Coming

Soon in Tableau 9.0

This document provides an overview of the new
capabilities available in Tableau 9.0. Highlights
include: an entirely new experience for Tableau
Server, significant performance improvements,
new ways to easily prepare your data for analysis,
drag-and-drop analytics, updates to mapping
features, and much more.

Visual Analytics

Tableau 9.0 will simplify your ability to experiment

with and apply analytic techniques so that you can
think with your data, helping you uncover trends
and insights as quickly as you can ask questions.

Ad-hoc Calculations: You can type directly on the
row and column shelves or the marks card to add
fields or create ad-hoc calculations. If you want to
create a calculation, just double-click in the shelf or
marks card or double-click on a pill that is already
in the view to launch a mini-editor. As you type a
calculation in the editor, a list of auto-complete
options will appear so you can select the matching
field or function from a dropdown, making it easy
to quickly find and pick the right elements.

Once you create your new ad-hoc calculations, you
can drag them to the Data Window to save them as
a reusable part of the data source.

Drag and Drop Analytics: Tableau 9.0 has a new
Analytics Pane that makes common techniques --
such as reference lines, bands, totals, trend lines
and forecasts -- readily available and easy to simply
drag and drop into your visualization.

Its also easier for you to

edit, format and remove
the analytic items that
have been added to
your view, so you can
experiment with
different techniques as
you explore the insights
your data has to offer.

Instant Analytics: Instant Analytics provides an
interactive experience for comparing summary
information about a subset of marks to all the
marks in your view. For example, you can compare
the average for a few marks, to the average for all
the marks.

The Instant Analytics option appears when youve
added trend lines, reference lines, reference bands
or distribution bands to your view. Just select one
or more marks in the view and see analytical
indicators appear for the subset, while maintaining
the analytical indicators for the whole. You have
the option to toggle Instant Analytics to create the
best possible end user experience.

New Calculation Editor: The Calculation Editor has

been redesigned so that you can create calculated
fields faster, with fewer keystrokes and greater
accuracy. With this redesign, you can:
Use auto-complete.

Move the new floating dialog window around

the screen and see the impact of your
calculations and edits without closing the
dialog.

Drag and drop data fields from the data pane

directly into the Calculation Editor.

Drag and drop portions of a calculation from

the Editor into shelves, axes or the data pane
to more easily identify possible issues with long
calculations.

Level of Detail Calculations: New expressions in
the Tableau calculation language let you create
calculated fields that compute at arbitrary levels of
detail. This simplifies a large number of
calculations that used to require several steps and
makes it easy to create calculations that support
scenarios like cohort analysis and totals or
averages across segments.

You can easily calculate average sales per customer
in each time period by using a nested LOD
calculation that computes the total sales for each
customer ID; the results of the calculation are
segmented by timeframe when added to the view.
You can also author fixed LOD calculations, which
are not segmented by the view, so you can
continually use and compare the calculated value
in different scenarios.

In the example above, a fixed LOD calculation
computes the average sales per state. This fixed
calculation is subtracted from the standard
calculation that computes average sales. When
added to the view, the LOD Calculation for average
sales per state stays constant, so the view
represents the difference between the annual
average sales and the fixed average sales per state
(you can see how much below or above the fixed
average each states performance is by year).
Like Calculated Fields, LOD Calculations can be
added as dimensions, aggregated as measures and
used as filters.
New Selection Tools: There are two tools for
selecting multiple marks in a visualization to make
it easier for you to drill into specific data points and
explore levels of detail.
Lasso Selection: draw a freehand shape around
a number of marks at once to select them.
Radial Selection: select multiple marks by
drawing a circular shape over them.
You can access the new tools, along with pre-
existing ones like zoom, pan and rectangular
selection, from the redesigned Zoom Control
toolbar.

Enhanced Mapping
Beautiful, interactive maps are key to analyzing
data. Tableau 9.0 enriches the experience with
maps:
Geographic Search: A new search icon is now
available when you hover over maps. You can
enter a Continent, Country, State, County, City
or Zip Code. Tableaus search box suggests
locations of
interest
and then
auto-zooms
to a
location
once you
select the
one you
want.

Improved map selection, pan and zoom:
When you interact with a map in your browser,
the default behavior is now set to pan; the
redesigned floating zoom control offers a
toolbar where you can select lasso, radial and
rectangular selection tools. Youll notice a
smoother pan and zoom experience as well.

New Map Data: Tableau continually adds map
data for greater levels of detail and accuracy.
New and updated data supports geocoding,
point and filled maps, and map tiles.
Asia Pacific: Australian postal codes and
LGAs; special municipalities, cities and
counties in Taiwan; changes to city names in
Japan so that customers can match using
versions with affixes or without.
Europe, Middle East, Africa: Country info for
Egypt and Malawai, district municipalities in
South Africa, and German Kriese
Americas: Canadian FSAs, US Zip Codes and
County updates, FIPS code values for US
county geocoding, Argentinian
Departmentos, and Brazilian municipalities.

Data Preparation

New Data Preparation features help you structure,

reshape and clean your data so you can spend less
time preparing and more time analyzing your data.

Data Cleaning Utility: Messy Excel spreadsheets
are now easier to analyze. Tableau will
automatically detect the range of data in your
spreadsheets and remove extra headers, footers
and additional non-data rows and columns. You
can review the results to understand what changes
have been made.

Unpivot: This feature gives you an easy way to
rotate your data from a cross-tab format to the
normalized column format that works best for
visual analysis and exploration with Tableau.

On the Data Source Page, simply select multiple
columns and choose the unpivot command from
the drop-down. The columns will be unpivoted and
added to the data source grid, where you can hide
or re-label them. You can add new columns once
you have performed your unpivot.

Data Split: There are two new options for splitting
your data into multiple fields for analysis. Split
fields will be added to your data source so that you
can modify them and use them in further
calculations.
Automatic Split: If your data has a clear
delimiter, such as City, State Tableau can
detect the delimiter and split the field into two
columns (for example, one for City and one for
State).

Custom Split: You can launch a custom split

dialog and specify a delimiter for any string field in
your data.

Metadata Grid: Its now easier to see the metadata
that your data model is based on and quickly
rename fields and perform bulk actions (such as
hiding a number of columns). You can access the
new Metadata Grid from the same position as Data
Grid and type directly in fields to make your
changes:

New commands are also available in the data grid
and metadata grid, so you can perform common
actions such as editing an alias directly from the
data page. You can also initiate automatic and
custom split from these menus.

Connecting to Data

Tableau 9.0 continues to improve your data

connection experience as well as expand support
for data sources so that you can more seamlessly
get connected and stay connected to the data you
need to support your mission.

Kerberos Support: Kerberos authentication is now
available for Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server
Analysis Service and Cloudera Impala. Kerberos
support will provide single sign-on from the client
to the database, and you can use Kerberos smart
card authentication with Tableau. This creates a
seamless experience for end users while leveraging
organizations IT resources for authentication and
data security.

easy for you to understand your permissions by
providing immediate and detailed information in a
visually responsive UI.

Every object in the server now has a built-in

place page which provides you with key
information about the object and the ability to
take actions in one place. These pages are
available for Projects, Worksheets, Views, Users,
Group and Data Sources.

Other updates to Tableau Server include:

REST APIs enhancements: The REST APIs were
introduced in Tableau 8.2 to support
administrative control of Tableau Server. Tableau
9.0 extends the APIs with some of the most
commonly requested functions including:
o Publish and download data sources and
work
o Assign and delete user permissions to
projects, sites, workbooks and data sources
o Query and update data sources and
workbook data connections

High Availability: The high availability redesign

provides a more secure, more robust high
availability solution with straightforward
configuration and management features for
administrators. The redesign includes:
o More robust failover support:
A Cluster Controller provides
centralized failure detection and response
The ability to trigger manual failover
and failback
Administrative control of active
nodes, including the ability to set the
preferred active repository (in a new
GUI) for better support of
asymmetrical hardware
configurations
o Approachable Configuration: New
workflows and more feedback in the
configuration process make it easier for
both technical and business users to
configure your deployment for high
availability and ensure that your data
and server information are safe in the
process.
o Greater scalability: The new FileStore
feature is a scalability-focused redesign
of the data extract storage and
replication systems for the Data Engine.
FileStore provides significant speed
improvements for data replication,
eliminates Rsync, and removes the need
for failover for Data Engine processes;
there are no longer restrictions on the
number of data engine nodes per cluster,
and all data engines are active and read-
write so data is always accessible, in-sync
and secure.

Performance Enhancements

Tableau 9.0 performance enhancements make

workbooks load faster, improve dashboard
performance and make interactivity more seamless
with faster results and response.
Many of the 9.0 performance enhancements are
the result of leveraging high performance
capabilities of existing technology and advanced
hardware:
Parallel Query takes advantage of databases that
can perform queries in parallel to run multiple
queries at once, rather than sending them one
after the other.
Data Engine Vectorization speeds up the
performance of many extract-based workbooks
by taking advantage of modern CPU architecture
for faster processing and clear performance gains
Parallel aggregation effectively uses multiple
cores when there are more than 64,000 rows of
data in Tableau Extracts and other file-based
data sources. This parallel work takes advantage
of all the CPUs on your machine to provide
results more quickly.
Temp Table Support in Data Server makes
querying more efficient with databases that use
temp tables, such as SQL Server, resulting in
better performance for views that have large
filters, sets and ad-hoc groups.
More efficient cache and query behavior also
deliver performance improvements, especially for
opening and re-opening workbooks:
External Query Caching: Workbooks with
Tableau extracts will re-open more quickly
because query results are saved so queries are
not re-run every time you open a workbook.
Query Fusion recognizes related queries in a
single dashboard and combines them so there
are fewer queries to execute and dashboard
performance is improved.
Shadow Extracts create a faster text-based data
source experience. A workbook with a large
text or Excel file will re-open much faster.
