Unit 2 Computer Systems

Setting up a System
You are currently working in the ICT Support Section of a relatively new web development company that
specialises in the incorporation of high-resolution graphics and video on web pages. Recently the company has
been experiencing good growth and has taken on more designers and programmers to meet increased business
needs. However, it is generally accepted that the commercial success (and professionalism) of their designs
and solutions is limited by hardware and software which is quickly becoming obsolete in such a fast-changing
industry.
This new web development company have acquired new hardware and software. As an IT technician you have
been asked to ensure all items are installed correctly.
Tasks
1) Set up a standalone computer system and correctly install a printer and scanner.
Note: You will need a photographic evidence of you completing this task. (P5)
2) You need to ensure that a selection of computers have different settings.
Firstly, create a checklist to include; mouse setting set to left hand; screen resolution; desk top themes;
font size; configuration and use of narrator and magnifier.
Note: Now configure a computer system to have all the setting as stated above. Also use annotated screen
shots for evidence of completing each task. (P6)
3) Having completed the practical activities above, you must test the configured system and software
settings that made the system more appropriate for end-users. Using the test plan provided, test each of
the configurations. (P7)
4) Write an evaluation of the performance of the system ensuring that you link it to how you configured the
computer system and software setting in order to help the users perform their tasks
Explain how and why these configurations made the system more usable for end users. (M3)

5) In a report explain and justify improvements that could be made to a computer system to further help the
users. (D2)
6) Undertake routine maintenance tasks on a standalone computer system e.g. defragmentation, disk
clean-up, deleting temporary files from your system, cleaning hardware (i.e. keyboard, mouse, display
screen equipment), replacing consumables e.g. printer paper, ink or toner cartridges etc. and other
maintenance tasks you might discover. (P8)

You are encouraged to use Internet and books as resource tools. However, any
student discovered to have plagiarised Internet or non-ICT sources will
receive a severe reprimand and be placed on a Learner Contract.

This will also apply if you copy from other students or allow students to copy from
you! In addition, you will have to do all the work all over again.
So, please make the wise decision not to copy and paste! In the long run,
you will learn more, apply your knowledge better and NOT GET INTO
TROUBLE!
