Montage
Date, Course, Instructor: October 24th, 2015; Visual Media; Ben Pingel
Description: A spiritual montage made by the blending of two or more
images, and the use of typography.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing):

I set the background image to 1650 by 1272 pixels. I then made changes
to the image such as levels, vibrant, brightness, color selection, and
sharpening.

I then made some changes to the image of the hand holding the fly such as
levels, vibrance, brightness, color selection, and sharpening. I then lassoed
the part of the image that I wand and turned the opacity to 60% and
had feathering on. I the selected that image and moved the hand to the
background image, then I added a mask.
With the black paint selected and an 80% opacity, I took the brush tool,
and painted away the image edges that I did not want to be visible.
I then did a different size brush tool and turned down the opacity to 40%
and continued to brush the image to make it been in with the background.
I switch from black paint to white paint at different opacities on the brush
tool to get the blend look that I wanted.
I then add a inner shadow effect filter on the background image to give the
image a bit more of a darker feel.
I added some type with two contrasting fonts. The body text was hard to
read in white, so I added a black box behind the text layers and turned
down the opacity to make text more readable. I changed the size font on
the body text for Like the fly fisherman to highlight and correlate the
main message with the title. I then also changed to font color of tempts
us with counterfeit lures to highlight the overall message again.

Business Card

Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a

personally created logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used both illustrator and indesign

together. I brainstorm some ideas for a name of a boot business and then
looked for a good manly color scheme. I outline a picture of a boot with
the pen tool and made a nice simple vector graphic out of the trace. I
choose to do a simple but catch the eye logo to get my message to my
audience that this is an awesome boot company. I then used the same
patterns and themes in both my business cards and letterhead.

Brochure
Date, Course, Instructor: December 5th, 2015; Visual Media; Ben

Description: Tri-fold Brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I first set up a demo fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into six
sections. I wanted to go with the trip-fold setup, the outer left being the
fold that would be next after opening the front of the brochure. After
opening both the front and middle flap it would expose the whole inside
of layout of the brochure. I feel with this layout I was able to fit the most
information and have a more intricate design.
I used squares and lines throughout the brochure to create repetition and
flow. I chose to do the color scheme that I did because it was a bright, fun
and hip color scheme that I feel students of all ages would attract. I also
chose pictures with Asian students because that is who my audience is.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and then and expanding
my text. The font style SignPainter was used in my logo. I expanded the
lettering and the connected it with the swirl and air plane.
For the image of the young Asian girl I used the quick selection tool
in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then
proceeded to refine the edges of the selection with the refine mask. This
made my edges smoother and cleaner to make it look professional. I then
inserted that image in InDesign by using the placing icon. After all that
was done I then used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the
alpha channel of the image.

Imaging
Date, Course, Instructor: October 24th, 2015; Visual Media; Ben Pingel
Description: The objective of this project was to demonstrate good

photography and image editing skills both in camera and Photoshop. The
second objective was to incorporate a color scheme into a poster layout
with original photo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I first

sketched out and brainstormed where and what kind of photo I was going
to take. I wanted to take a sunset picture outside by trees and grass, so
I knew I was going to have to go for a analogous color scheme. It was
important to me to have good lighting and make sure I didnt completely
white out my photo, so I used my 6D Cannon camera with a Sigma
35mm lens to ensure I got the shots I wanted. After taking the desired
photos I went back to the sketch board and put together several different
design layouts I would be experimenting with in Photoshop. I brought
my images into Photoshop and made the necessary edits such as light
levels, sharpness, saturation/vibrance, and color balance. Later, after the
first draft I learned how to use the spot healing tool and used it to take
out a band-aid that was on the models left arm. After editing the photo, I
used one of my design ideas on a 8.511 layout that included my photo,
text, and repeating design elements. The next step with the design was to
incorporate my color scheme that I had chosen prior to taking the photo.
I incorporated this color scheme in the box shapes and lines in the design.
I decided to have my text be white because they would be more visible. I
used the color wheel and the eye dropper tool to match my color scheme
with my photo a little better then what it started out to be. I decided to
keep my design simple and clean, so that it was professional, and would
be fitting for my audience. I felt the same way when it came to the text
and quote that would be coupled with the photo and design. I wanted it
simple, but at the same time make the viewer think about what they were
reading, and how it would affect them.

Logos
Date, Course, Instructor: October 24th, 2015; Visual Media; Ben Pingel
Description: Logo for a business or organization.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): When brainstorming about

how I would make this logo stick out to my audience was the power
of randomness. What do a hen and rooster have to do with video
absolutely nothing. I didnt want just through anything down and think
that it would be great because it was random. I wanted it to connect to
the business somehow. The business is a husband and wife team so I
thought a hen and rooster would represent them quite nicely and grab
the attention of their audience. I first started with an outline of a hen and
rooster making sure to give the hen a more curvy look and the rooster a
slim and strong stance. I really like to use shapes and so I started to put
together geometric shapes by using the pen tool. I made the hen and
rooster separately and then cut them in half by using the scissor tool and
the + and point tool. I then connected both sides. I choose my colors
based on the color of chickens gullets, beaks, and feat. The decision of
the font was based of wanting something simple but bold. I used the live
paint bucket options to merge my shapes and then be able to put colors in
my shapes.

Programs and Tools: Adobe Illustrator CC 2014

Web Page
Date, Course, Instructor: November 21st, 2015; Visual Media; Ben
Pingel

Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created

logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): The programs that I used to

for this project was Text Wrangler for my HTML and css editing, and
Photoshop to draw the color number from my logo to incorporate in
the overall web page design. I first had to make some corrections on
my HTML this week to make sure it complete was validated. I was then
able to put all my focus on the actual design of my web page using css.
I didnt want my logo to be in the center of the page, so I floated it right.
I changed the font size on the first paragraph to emphasize what this
webpage is all about. I incorporated my logo color scheme to the overall
webpage. I added a the evergreen background image because I thought
it would make the web page stand out a bit more and tie into my theme
of BootsMan being and outdoor manly boot company. One of the last
thing that I performed was making sure the padding and spacing on my
paragraphs, heading, and logo were evenly spaced out. I would say one of
the most frustrating thing about this project was the fact that you can have
some cool fonts on your css but they wont show up because that certain
computer doesnt have the font. I can understand now why its important
to have at least three options of fonts on both your body and title font.

Flier
Date, Course, Instructor: October 3rd, 2015; Visual Media; Ben Pingel
Description: Black and white promotional flier to promote a graduate
leadership conference to help develop business leadership skills among
graduates.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles):

I used free hand sketching to brainstorm what kind of layout would be
most appealing to this type of audience. After putting all of my design
ideas together I used Adobe InDesign to put those ideas together. It was
really important to me to focus on enhancing the visual flow and I felt
that my flier did a good job at naturally doing that. The flow started with
the stock image, leading into the conference title, into the text body, and
flowing back into her. After choosing the image, I focused on the shapes.
I chose to keep it simple and use boxes. I chose the box shape to give
it structure and unity, expounding on simplicity. I divided the image,
putting the boxes on the left-hand side. I blurred out the image on the left
hand side, added the boxes, and lowered the opacity so my white font,
that was against a white background, would be solid and non-distracting,
contrast against the white text body. I also enlarge the font to size 11,
getting rid of all widows and making the font uniformed, professional and
easy to read for the viewer. For the conference title, I used a larger font,
again keeping it clean and simple, easy for the viewer to get the needed
information. I wanted to keep the shapes in uniform, so I added the 90
degree Ls, putting more focus on the title, as well as the body copy.
