Practice #1
1. Assume that the speed of sound, c, in a fluid depends on an elastic modulus, E, with dimensions
FL-2, and the fluid density, , in the form c = (E)a ()b. If this is to be a dimensional consistency
equation (or dimensionally homogenous equation), what are the values for b and a? Is your result
consistent with the standard formula for the speed of sound? (c=(dp/d) o c=(E/); for gas
c=(kp/) if ideal gas c=(kRT). Write the units of all the variables of the equation in the SI and
BG systems.
2. If T is temperature and is viscosity what are the dimensions of the constants C and S in the
following equation (Sutherland equation), with dimensions FtL-2. Write the units of all the
variables of the equation in the SI and BG systems.

3. Problems 1.18, 1.37 (Fox, 8th edition)

4. Find the dimension of each term of the following equation. A very important equation is the
Bernoulli equation which relates the pressure P, velocity V, and elevation z between point 1 and
along a streamline for a steady, frictionless incompressible flow.
P1/ +V12/2 +gz1 = P2/ +V22/2 +gz2
6. Fill out the table with the Basic units of the three unit Systems

7. Leaking oil tanks have become such an environmental problem that the federal government has
implemented a number of rules to reduce the problem. A flow from a small hole in a tank can
be predicted from the following relation:
2p
Q = 0.61S
,

where Q is the leakage rate (gal/min),

S is the cross-sectional area of the hole causing the leak (in2),
p is the pressure drop between the inside of the tank opposite the leak and the atmosphere
pressure (psi),
is the fluid density in lb/ft3.
To test the tank, the vapor space is pressurized with N2 to a pressure of 23 psig. If the tank is filled
with 73 in. of gasoline (SG= 0.703) and the hole is in. in diameter, what is the value of Q (in
ft3/h)?

8. The density of a certain liquid is given by an equation of the following form:

= ( A + BT )eCP ,
where = density (g/cm3)
T = temperature (C)
P = pressure (atm)
For this equation to be dimensionally consistent, what are the units of A, B, and C?
9. In an article on measuring flows from pipes, the author calculated q = 80.8 m3/s using the
formula
2gV ( p1 p2 )
q = CA1
1 ( A1 / A2 )
where q = volumetric flow rate (m3/s)
C = dimensionless coefficient (0.6)
A1 = cross-sectional area 1 (m2)
A2 = cross-sectional area 2 (m2)
V = specific volume (10-3 m3/kg)
p = pressure
(p1-p2) = 50 kPa
g = acceleration of gravity (9.80 m/s2)
Was the calculation correct? (Answer yes or no and explain briefly the reasoning underlying your
answer.)
10. A letter to the editor says: An error in units was made in the article Designing Airlift Loop
Fermenters. Equation (4) is not correct.

V 2

p = 4 f ( L D)
2g

Is the author of the letter correct? (f is dimensionless)
