Pathways Kids Weekend Small Groups

This Curriculum is for the 6, 7, and 8 year olds.

This Weeks Scope

Bible Story: How the Lord Gave Christmas (Jesus is born) Luke 2:1-7
Bottom Line: God gave us the greatest gift. What will you give?
Memory Verse: God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in
him will not die but will have eternal life. John 3:16, NIrV
Life App: Compassioncaring enough to do something about someone elses need.
Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

Welcome Time
What You Need: Offering container
What You Do:
Invite kids to put their offerings in the offering container as they arrive.
Ask kids how they did on the Compassion Challenge last week. Whose needs did they see?
Were they able to show compassion and help someone with their need? [Make It Personal]
(Be ready to give an example of a need you saw this week.)
Ask kids what they think is a good gift. If necessary prompt them with some questions and they
can give you a thumbs up if it is a good gift or a thumbs down if they dont think it is a good gift.
For example: Would a bike be a good gift? How about a pillow? An electronic game? Soap? A
plant? A book? A doll? A toy car?

Activity #1
What You Need: 2 sets of Verse Cards Activity Page
What You Do:
Shuffle the Verse Cards and lay them face down on the floor in a grid pattern.
One kid flips over two cards.
If the cards match, the kid picks them up and it is the next kids turn.
If the cards dont match, the kid flips the cards back over and the next kid gets a turn to find a
match.
After all the matches are found, work as a team to put the verse in order.
What You Say:
God loves the world. That means God loves you! (Point to each kid and repeat God loves you.) And
God gave us the greatest giftHis one and only Son, Jesus. What is something you can give? (You
can give your time to show someone they are special, you can give your friendship to someone, you
can give a hug to show someone they are loved, you can give someone a present such as a candy
cane ornament, etc.) Show others you care about them by remembering our Compassion Challenge for
this week: [Bottom Line] God gave us the greatest gift. What will you give?

Activity #2
What You Need: Paper, markers, scissors, glue, decorating items
What You Do:
Remind kids of the Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] God gave us the greatest gift. What will you
give?
Ask kids to each think of someone they can give something to this week. Explain that it should
be someone they arent already planning on giving a Christmas present tosomeone who wont
expect a gift from them. What will they give that person? It could be a physical gift, or it could be
something intangible, like giving their time to do something for the person or playing a silly game
with a younger sibling. Or is anyone planning to bring in some last-minute donations for the Bite
Back Project?
[Make It Personal] (Tell kids about a time someone gave you a gift that you werent
expecting. What was it? Why did the person give it? How did it make you feel?)
Tell kids to use the supplies to make a gift tag for the person theyre giving a gift to.
While they work, ask kids to tell you what theyre planning to give and who theyll give it to.
Explain that theyll put the tag on a physical gift or they will hand it to a person theyre giving an
intangible gift to while they explain the gift.
What You Say:
Those are some great gift ideas! Youre really getting into the spirit of compassioncaring enough to
do something about someone elses need. Christmas time is a great time to give gifts, but my extra
challenge to you is to continue to give even after Christmaswhen people really arent expecting it.
[Bottom Line] God gave us the greatest gift. What will you give?

Activity #3
What You Need: Candy canes; 1 for each kid
What You Do:
Give each kid a candy cane as a gift.
Pray with kids.
What You Say:
God, Thank You so much for the greatest gift, Jesus. As we celebrate Christmas and Jesus birth, help
us to show others compassion and how much You love us all. Help us to remember You gave us the
greatest gift and help us to see ways we can give to others. Amen.

Activity #4 extra activity to do if have time because of Members Meeting upstairs

What You Need: Beanbag Review Activity Page, ping pong balls, Bibles, ABC papers, tape
What You Do:
Tape the A, B, and C papers in different areas of your space. (Can be on the wall, floor, counter
tops, etc.)
Give each child a ping pong ball.
Tell kids that youll be reading todays Bible story and asking some multiple-choice questions as
you go. After they hear the choices, they should toss their ping pong ball toward the letter of the
answer they choose.
Read the story and ask the questions.
After the last question, remind kids that they can give any and all of these choices: time, money,
and talents. Different situations will call for different ways of giving.
Then help kids look up Luke 2:1-7 in their Bibles.
Read the verses aloud one more time while kids follow along.
Challenge kids to read the Bible story to their family sometime this week. Ask them to think of a
specific time they will do this. It might be at lunch today. It might be on Christmas Eve. Maybe
they can do it before they open presents on Christmas day.
What You Say:
[Bottom Line] God gave us the greatest gift. What will you give? One of the best gifts YOU can
give people is to tell them about how God sent us Jesus. You can do that by telling them the story we
just read. But dont just stop there. Also tell them about how that baby grew up and died on the cross for
our sins so that we can be forgiven and live with God forever in heaven someday. [Make It Personal]
(Tell kids about a time you told someone about Jesus. How did you start the conversation? Did
you invite the person to your church? Were they open to hearing the gospel?)
