ith only a few weeks to

go before 2015 comes to
an end, we are evaluating the
past while making plans for another 12-months.
This is indeed a period of
self-evaluation, reflections and
the making of our New Years
resolutions.
The economy of New York
City continues to be the largest
regional economy in the United
States. The financial, insurance,
health care, and real estate industries form the basis of New
York's economy.
In October 2015, New
York states private sector job
count increased by 30,300, or
0.4 percent, to 7,859,000, a new
record high, according to preliminary figures released Dec.
15 by the New York State Department of Labor.

Statewide unemployment
rate decreased from 5.1 percent
to 4.8 percent in October 2015,
reaching its lowest level since
November 2007 and falling
below the national unemployment rate.
While we have experienced some challenges during
2015, several New York City
small businesses have been reporting improved performances
in sales and operations.
Restaurants, beauty salons,
nightclubs, supermarkets and
other retail outlets are reporting
moderate, but encouraging
signs of progress.
We are also very proud of
the performance of Street Hype
during the past year as our advertising and circulation continue to grow in keeping with
the demand for the paper.

patrick@streethype.net

The support of our advertisers and readers has been

tremendous. We will continue
to carry the toughest news on
legal and political matters. We
reflected and highlighted the
news and views of ordinary
people.

However, there is always

room for improvement as we
seek to grow our business and
to take care of ourselves. This is
the time to dump those customers and friends who are always negative and never
contribute anything to make
your life or your business better.
On a final note, in keeping
with New Year's resolutions,
let us focus on a few issues that
would require our personal attention and discipline. For example, manage your weight,
stop smoking, eat right and exercise frequently. These could
be among the most important
steps to a happier and healthier
you in 2016!
We wish all our readers,
advertisers and friends a merry
Christmas and prosperous New
Year.

Speaker Mark-Viverito Cant

Teach Trump American Values

ou should know that

Melissa Mark-Viverito,
the Speaker of the New York
City Council, recently had an
interfaith press conference on
the Steps of City Hall with
clergy from many religious denominations to condemn Mr.
Donald Trumps statement:
calling for a total and complete
shutdown of Muslims entering
the United States until our
country's representatives can
figure out what is going on.
While I do believe that Mr.
Trump has greatly offended
many people who are Muslim,
and he made many people who
share his sentiment very happy:
thats Donald Trump.
Mr. Donald Trump knows
that unlike people in other
countries, he has the freedom to
say exactly what he wants to
say. We know that there are
people who support what he has
to say, and we know that there
are also people hate to hear

what he has to say. One thing all

have to agree upon is that he
has the right, here in the United
States of America, to say whats
on his mind.
It is important for you to
know that Melissa Mark-Viverito got very angry about Mr.
Donald Trumps statement, and
she is having a press conference
attempting to teach Mr. Donald
Trump American values. She
claims that his words fly directly in the face of everything
that we stand for.
It is even more important
for you to know that even
though Mark-Viverito has the

right to express her anger very

publicly against what Mr. DonTrump, her hatred of the United
States of America has been one
of her strongest qualities.
We all know that MarkViverito refused to honor the
American Flag during a 9-11
Anniversary Ceremony where
we were honoring the fallen

victims of that terrorist attack.

Everyone else honored the
American Flag by placing their
hands over their hearts while
the National Anthem was heard.
It is also well known and
well documented that MarkViverito is an Independentista,
who professes her rejection of
the United States of Americas
presence in Puerto Rico.
Ladies and gentlemen, to
me it is very hypocritical for
someone who doesnt even
honor the American flag to try
to teach Mr. Donald Trump
about American values.
I am Senator Reverend
Rubn Daz, and this is what
you should know.

War of Words in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON:
he mudslinging continues in Mount
Vernon, as local elected officials continue a war on words over mayoral appointments
Last week, Mayor Elect Richard
Thomas, who overwhelmingly won election last month, called for the resignation
of more than 30 employees in City Hall
who were appointed by embattled outgoing
Mayor Ernest Davis.
According to a letter sent to department heads throughout City Hall, Thomas
stated that every department under the jurisdiction of a mayoral appointee will be
fully evaluated and recommendations will
be made as to how that department should
function on a go forward basis.
Additionally, Thomas has requested
that each of Davis department heads and
appointees tender their resignation effective
on Jan. 1, when he takes office, noting that
if any appointee does not submit the letter
of resignation, it will be assumed that said
appointee is no longer interested in filling
the duties of (that) office.
In response, Davis issued a letter of his
own to Thomas that has since been made
public, noting the mayor elects political inexperience and warning him not to address
City Hall employees until he officially
takes office.
You should be aware, if youre going
to be successful, that there should be a continuum of services as you formulate your
government, he said. I would advise you
to cease any correspondence to appointed
staff until you get a grasp on the administration of this office.

It calls for punishing drivers who fail

The board also voted to adopt updated due process procedures and policies for vehicle owners to challenge or

The MTA bridges are the Robert F.

Bronx Pastor Fired

t was not the word embattled

Bronx pastor Ivan Plummer was
looking to receive. Instead, the word
the pastor of the Emmanuel Seventh
Day Church Ministries received last
month was one accompanied by a pink
slip.

With the blessing of an order from the

Bronx Supreme Court, the churchs Board
of Trustees voted last month to fire Plummer because of a slew of alleged improprieties, including misappropriating and
embezzling church funds.
It was the latest move in an ugly battle
for control of the 120-member church, located at 3301 Laconia Ave.
In a letter obtained by Street Hype, the
new chairman Board of Trustees, Everton
Forsythe, explains that the board at a duly
called meeting on Nov. 8, voted unanimously to terminate Plummers leadership, effective Dec. 31.
The letter explains that Plummer must
also legally hand over keys, all church

properties and remove his personal belonging by the end of the year.
The fiery pastor, reached by Street
Hype last week, decided to stay mum.

The leadership battle for the church

erupted on April 7, 2011 when Plummer
was first fired by the board, which accused
him of misappropriating church resources
and failing to keep proper records.
But Plummer pushed back. In an attempt to maintain power of the church,
Plummer dismissed the original board and
appointed new trustees and directors. However, Supreme Court Judge Allison Y. Tuitt
deemed his action illegal and ruled that
the original board be re-instated.
In 2013, the Bronx Supreme Court intervened in the ongoing financial dispute
between the Board of Trustees and Pastor
Plummer. According to court documents
obtained by Street Hype, the board and the
members of the congregation alleged that
Plummer, with the help of other church officers, misappropriated and embezzled
church funds and had taken over sole control of all church assets.
Mary Thompson, Eulalee Brown,
Lavendora Welch and Chairman Forsythe,
comprises the recently established Board of
Trustees of Emmanuel ministries, which
was established in 1997.

Panama disease threatens

Caribbean banana production

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados:
he United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) has urged banana
farmers in the Caribbean to take a proactive
approach against the deadly Panama disease.
According to officials in the sector, the
fungal disease could spell trouble for food
production.
The FAO, in issuing the warning, says
the disease could wipe out the sector and
poses the biggest threat to the regions bananas since the Black Sigatoka disease in
1991.
St Lucias agriculture minister says for
the small islands of the Caribbean, the best response includes collaboration and the adoption of pre-emptive measures.
This is not a threat only that Saint Lucia
is concerned about, so therefore at the regional
level, the governments, through the ministries
of agriculture, are discussing, first of all to see
how best we keep this disease out of our islands, said Moses Jn Baptiste.

According to the
FAO, banana is
the eighth most
important
food
crop in the world
and the fourth
most important
food crop among
the worlds least-developed countries, including the Caribbean.
The FAO says the Panama disease is posing a serious threat to production and export
of the fruit with grave repercussions for the
banana value chain and livelihoods.
The disease is soil-borne and the fungus
can remain viable for decades.
Once the disease is present in a field, the
FAO said it cannot be fully controlled by currently available practices and fungicides.
It said the best way to fight the disease is
to prevent its spread, which includes avoiding
movement of diseased plant materials and infected soil particles

Caribbean Islands among

of most murderous countries
J
Kingston, Jamaica:
amaica is down to seven on the most-murderous countries list, according to statistics
provided by the United Nations Office on
Drugs and Crime, which noted the island's
once-recurrent presence in the top five.
The data further revealed, that almost
half a million people from countries in Central and South America lose their lives each
year due to intentional homicide. Intentional
homicide, according to the UN, is defined as
unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a
person by another person.
Honduras and Venezuela continue to rank as
the top two most murderous nations on the
world, with over one in 1,000 being killed
each year.
However, the biggest surprise was the introduction of Caribbean neighbours St Kitts
and Nevis, and the rise of the United States
Virgin Islands to the top three in the world.
Here's a list of top 10 most-murderous
countries in the world for 2015:
1. Honduras: 90.4 homicides per 100,000
2. Venezuela: 53.7 homicides per 100,000
3. United States Virgin Islands: 52.6 violentdeaths per 100,000
4. Belize: 44.7 homicides per 100,000
5. El Salvador: 41.2 murders per 100,000
6. Guatemala: 39.9 homicides per 100,000

7. Jamaica: 39.3 murders per 100,000

8. Lesotho (In southern Africa): 38 homicides
per 100,000
9. Swaziland: 33.8 homicides per 100,000
10. St Kitts and Nevis: 33.6 homicides per
100,000
On the other hand, several developed
countries in Europe and Asia have the lowest
homicide rates - with Liechtenstein, Singapore and Iceland having homicide rates of
lower than 0.3 per 100,000.
The UN's list further ranked Basseterre,
the capital of St Kitts, at the top of the list of
cities - with 131.6 homicides per 100,000
people.
Capital city Kingston falls in at number
ten in the list of most murderous cities.
Here's the full list from first to tenth place:
Basseterre (St Kitts), Caracas (Venezuela),
Guatemala City (Guatemala), Belize City
(Belize), Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Maseru
(Lesotho), Cape Town (South Africa),
Panama City (Panama), San Salvador (El Salvador) and Kingston (Jamaica).
Jamaica's fall in the global rankings was
seen as a welcomed improvement as the island continues a downward trend in criminal
activity. The island bettered its sixth place
rank achieved in 2014.

Gambia declared Islamic republic

by President Yahya Jammeh

ambian President Yahya Jammeh has declared his Muslim-majority country an Islamic republic, saying the move marks a break
with the colonial past.
Mr Jammeh told state TV the proclamation was in line with Gambia's "religious identity and values".
He added that no dress code would be imposed
and citizens of other faiths would be allowed to
practise freely.
Some 90% of Gambians are Muslim. The
former British colony's economy relies heavily
on tourism. However, relations with the West
have soured recently.

The European Union temporarily withheld

aid money to Gambia last year over its poor
human rights record.
Mr Jammeh has been president of the tiny
West African country for 21 years.
"As Muslims are the majority in the country,
the Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial legacy," Mr Jammeh told state TV, explaining his decision to proclaim an Islamic republic.
Other Islamic republics include Iran, Pakistan and - in Africa, Mauritania. Jammeh withdrew Gambia from the Commonwealth in
2013, describing the organisation as neo-colonial.

St. Kitts and Nevis

Suspends Syrians
Investors

WASHINGTON, DC During a Washington reception on December

3, the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis announced the suspension of Syrians from attaining dual nationality via the islands' citizenship
by investment program. Exclusion for second
citizenship eligibility will hold, the Prime Minister noted, until further federal vetting
processes can be completed.
The statement, first issued in St. Kitts and
Nevis last week, comes in the wake of ongoing
reports of counterfeit Syrian passports flooding
the international black market. St. Kitts and
Nevis's exclusion additionally follows the government's recall in 2013, barring Iranian citizens from its program due to security concerns.
"As the pioneer country in developing a second
citizenship by investment program, we are
proud that St. Kitts and Nevis established a
standard for the highest due diligence in processing applicants, while developing an integral investment platform, Prime Minister
Timothy Harris said.

world number one every week for the second
successive year and took her total of grand
slams to 21, one less than Steffi Graf for most
in the Open Era, at an age when most players
have been long retired.
I've been doing what I do for over 20
years professionally and that's a long time to
be playing," Williams told Reuters before
Tuesday's awards dinner. "And this is the first
time I was ever recognized as Sportsperson
of the Year.
"So it really, really meant a lot to me.
And being a woman and being only the third
to be recognized is pretty awesome."

Williams said that joining gymnast Mary

Lou Retton and speed skater Bonnie Blair on
the list of women to claim the award motivated her to succeed on court next year and
target even more milestones.
"There's numbers," she said at the
awards dinner, referencing Graf's 22 slams
and the 24 singles titles won by all-time
leader Margaret Court of Australia.
"I never looked at numbers until recently. I want to at least try to reach a couple
of numbers that I won't mention. Just go one
at a time and hopefully will be there one day."
Williams won out over such strong contenders as NBA star Stephen Curry, golfer
Jordan Spieth and racehorse American
Pharoah, the first to win the U.S. Triple
Crown in 37 years, who won the magazine's
readers poll for the award.
Her Sportsperson cover photo for the
magazine, picturing her in a black leotard and
high heels lounging on a golden throne, also
generated a lot of buzz as well as delighting
Williams.
"The cover I thought was really amazing," she said. "You can never be too hot."

Samuels ban from international bowling

est Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels has been

banned from bowling in international cricket for
12 months following an independent assessment of his
action, which took place at the ICCs accredited testing
centre in Brisbane earlier this month.
The 34 year-old was assessed after the legality of
his bowling action came under question by the match
officials during West Indies first test defeat against Sri
Lanka in Galle in October.
The assessment revealed that Samuels elbow extension exceeded 15 degrees while bowling and, thus,
he employed an illegal bowling action. Samuels was
originally suspended from bowling his faster deliveries in international cricket in December 2013.

Jamaican Recording Artist Convicted on drug charges

J

TRENTON:
amaican-born dancehall DJ Andrew
Flippa Mafia K. Davis, 37, formerly of
Swedesboro, N.J., was found guilty on
Thursday by a Camden County jury of firstdegree distribution of cocaine, second-degree money laundering, and second-degree
conspiracy.
The first-degree charge carries a sentence of 10 to 20 years in state prison, while
the second-degree charges carry a sentence
of five to 10 years in prison. The jury verdict followed a seven-week trial before Superior Court Judge John T. Kelley in
Camden, N.J. The jury could not reach a
unanimous verdict on the first-degree
charge of leading a narcotics trafficking
network.
Davis co-defendant in the trial, Marsha G. Bernard, 34, of Cherry Hill, N.J.,
also was convicted of first-degree distribution of cocaine, second-degree money laundering, and second-degree conspiracy.
Bernard received large shipments of cocaine in New Jersey and distributed them to
other drug traffickers under the direction of
Davis and two of his brothers who previously pleaded guilty in this case, Kemar
Davis and Roger Davis.
The charges are the result of Operation Next Day Air, a multi-agency investigation led by the New Jersey State Police,

Andrew Flippa Mafia K. Davis, 37

the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration

(DEA) and the Division of Criminal Justice. In the course of the investigation, detectives recovered more than 26 kilograms
of cocaine, worth more than $960,000, two
handguns, and more than $500,000 in cash.
On Sept. 14, 2015, Kemar Davis, 25,
of Hollywood, Calif., who ran the ring with
his brother Andrew, pleaded guilty to leading a narcotics trafficking network before
Judge Kelley. Under his plea agreement, the
state will recommend that Kemar Davis be
sentenced to 20 years in state prison, with
a 12-year period of parole ineligibility. An-

Marsha G. Bernard

other brother, Roger Davis, 37, of Roslyn,

Pa., pleaded guilty on Sept. 14 to first-degree possession of cocaine with intent to
distribute. The state will recommend that
Roger Davis be sentenced to 10 years in
state prison, with three years of parole ineligibility.
Six other defendants in Operation Next
Day Air were sentenced previously: James
C. McBride, 42, of Mount Laurel, was sentenced on Nov. 21, 2014 to 16 years in state
prison, including eight years of parole ineligibility. He pleaded guilty to first-degree
possession of cocaine with intent to distrib-

ute. McBride was arrested on March 15,

2013 outside the Cherry Hill Mall after taking delivery of three kilos of cocaine from
co-defendant Sidonie McLeod.
Angel R. Rivera, 35, of Vineland, N.J.,
was sentenced on June 12, 2015, to 10
years in state prison, with a 3 year period
of parole ineligibility, after pleading guilty
to first-degree possession of cocaine with
intent to distribute.
Juan M. Cortez, 43, of Vineland, N.J.,
was sentenced on July 31 to eight years in
state prison, with a two-year period of parole ineligibility, after pleading guilty to
first-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Cortez and Rivera were
arrested on March 11, 2013 at the Cherry
Hill Mall after taking delivery of a kilo of
cocaine from Bernard.
Sidonie McLeod, 30, of Cherry Hill,
was sentenced to five years in state prison
on Jan. 16 after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge.

Five Holiday Saving Tips

HOLIDAY CHRISTMAS FEATURE

he ultimate gift during the holidays

is the gift of love. We demonstrate
this by spending quality time with
loved ones, sharing an extra special
meal, catching up on accomplishments
of the past year and sharing our excitement of things to come.

Sometimes the overwhelming love and

generosity we feel during the holidays,
make us forget to manage our spending
habits. Here are a few of my favorite tips to
enjoy the spirit of the Holidays without
breaking the bank.

1. Make a Budget - There are a couple different ways to set a holiday budget. You
might want to establish a general spending
cap, or try allocating a specific amount to
each person on your gift list. And remember
to track your spending, your budget does no
good if you dont effectively track your
spending.
2. Shop Online - Shopping online can save
you money and the headache of dealing
with holiday crowds. It makes it easy to
comparison shop so you can ensure youre
getting the best deal available. A variety of
retailers offer amazing deals on electronics,
clothing, and more, meaning your Christmas shopping can be done without leaving
your couch.

5. Dont Dig Yourself a Credit Hole- If

you are going to use your credit cards for
holiday gifts and the like, be careful you
dont dig yourself into a pit of debt. While
the allure of points and miles from frequent
credit card use can be tempting, make sure
you only spend what youll be able to pay
back right away. Otherwise, youll start off
the New Year up to your ears in bills that
you cant afford. The holiday season
doesnt have to mean a huge loss of money.

By sticking to a budget and following better

holiday spending habits, you can enjoy the
festive season and come out on the other
side without debt.

3. Use Coupons - Coupons can save you a

lot of money so dont underestimate them.
Loads of coupons and Promo Codes are
available for grabs in December so you can
significantly cut your spending! However,
its important to remember that quantities
are limited to dont think for too long and
get the ones you need.

4. Be Secret Santas - Whether at the office

or in the family, using secret Santas to give
to large groups of people are a great way to
participate in the holiday spirit without
costing too much to any one person. Plus,
the element of surprise and mystery behind
who your secret Santa is adds a whole new
level of wonderment to the process.

Dont Fall Victim to Financial

Distress Caused by Credit Card Debt
Credit counseling is the easiest, most effective way to explore the options for
credit card debt and identify the best solution for your needs.

HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD

PAYMENTS combined with even
higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control
over your credit card debt. Even with
your monthly payments you may not
see much of a reduction in debt no
matter what you do.
Whats more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses,
and putting off important purchases.
Luckily, theres a way you can find the
solution that works for your unique financial situation and even better, it
wont cost a thing to get the information you need.

CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE

EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY
TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS
FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND
IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION
FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a
certified credit counselor at no charge
to analyze your debt and budget. They
will review your options to see what
solutions may work best for you. Your
credit counselor may be able to lower
high interest rates or even eliminate
them while consolidating your credit
card debts into one easy payment
through a debt management program.
Get Out of Debt Faster
As a result of those lower interest
rates more of your monthly pay-

ments go toward your debt instead of

adding more interest which means
you can get out of debt faster. Every
financial situation is different, but
most people see their total monthly
debt payments reduced by up to 30
to 50 percent as they get out of debt
faster. The program is usually completed in around 40-60 payments,
so you can be debt-free in just a few
years instead of taking decades to
eliminate everything you owe.

Its the fastest and easiest to

get professional financial
advice without incurring
another bill to do it.
Build a Positive Credit History
Additionally, consolidating debtthrough a certified credit counseling
service may help save your credit score
from additional damage. You stop future penalties and prevent further damage from missed payments and overdrawn credit lines. Even better, as you
work your way through the program,

youre able to build a positive credit history while reducing your overall
debt level. As a result, some people see
their credit score even increase over the
course of their time with a credit counseling service.
FREEDOM
FROM
DEBT
IS
POSSIBLE! Dont spend another
sleepless night worrying about your
debt problems, or another day stressed
about your bills instead of focused on
your family and life.

Call Consolidated Credit now at

1-800-721-4370

counselor today.

BEAUTY CARE

16 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER DEC 19-31, 2015

Taking care of
your natural hair

he winter air can be particularly drying.

In the winter months, many naturals
struggle with retaining moisture and preventing breakage.
With a demanding schedule work,
school, family keeping natural hair healthy
during the winter months can be even more
daunting. But just because you are busy, does
not mean you have to fall victim to winter
breakage. Here are some tips for winter care,
even a busy natural can use-1. Use a milder shampoo. If youre not
already using sulfate-free shampoo, then you
may want to make the switch during the winter months. If youre still having issues with
dryness, consider adding cleansing co-washes
to your hair regimen. They are even milder
than sulfate-free shampoos, especially if they
are non-sudsing kind.
2. Deep condition for 20-30 minutes.
Too often, busy naturals forego deep conditioning because they dont have enough
time. But all you need is 20-30 minutes and
even less time with Aphogee Intensive 2Minute Keratin Reconstructor. You dont
need to condition overnight or an all day conditioning session. 20-30 minutespreferably
with heat will suffice. If you buy a product
like the Hair Therapy wrap, you can condition
your hair while completing your house
chores.
3. Wash your hair less often. Are you
using a milder shampoo and deep conditioning, but still experiencing dry hair? Then try
washing your hair less often. If youre shampooing twice a week, try once a week, but no
less than bi-weekly.

4. Pre-poo before you wash your hair.

To protect your hair from the drying wash
process, pre-poo your hair with your favorite
oil and/or conditioner. A coconut oil pre-poo
is the best and prevent damage during your
shampoo session.
5. Invest in a good deep conditioner. If
youre attempting to deep condition your hair
with a washout conditioner, then you are
wasting your time. When searching for a deep
conditioner, look for the words treatment or
masque. Read more on the effectiveness of
deep conditioning.
6. Steam your hair. The key to moisture
is water. During winter months, the dry, winter air (with no humidity) leaves our strands
thirsty. To avoid saturating your hair on a regular basis, try steaming your hair. You dont
even have to sit under a steamer. You can simply steam your hair while taking your shower
just forget about that shower cap.
7. Wear a hat (with silk lining or silk
cap). Protect your hair from the cold, winter
hair by wearing a hat. Just make sure that you
either line with silk or wear a silk cap when
wearing wool or cotton hats.
8. Trim your ends. The dry, winter air
can result in dry, brittle hair. Make sure that
your ends are healthy by trimming away any
split ends

Large Breast's
Implants

18 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER DEC 19-31, 2015

BY DIVINE DIVA

divinestreethype@gmail.com

Dear Divine Diva:

efore we met, my girlfriend got large breast implants.
I think they're a terrible turn-off, but I don't know
how to tell her. Should I try to overlook this because I love
her, or can I tell her the truth about why our love life is
sometimes not so hot? I have known her long enough that
the next step is marriage -- or nothing.
She walks around the house bare-chested and obviously thinks I find her breasts a big turn-on. I have faked
it for five years. What should I do? - Pat, Brooklyn
Dear Pat:

Your letter is a lesson about the danger of "faking it."

Level with your girlfriend, but without using the words
"terrible" and "turn-off." Tell her you love her, but while
many men find large breasts to be a turn-on, you actually
prefer smaller ones -- to the degree that it sometimes affects your sexual performance.
Explain that if she thinks her breasts are what have
kept you interested, it's not the case. At some point, one
or more of her implants may need to be replaced, and she
might opt for smaller ones. - Divine Diva

How can I change

barbers without causing
hurt feelings?

Dear Divine Diva:

have had the same barber for several years and he is
a good friend. While he was on vacation, I used another barber in the shop for a cut. I really like how he
cut my hair. How can I change barbers without causing
hurt feelings? --John P
Dear John:
Barbers are human like everyone else. If you announce
that you want to make a change, there probably will be
hurt feelings. The question you must ask yourself is, is
your relationship with your barber/friend such a close
one that you're willing to tolerate continuing to patronize him even though you think someone else can do a
better job. (Now that's friendship!) -Divine Diva

our body needs less than one gram of

sodium a day. That's under half a teaspoon of table salt.
But if you are like most Americans,
you consume up to four times that amount.
The result? Increased risk of high
blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
As for added sugar, most of us consume more than twice the recommended
daily amount, increasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and even depression.

In Reducing Sugar and Salt, the doctors at Harvard Medical School give you
the know-how to successfully monitor and
effectively control the amount of sugar and
salt you and your family take in each day.
The report exposes dozens of foods
with "hidden" sodium and sugar. For example, a tuna salad sub sandwich can have
up to 1,300 milligrams of sodium more
than the daily recommendation while a
bowl of raisin bran delivers 19 grams of

Reducing Sugar and Salt will give you
the facts about how a high-sodium diet can
lower bone density, why "lactose-free"
does not mean ''sugar-free,'' and whether
you're wasting your money on sports
drinks when water will do. It also brings
you up to date on sugar substitutes, and
why you might want to cut back on diet
soda.

Reducing Sugar and Salt also gives
you a host of flavorful recipes that minimize or eliminate sugar and salt, from delectable breakfast treats to wholesome
lunches and dinners, not to mention perfect-ending desserts and even late-night
snacks.
Be good to your body and yourself.

Bedford Union Armory to benefit local community

BROOKLYN:
rooklyn Borough President Eric L.
Adams recently joined the New York
City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Bedford Courts
LLC, a joint venture of Brooklyn-based
developers BFC Partners and Slate Property Group, in partnership with local
elected officials and community leaders,
to announce an approximately 500,000
square foot mixed-use development at the
Bedford Union Armory, bringing hundreds of units of housing, a multi-sport
recreational facility, community event
space, office space and commercial space
to Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Devised in
close coordination with the community

and local elected officials, the Bedford

Union Armory project will activate the
vacant building, built in 1903, in one of
the most diverse neighborhoods in New
York City, and achieve a double bottom
line by providing access to facilities,
space for lease, and programming at significant discounts.
Activating the Bedford Union Armory has been a labor of love, a truly
community-driven process where the residents of Crown Heights have ensured
their voices were heard, said Borough
President Adams. Thanks to the thoughtful input of engaged Brooklynites, we can
proceed with a plan that adds tremendous
value to a growing neighborhood. In ad-

dition to generating scores of criticallyneeded affordable housing units in the

heart of Central Brooklyn, the Bedford
Union Armory will serve as an economic
engine of opportunity as well as a beacon
for the advancement of healthy living. I
applaud the partnership between local
stakeholders and NYCEDC that has fostered a quality vision that enhances the
future of Crown Heights and Brooklyn as
a whole. The Bedford Union Armory
has been a centerpiece of the Crown
Heights community for more than a century, and by reactivating it, we are building upon its potential to benefit the entire
neighborhood, said NYCEDC President
Maria Torres-Springer.
