The third shape I used the pen tool to trace around a photo of a hand weight, and then smoothed
the somewhat choppy lines with the Simplify command in Illustrator. I used Complementary, Monochrome,
and Triadic color schemes. After critique, I revised the second design for the finished product. I made the
word Prevail slightly bigger, brought both lines of text closer to the middle bar for better grouping, changed
the color scheme, and thickened the lines of the barbell. I used guides in Illustrator for alignment both
horizontally and vertically.

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document using a new, original logo and at least four quality images.
Include at least 250 words of original body copy. Wrap text around an image and use paragraph styles.
Process
I used Adobe Illustrator to create a simple logo for a new business called Medic Forge. I chose a strong sans
serif font for the word Medic and a stencil style font for the word Forge. I then added a white cross-a medical
symbol-inside the D of Medic to add interest. I used Adobe InDesign to create a two-sided document and
added ruler lines to make the distinction between three flaps on the front. I chose a strong blue color because
blue is generally associated with emergency medicine, and two coordinating colors, orange and lime green,
to add contrast and pop. I selected photos from online sources and from my own collection from our local
fire department. I started with solid rectangles for the background, and then added triangles for contrast. I
chose white text so that it would be easy to read against the blue background. I found a collection of SVG
icons online that I used for the inside and back cover. After the first round of critiques, I resized some of
my images, added body copy, resized my logo and added more color to the front side. Using Photoshop, I
cropped out the background of one of my photos and then wrapped the surrounding text around it. After the
final critiques, I adjusted alignment and leading on my headings and text, adjusted sizing on my front cover
heading, and refined the cutout picture on the inside.

Objectives
Create a spiritual poster montage with a strong focal point, unified layout with two or more images blended
together gradually using masks.
Process
I had a quote in mind regarding couples working together to ascend. My first idea was to have a
mountainscape of some kind with hands or a couple helping each other up as the second photo. I found my
background image and the photo of two clasped hands at FreeImages.com. During my search for photos
I was inspired to put a photo of the temple in this also, bringing the message really together, so that it
would show not only can we ascend, but where and how. I found a high resolution photo at LDS.org that
included two pops of color in red and orange that I felt fit in beautifully with the background. I used Adobe
Photoshop and started with the background, resizing to 150 ppi and made it 16 inches x 12 inches. I then
opened the other two photos and used the lasso tool with 50px feathering to crop out what I wanted and then
dragged those images to the background. I resized the new layers and added a layer mask to each. I used
the Brush tool with varying degrees of size, hardness, and opacity to blend the two top images together. I
added text for the quote and changed types and sizes for emphasis. After critiques I made adjustments for
alignment, sizing, and more blending.

Objectives
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS to create a single web page with an original logo and
content describing the process.
Process
I used the HTML editor Text Wrangler to edit and refine the HTML and CSS for this page. I used a logo
that I created in a previous project for the image and followed that color scheme. In Photoshop, I opened
up the logo and used the eyedropper tool to discover the hex numbers for the orange and blue colors. I then
made changes to the CSS file for fonts and colors. After critique, I changed the alignment of my image,
increased padding around headings and the image, and changed the URL link text.

Objectives
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Process
I chose my color scheme with an idea in mind to use my sons Captain America shield as a prop. While
shooting a couple of pictures our family dog ran into the shot and I was inspired to add him in as the subject,
rather than the shield as I originally intended. I had chosen the Tetradic color scheme first, but with him in
the picture it was a perfect mix for the red, blue, green, and orange scheme. I used a Canon Elph Powershot
340HS to take the picture and Photoshop for editing. I applied editing for levels, saturation, color balance,
and sharpen. I created an 8.511 layout and added my photo to that, resized, and started adding elements for
the design. I chose to repeat the star and stripes throughout the design. I wasnt sure what message I wanted
my piece to have-something patriotic, something generic, something superhero themed, and that showed in
my first draft piece. One of my critique partners, Alexandra, suggested I find a Captain America quote to pull
the message together. I did a Google search for quotes and when I saw this one I knew it was the right one.
Adding the stripes to the design piece seemed to pull it all together with the message I wanted. On a side
note, our dog (the one in the picture) is named Bucky after the character in the Captain America movies, so
the quote I chose was even more fitting than just for loyalty and companionship.

Objectives
Use a new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Process
I used Adobe Illustrator to create a new logo to describe my web design business. I chose a strong sans serif
font for a W and then a script font for an M and intertwined the M around the W. I used the same sans serif
font for the words Web Designs. I saved a version of this logo and then placed it into Adobe InDesign to
create the letterhead and business card. A sample design I had seen on the internet earlier gave me the idea
to put a solid line across the top and bottom of the letterhead and I also added a dot into the solid line on the
top and bottom of the letterhead for contrast. I used that same element in the business card. After critiques I
made changes to the alignment and proximity of the contact information on both the letterhead and business
card, changed some of my font and font styles, thickened the letter M to make it more clear, and added a back
side to the business card.

Adobe InDesign
Objectives
Create a news flier using InDesign with one image and one logo applying design principles and appropriate
typography.
Process
I first created 4 sketches to start the flow of ideas. I followed both the zig zag and clockwise flow for the 4
sketches. I picked my favorite sketch and recreated it in Adobe InDesign. I added a couple of other elements
not in my sketch and shaded text to emphasize the most important details. I was given the photo, logo, and
text copy for the flier. After two critique sessions I edited the copy and layout of elements to simplify the flow
and create a more whole document. I incorporated contrast in the black, white, and gray shades and used
black as the emphasis color. I believe this final poster follows the clockwise flow of information.

Objectives
Create a full bleed design with a high quality scanned image with appropriate color scheme and typography.
Process
I scanned the image from a magazine, then opened it in Word to begin the design process. The photo that
I chose had a great visual focus towards the inside and down, and I felt like it needed to be a landscape
orientation rather than portrait. I chose the color red from the two lines on the firefighters helmet for the
right side and added contrasting text for the beneficiary of the event. I wanted the most important details to
be larger and less important details to get progressively smaller, so I kept that in mind when I added titles and
body copy. I used a Canon all in one printer/scanner/copier to do the scan, Microsoft Word for the design,
and Adobe Acrobat Pro to convert from PDF to JPEG.
