Attn: Graduate Selection Committee

My name is Luis Carlos Enriquez, and with this letter, I want to introduce myself and
express my interest in joining the master program of the Mechanical & Industrial
Engineering at the University of Toronto.
When I was in high school I was always curious and eager to learn about technology and
its current application. In that stage of my life I gave my first steps by building and
programming a robot from a magazine set. That opened my curiosity about
instrumentation and also robotics. In college as student of mechanical engineering I
learned about mechatronics, industrial instrumentation among other subjects. My
performance in those areas allowed me to work as laboratory assistant in the Industrial
Automation Laboratory of my faculty where my tasks included programing PLCs and give
several laboratory sessions related to mechatronics, instrumentation and robotics. That
gave me a broader understanding of the applications of instrumented and automated
systems. In my current job I have the chance to work with automated systems, where we
use downhole sensors to acquire information that is handled manually to take decisions
aimed to optimize production performance. That experience, made me understand that
even though instrumented systems with sensors and actuators are broadly applied in
many industries, in most cases they dont have built-in closed loop control systems or
automated optimization workflows which could lead to high efficiency performance. That
thought is what triggered again my interest in learning more about current technology, new
developments and application of industrial automation.
During my academic life, my creativity and learning skills helped me to have a good
performance in the projects I got involved in. For example: in high school at Ibarra city of
Ecuador I achieved the first place, among more than 200 participants from all the country,
in the National Physics contest called Albert Einstein. That is the most important
academic award in physics for high school students in Ecuador. In college, I graduated as
a Summa Cum Laude with an average score of 87.8/100, and being the second best grade
among almost 300 graduates that semester. I also remember my most gratifying academic
experience during my bachelor, which was to work with my partner on our Engineering
Project: Design and Construction of a Solar-Stirling Motor. It included thermodynamic,
heat transfer analysis, and also an integrated 3D simulation in Matlab to predict the
performance and the dynamic effects on the elements of the motor. That methodology
helped to optimize time and the number of motor prototypes to successfully conclude the
engineering project. The result satisfied the evaluators of the project who gave a very good
grade, 100%. Additionally to my academic activities, I was elected as representative
student for the Council of the University. That experience allowed me to improve my
leadership skills and gave me the opportunity to work for improvements in the academic
performance of the students and the University.
Thanks to my academic records, I got a job offer in 2012 from one of the worlds largest
oilfield services company, Schlumberger. I started working in Colombia, as oil production
engineer in the oilfield Casabe. My performance on the job and my learning skills gave me
the opportunity to join a new highly promising program in Houston starting at the end of
2013. I joined the team conformed of 21 members from 13 different nationalities. I totally

enjoy working with them because that helped me to develop my technical knowledge and
skills, as well as my interpersonal skills to work as team member, and later as team leader.
During these four years with Schlumberger, I worked in different projects related to oil
production optimization using data from downhole sensors. That information allows
diagnostics and optimization of system performance by operating downhole valves and/or
pumps. I also collaborated in the development, enhancement, and testing of new software
from the company.
My participation in those projects made me realize, that there are several opportunities to
implement automated systems to optimize performance in the oil & gas, and in many other
industries. Additionally, new technologies in electronics, communications, control, and data
analysis combined with creativity can generate cost-effective solutions to achieve the
objective of having highly efficient systems in industry, which may help to develop the
productivity and economy of my country. For that reason, I want to direct my knowledge,
skills and energy to that field of engineering. And, that is why I want to pursue a research
program in the areas of instrumentation, mechatronics and robotics in a highly qualified
university. I expect to acquire the knowledge and skills that will make me able to design,
develop and implement automated systems for the industry, and, why not, to improve
peoples life quality. With some online research and listening to some recommendations
from colleagues worldwide, I concluded that the best option is the Mechanical & Industrial
Engineering Department of University of Toronto. It is for that reason that I put in your
consideration my application to the M.A.Sc. of Mechanical Engineering at your respected
University. I hope that my technical and interpersonal skills will make me a valuable team
member of one of your research projects related to the subjects I mentioned before.
I will be glad of being interviewed if it is required or preferred. At the moment Im located in
Houston which makes communication and mobilization a little easier than from my home
country, Ecuador.
Thanks in advance for your consideration,
Sincerely,
Luis Carlos Enrquez C
