Dear Community,

In my last Principal’s letter, I gave a background of the last 150 years in California Adult Education and the main focal points mandated by the California legislature for our future work. In addition, I introduced you to the STC (The North Santa Clara County Student Transition Consortium) of which FUHSD Adult School, Palo Alto Adult, Mountain-View Adult, and DeAnza College and Foothill College are members.

English Language Acquisition/ESL

Do you need to learn English and improve how you speak, read and write in English? The state of California is funding English classes at FUHSD Adult School for adults who grew up speaking a language other than English. There is a range of classes to meet a variety of needs—from students who have had little exposure to English to those who have a background in English and just need to improve their skills. A test will determine which class is best for each student.

English Language Acquisition Classes (formerly ESL)* for 2015-2016:

Beginning Literacy: For students who

speak, read and write little or no English.

Beginning English: For students who

can sometimes understand English speakers but

at a minimal level.

Intermediate English: For students

who are able to “functionally” communicate in English but lack fluency. This level begins to infuse more complicated reading and writing.

Advanced English: This level of English has students read, write and speak English at a

level that will allow them to transition into our Adult Basic Education courses entitled English
Fluency.

All of the classes are free but students are required to:

a. Register for Placement Test in advance

b. Take a placement test and a post-test;

HS Diploma & H.S. Equivalency Exam

Adult Secondary Education (ASE) Department: High School Diploma and Equivalency Tests*

The Adult Secondary Education (ASE) Program assists students in achieving their High School Diploma or Equivalency Test (GED) and in preparing for college and work. Our Transition Team is available to work with you on your college and career goals.

To enter our program you must take a Placement Test and attend a Student Orientation to Academic Readiness (SOAR) orientation class at the Adult School. There is no processing fee. After your Placement Test and Orientation class you will make an individual counseling appointment with

a member of our Transition Team. We will help

you evaluate your transcript, and you will create

a personalized class schedule that supports your

learning goals. Classes are free and are held in both day and evening.

As part of your learning plan, you may decide to co-enroll in our Career Technical Education (CTE) courses or one of our partner community colleges to get both high school credit as well as training and/or college credit simultaneously. FUHSD Adult School, in partnership with Cupertino Rotary, has student scholarships to pay for college tuition, test fees, or bus fare for those who qualify. This can all be discussed at your individual counseling appointment.

For students who need to "brush up" on academic skills, we have the Adult Basic Education (ABE) department (see previuous page) that will do that and still allow you to earn high school diploma credit or prepare for the Equivalency Exam. Placement in ASE or ABE is based on your test score. You will need to bring all of your high school and college transcripts with you to your Placement Test.

You must pre-register as our classes DO fill up; first come, first served. You must sign up for both the Placement Test and the SOAR orientation class. The following Placement Test and SOAR Orientation sessions are:
