Statewide unemployment
rate decreased from 5.1 percent

reaching its lowest level since
November 2007 and falling
below the national unemployment rate.
While we have experienced some challenges during
2015, several New York City
small businesses have been reporting improved performances
in sales and operations.
Restaurants, beauty salons,
nightclubs, supermarkets and
other retail outlets are reporting
moderate, but encouraging
signs of progress.
We are also very proud of
the performance of Street Hype

PRE-THANKSGIVING DINNER:
The men and women of Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club collaborated with Hope City Empowerment Center, which is led by Bradley Backus to help
250 men and women celebrate Thanksgiving in fine style. The Hope City Empowerment Center is a pillar in the Crown Heights Community and has
provided much-needed essential services to thousands of men and women daily. Known throughout the borough as a haven for those who have the
greatest need in the Brooklyn community, Hope City once again lived up to its name providing Hope! This outreach is just one of the many projects
Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club has embraced since its founding. Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club chartered in 2008 meets every 4th Sunday at
Kingsbrook Jewish Hospital at 4:00p.m. Each year Brooklyn Metropolis serves in the community by providing Thanksgiving dinner and distributing
warm coats to persons living in shelter.
MOUNT VERNON:
he mudslinging continues in Mount
Vernon, as local elected officials continue a war on words over mayoral appointments
Last week, Mayor Elect Richard
Thomas, who overwhelmingly won election last month, called for the resignation
of more than 30 employees in City Hall
who were appointed by embattled outgoing
Mayor Ernest Davis.
According to a letter sent to department heads throughout City Hall, Thomas
stated that every department under the jurisdiction of a mayoral appointee will be
fully evaluated and recommendations will
be made as to how that department should
function on a go forward basis.
Additionally, Thomas has requested
that each of Davis department heads and
appointees tender their resignation effective
on Jan. 1, when he takes office, noting that
if any appointee does not submit the letter
of resignation, it will be assumed that said
appointee is no longer interested in filling
the duties of (that) office.
In response, Davis issued a letter of his
own to Thomas that has since been made
public, noting the mayor elects political inexperience and warning him not to address
City Hall employees until he officially
takes office.
You should be aware, if youre going
to be successful, that there should be a continuum of services as you formulate your
government, he said. I would advise you
to cease any correspondence to appointed
staff until you get a grasp on the administration of this office.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados:
he United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) has urged banana
farmers in the Caribbean to take a proactive
approach against the deadly Panama disease.
According to officials in the sector, the
fungal disease could spell trouble for food
production.
The FAO, in issuing the warning, says
the disease could wipe out the sector and
poses the biggest threat to the regions bananas since the Black Sigatoka disease in
1991.
St Lucias agriculture minister says for
the small islands of the Caribbean, the best response includes collaboration and the adoption of pre-emptive measures.
This is not a threat only that Saint Lucia
is concerned about, so therefore at the regional
level, the governments, through the ministries
of agriculture, are discussing, first of all to see
how best we keep this disease out of our islands, said Moses Jn Baptiste.
According to the
FAO, banana is
the eighth most
important
food
crop in the world
and the fourth
most important
food crop among
the worlds least-developed countries, including the Caribbean.
The FAO says the Panama disease is posing a serious threat to production and export
of the fruit with grave repercussions for the
banana value chain and livelihoods.
The disease is soil-borne and the fungus
can remain viable for decades.
Once the disease is present in a field, the
FAO said it cannot be fully controlled by currently available practices and fungicides.
It said the best way to fight the disease is
to prevent its spread, which includes avoiding
movement of diseased plant materials and infected soil particles

NEW YORK:
erena Williams added to one of the
longest resumes in sports by collecting
the Sportsperson of the Year award from
Sports Illustrated, becoming only the third individual woman to claim the honor since its
1956 inception.
Williams, 34, won the first three grand
slam singles titles of 2015 after taking last
year's U.S. Open to hold all four crowns at
once for her second career 'Serena Slam'.
She logged a 53-3 record, reigned as
world number one every week for the second
successive year and took her total of grand
slams to 21, one less than Steffi Graf for most
in the Open Era, at an age when most players
have been long retired.
I've been doing what I do for over 20
years professionally and that's a long time to
be playing," Williams told Reuters before
Tuesday's awards dinner. "And this is the first
time I was ever recognized as Sportsperson
of the Year.
"So it really, really meant a lot to me.
And being a woman and being only the third
to be recognized is pretty awesome."
