Business Card

Letterhead

Description: Matching letterhead and business card using a personally

designed logo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started off by tracing an image of Kanye
Wests face in Adobe Illustrator. Then I exported the image as a .tif to place in the
Adobe InDesign file. I added text boxes for my name, job title, phone numbers,
address, business and social media handles. I tried out multiple different layouts
for the text and this felt like it fit the most.
Then, I copied the information and .tif onto another page for the letterhead. I tried
to stay with the very simple concept. (Even though Kanye West is very elaborate,
his style is still very simple and chic.) I felt the black lines at the top with help
separate my information from the (hypothetical) body copy. I brought the opacity
on the Kanye West text box at the bottom of the page from 100% down to 5% so
stay subtle but to keep the body copy from overflowing into the bottom of the page.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
Message: I am Kanye Wests personal assistant and I schedule all his
appointments and appearances and people who have my business card or
letterhead know that they would go through me for his number, publicity and
social media.
Audience: Anyone looking to get a hold of Kanye West.
Top things learned: Its extremely difficult to trace a face in Illustrator without
making it look weird.
Color scheme: Black and white

Event Ad

Description: A full-bleed ad, made completely in Microsoft Word, to promote a

fundraising event.
Process: I scanned the image from Nieman Reports Magazine and used a color
box to cover the original text and the logo. I pulled the UNICEF logo from their
website and cut out in the white background in the image effects tab. I added in
the text boxes for the body copy, date, time, place and price. I was actually very
impressed with how well I could make an advertisement look while only using
Word. Programs used: Microsoft Word, HP LAserJet M5035 MFP printer (to scan
the image in) and http://pdf2jpg.net (PDF converter).
Message: I am running a charity event to raise money to help the Suk Wadi
Barada village in Syria. I wanted my image to grab the audiences attention by
showing something their donations could help support/save.
Audience: Anyone looking for ways to help people in Syria trying to
escape oppression.
Top thing learned: I learned how to create a visually appealing advertisement
completely in Microsoft Word.
Color scheme and color names: Complementary gold, indigo, white
and black
Title Font Name & Category: Univers Italic/Regular, san serif
Copy Font Name & Category: Cambria regular/bold, old-style
Scanned images used, sources, original sizes: The original image was
scanned from the Fall 2014 addition of Nieman Reports Magazine. The was 8.5 x
11 in., and I scanned it at 300 ppi so I could slightly manipulate it and print it. The
final scan size was 1265 x 1646.

Brochure

Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): First, I sketched out the design I wanted
on a piece of paper. Then, I cut out the excess elements in the photo of the black
perfume bottle. I cropped it in half to be able to create a center-fold design. I placed
the three images the full bottle and the two half bottle images in the Adobe
InDesign file. I had to play around with the design a little because it felt really
crowded with text in the center and with other photos. I wanted this design to be
very sleek and simple, like Kim Kardashians style. That is why I have very minimal
words and I only used two separate photos. I couldnt make it look professional
with more than that.
The final project is cut with a box cutter to fit to the perfume bottle.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop
Message: Tell my audience about Kim Kardashians first perfume.
Audience: Kardashian lovers and haters, alike.
Top Thing Learned: I learned about to compensate for the margins on the page
to create a center-fold brochure.
Title Font Name & Category: Georgian / serif
Word count: 108

Flier

Description: Black and white promotional flier designed in Adobe InDesign for a
graduate leadership conference.
Process: I first sketched out four possible designs on a piece of paper. These
designs included different shapes, logos, photos, fonts and accent elements. I had
more experienced designers evaluate my sketches to give me advice on which
designs were more dynamic and which would be the most attention-grabbing. I
then used Adobe InDesign to create the digital layout for the flier.
I chose a thick san serif font for the title to catch the audiences attention and to
begin to draw their attention into the flow of the layout I wanted them to follow. I
left a good amount of white space to keep the design from being cluttered because
element-heavy designs that have little white space are exhausting to look at and
often difficult to read. I used the fonts that I did because they are very simple
and readable, and they went well with the sans serif font in the logo for Vouant
Communication.
I was given the body copy, image and logo for the flier.
Message: My goal was to reach recent college graduates who are looking to
develop strong leadership skills and to have a competitive edge in the workplace.
Audience: Recent college graduates between the ages of 22-30 years old.
Top thing learned: Simplicity is key when trying to grab and keep an
audiences attention.

Montage

Description: An inspirational montage using two photos and typography

Process:

I cropped the background photo of the baby to 8.511

I moved the Gryffindor photo in front of the baby photo and added a mask
I painted a black to white gradient on the Gryffindor photo from left to right
I turned the opacity on the paintbrush down to 9% and used a very soft edge to
bring the background photo through more and to take the focus off the lion
I added a text layer with two contrasting fonts
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop
Message: I wanted to convey that bravery is important, no only when youre being
supported by others, but especially when youre standing alone and doing what
is right.
Audience: Anyone who is in need of a push to stand up to people even
their friends.
Colorized/Filter applied and where: I used the burn and dodge tools to
change the color a little after I used the saturation tool.
Top thing learned: You need to make sure you dont have multiple elements
competing for attention.

Logo

Description: Logo for an organization

Process: This was fun to make because Im planning to rebrand my moms bakery
for my senior project and I got to begin brainstorming for it. Since, during the
rebranding, I cant change her logo too much, I studied her current logo to see
how I could make it more modern and more creative. Its very different from what
her current logo is. I drew the basic cake shape in Adobe Illustrator with the pen
tool. I added the yellow stripes and turquoise dots with the shape tools and then I
changed the colors. I didnt want to make the three logos too different, but I tried to
make them all slightly unique from each other.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator
Message: The Little Bakery Shop is simple, but modern.
Audience: Community members who are looking for a bakery or who see it
driving by.
Top Thing Learned: How to draw using the pen tool
Color scheme: Complementary color names Brown and Teal
Font Name & Category: DIN Alternate Bold San Serif

Web page

Description: A web page designed to show and describe a personally

designed logo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created this Web page in TextWrangler.
I learned how to code in C++ when I was younger, but I had never used HTML or
CSS, so it was definitely a learn experience.
I used Adobe Photoshop to match the colors from my logo that I designed in Adobe
Illustrator. I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML and I learned how to
make images float to the center of the page rather than just the left or right. I also
learned how to change the margins on a page to make things fit where you want
them. I changed the fonts in the body copy and the headers. I added in backup
fonts for computers that dont have the fonts I used.
Programs/Tools Used: TextWrangler & Photoshop
Message: I want people in the area to know that The Little Bakery Shop is simple
and easy compared its extravagant competitors.
Audience: Anyone in the Boise metropolitan area
Top Thing Learned: How to make images float where I want them to go.
Color hex: Brown: #3b2e16, Yellow: #fdf7ba, Teal: #fdf7ba, Light Teal: #e8f5f6
Title Font Families & Category: (all names) DIN Alternate Bold, Arial
Bold, sans-serif
Copy Font Families & Category: (all names) Georgia, Century
Schoolbook, serif
Changes made to the CSS: I changed the font families, the colors to match my logo,
I made the image float to the middle of the page and I changed the padding on the
header so the text didnt overlap with the background.

Photography

Description: Take a photo and choose a color scheme to follow and demonstrate
good image editing skills and incorporate color into a poster layout with the
original photo.
Process (Programs, tools, skills): I used the FOCUS technique in the visual
media textbook to choose my color scheme. Then I used my Nikon D3200 camera
to photograph the books that fit my color scheme. I used Adobe Photoshop to
change the background color from a gray/brown to black/brown. The saturation
and levels did not need to be adjusted because I had adjusted my flash and camera
settings beforehand.
I designed a horizontal 8.511 layout which included my photo, a title, a quote and
the colors in my color scheme. I used the eye dropper tool to match my text colors
to the color scheme. I feel like my design is kind of busy, but I also want it to be
symbolic of journalism and I feel like it illustrates what being a journalist is like
very nicely. As my design elements I used similar boxes with color painted in and
slight blurs around them.
Message: I wanted to symbolically show what journalism is. As technically the
fourth branch of the government, it has a lot incorporated into it.
Audience: Students interested in going into journalism
Top thing learned: I learned to build the project on an artboard that is the
correct size. I had to completely remake my poster because I hadnt verified the
correct size of the artboard and my photo didnt fit.
Color Scheme: Brick monochromatic
