Assist and sit with the children as they work on their craft today.
Give each child a set of materials. Each child should have a pre-cut bookmark.
Let the child color the bookmark and decorate with stickers.
In todays lesson the children will learn how quickly we can turn away from God and complain when
we dont get what we want.
GAMES

Seek and Share game

Materials : 2 packs small treat (biscuits or something small), 2 packs enough for the 10 kids in
each team
Share with the children that our game today remind us of the people of long ago that complained and
grumbled against God for so many reasons. One of their complaint was about food. They have been
traveling for a long time and their food was finished.
Ask the children to gather around teacher. Tell the kids that today, we will have a finding game.

Choose 2 teams with 10 children per team and choose a Seeker (maybe choose a child that is the
older of the group).
Now tell the teams that hidden inside the room is a Special Treat that the Seeker in their team has
to find and share with the team. Teachers to guide the Seeker in finding the treat in case he/she
has difficulty.
After Seeker finds the small treat and tries to share with the team of course it will not be enough
and some will not have any. Explain to the kids that this is how the Israelites felt and they complained
and grumbled.
Now Teachers announce and tell the team members that for playing the game each team member will
get a treat. Explain to them that God did provide for the Israelites despite their complaining and
grumbling.
INTRODUCTION TO BIBLE LESSON
Do you know children that the Bible is God's word? Now, some people think the Bible is a book of
rules, telling what you should and shouldn't do. The Bible certainly has some rules in it. They show
you how life works best. But he Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing. It's about
God and what He has done.
No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. You see, the
best thing about this Story is it's true.
There are lots of stories on the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how
God loves his children and comes to rescue them.

BIBLE STORY

Numbers 11
The People of Israel Complain

Bible Story telling via Visual Aid

When God wanted to move His people to a new location, the pillar of cloud would lift from the
tabernacle and start to move. When the clouds lifted, everyone had to stop what they were doing,
take down their tents, and pack up everything. God's people didn't have cars or buses to ride in; most
people had to walk.
Everyday too, as the dew settled on the ground, the Lord sent manna down from heaven for the
people to eat. But some of the people really wanted meat to eat, and they started to complain about it
too.
Each time the cloud lifted there was lots of things to do. So, much like we complain, Israel began to
grumble about all their troubles.

SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY

MATERIAL: A few cookies.

Randomly distribute two cookies to some children and one cookie to others. Wait to see if the children
who only received one cookie complain. As soon as you hear a complaint, use the complaint as an
opportunity to talk about complaining.
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION
(Teachers, sit with your children so you can easily pray with and for them as you do your huddle.)
Let's Talk about it!
What is complaining?
(Complaining is saying you dont like something.)
Can you remember a time when you complained?
(Draw the children out.)
Does anyone know what the Bible says about complaining?
(Do everything without complaining or arguing [Philippians 2:14 nib].)
What was israels sin in this story?
(They complained and rejected the Lord by saying they wanted to go back to Egypt.)
What was israels complaint in this story?
(They didnt like only eating manna. They wanted meat.)
Can you think of a time when you complained? what did you complain about?
(Accept any answer.)
What was israel complaining about?
(Manna to eat day after day)
What do you think the people of israel should have done instead of complaining?
(They should have been grateful for all that God had provided, and they should have prayed to God
for anything they needed.)
Passage: Colossians 1:1014
Paul encourages us in these verses to have endurance, patience, and joy as we serve God. He
wants us to give thanks to God, who has given us redemption and forgiveness through Jesus.
Just like the Israelites, we are tempted to grumble and complain against God when we do not like his
plan for us. Just like the Israelites, we deserve death, but instead we can receive rescue through
Jesus.
Whenever the Israelites sinned and God had mercy on them, he gave them mercy because he knew
that a Savior was coming. Anytime God has ever had mercy on anyone, it was because of Jesus.
PRAYER
Dear Lord,
Thank you for loving us despite our complaining and grumbling attitude sometimes.
Dear Lord, please help me remember your goodness always that I will have a grateful
heart. Amen.
