The basic property that dierentiates ordinary steel and stainless steel is that the latter
has good resistance to corrosion, staining and rusting. This is due to the higher
chromium percentage in stainless steel that forms a resistive layer. Stainless steel nds
many applications in the form of bars. They are used in heavy engineering, architectural
structures such as beams and columns, transmission towers, automobile and shipping
industries and furnaces to name a few. The various kinds of bars commonly used are:

Stainless Steel Square Bars

Stainless Steel Square Bars are typically found in range of 12mm-40mm sizes (0.5inch
1.5inch). They are perfect for applications where superior strength and high corrosion
resistance is needed. Stainless steel square bars have a durable dull nish. They are
commonly used for structural projects where the materials are exposed to elements like
acidic substances, salt water or chemicals. There are two types of square bars that are
produced differently. They are:
Cold Drawn and Polished: These are usually found in the size range of 5mm-50mm.
They have four dierent tolerance grades H9, H1, H11 and ASTM-A484. As the
name suggests, they have a cold drawn and polished nish. Typically their lengths
vary from 3m to 6m. The ends of the bars have plain, smooth and sharp edges. The
surface nish has a Ra Value of up to 0.2um, which can be modied as per
requirement.
Hot Rolled: These are usually found in the size range of 16mm-50mm. As the name

suggests, they have a hot rolled nish. Their lengths are in the range of 3m to 6m
but can be varied for specic requirements. The ends of the bars have plain,
smooth and sharp edges.
The major stainless steel bar producers in India include Steel Authority of India (SAIL),
Mittal Corp. Limited (MCL), India Steel Works and Ambica Steels among others. Ambica
Steel has been Indias largest Speciality Steel producer since many years. Apart from
Stainless Steel Square Bars, its other products include Hexagon Bars, Flat Bars, Forging
