Entrance Test for admission to Ph.D.programme

Entrance Test for admission to Ph.D. programme shall be held on


December 25,2009 (Friday) from 10.00 a.m.-12.30 p.m. The eligible
candidates (as per the ordinances of the University) shall take the
test based on the compulsory papers of the current post graduate
syllabus of the respective departments. The test shall comprise 100
MCQ type questions. A prospectus for the Ph.D. Entrance Test shall
be available at the University counter on payment of Rs. 1000/- or on
payment through a bank draft drawn in favour of the Registrar,
Punjabi Univeristy, Patiala. The form and the details can also be
downloaded from the University website www.punjabiuniversity.ac.in
(Bank draft for Rs. 1000/- in the name of Registrar, Punjabi
University, Patiala payable at Patiala shall be enclosed with the form
so downloaded). The last date for submission of admission form in
the respective departments will be 18.12.2009.

MODALITIES FOR THE Ph.D ENTRANCE TEST
1. Admission to Ph. D. Programme shall be through Entrance Test. Entrance test
shall be held once each year on the last Sunday of September. In view of
administrative reasons, the test this year shall be held on December 25, 2009
(Friday). The schedule for the Entrance Test shall be notified in the newspapers.
Pass percentage in the test shall be 55% for general and 50% for SC candidates.
The test shall be based on the compulsory papers out of the current post graduate
syllabus of the respective subject. Those whose final result of qualifying
examination is awaited for any reason shall be allowed to appear provisionally.
Such candidates shall have to produce the final result by the time of the
interview.
2. Eligibility Criteria
(as per the Ordinances of the University)
A) A candidate seeking enrolment must satisfy the following academic
criteria:
(i) Masters degree in the concerned/allied subject (as determined by the
Departmental Research Board) with 55% marks at Masters Degree and
50% marks at Bachelors Degree Level. (SC candidates will get 5%
relaxation in post graduation Marks, as per rules).
OR
(ii) M.Phil./M.Litt. Degree with B+ or equivalent.
OR
(iii) In case of Defence Personnel who have obtained Masters Degree on
the basis of staff-college, registration will be allowed if the candidate has
obtained at least 60% marks in the Master's Degree.
OR
(iv) Candidates who have passed C.A./I.C.W.A./Company Secretary
Examinations are eligible for getting registered for Ph.D. Degree.
OR
(v) All whole time teachers either of recognised private colleges or of Govt.
Colleges who are serving within the jurisdiction of Punjabi University,
Patiala with five years teaching experience are eligible for getting
registered for Ph.D. Degree.
3. The Entrance Test examination shall comprise 100 Multiple Choice Questions
(MCQ type). The result shall be declared by the concerned department within 10
days. The qualified candidates shall appear in the interview for assessment of
their research aptitude (date of interview to be notified by the respective
department). The candidates cleared by the department shall be eligible for
enrolment. The result of the Entrance Test shall be valid for one year only.
In order to get enrolment, the qualified candidate shall have to choose
supervisor of his/her specialization subject to availability. For further
information, the candidates are required to consult head of the Department.
4. (a) Those already enrolled with the departments shall have the option to appear in the
Entrance Test and be eligible according to the new Ph.D. guidelines of UGC
(Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degree 2009). In
such cases old enrolment shall stand cancelled.
(b) Such candidates, who are or have been awarded Ph.D. degree in compliance of
the "University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for
Award of Ph.D. Degree), Regulation 2009, shall be exempted from the
requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET for recruitment
and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in
Universities/Colleges/Institutions."
5. Those candidates already enrolled before 30.10.2009, shall have the option of
fulfilling the course work requirement as stipulated in the UGC guidelines
mentioned above. However those opting out of the stipulations and not doing
course work shall do so at their own risk.
6. Those who have qualified the UGC/CSIR/NET/NET(JRF)/SLET/ GATE/Teacher
Fellowship shall be exempted from the Entrance Test. They shall however have
to attend and complete one semester Course work in Research methodology and
recent developments/literatures in the subject concerned.

7. The candidates who have qualified M.Phil. shall be exempted from both Entrance
Test and Course work. They will however have to appear in the interview for
assessment of their research aptitude by applying to the concerned department on
a plain paper after paying fee of Rs.1000/-.
8. Keeping in view the new guidelines of UGC the following number of candidates
can be registered with one supervisor at a given time.
Professor - 8
Associate Professor/Reader - 7
Assistant Professor/Lecturer - 5
9. In addition to the above, the ordinances of the University in respect of Ph.D.
Programme shall apply. Condition regarding qualifying of Punjabi Examination
shall also be compulsory as per ordinances.
10. The Candidate shall be allowed to apply for Entrance Test only in one subject.
11. The fee structure shall be as follows (for candidates entering the Ph.D.
Programme after 30.10.2009):
