THE HISTORY OF TIRTA EMPUL TAMPAK SIRING

Tirta Empul Temple or Tampak Siring Temple is a holy spring water temple
located in Tampak Siring Village, Gianyar regency and it is about 39 km eastwards from
Denpasar town. In the west side of this temple, there is an Indonesian President palace which has
been found by the first president. The name of Tirta Empul is loaded in a inscription which is
kept at Sakenan Temple, Manukaya village, Sub district of Tampak Siring, about 3 km from Tirta
Empul Temple. In this inscription, the Tirta Empul is named by the Tirta Ri Air Hampul and then
the name has changed into Tirta Hampul and finally become the Tirta Empul. Tirta Ri air hampul
is meaning the water emerge or the holy pool (Petirthan) which is the water emerge from the
land.
The wellspring emerges from the land is believed that it is the infinite creation. According
to the history, that, that this water source is arranged and sanctified by king
Indrajayasinghawarmadewa in the year 882 Saka (960 M). He has given the name with Tirta ri
air hampul. The data is loaded in the inscription that is located at Sakenan Temple. Besides of the
above epigraphy data, in Tirta Empul Temple is also found the archaeology omission like
Colossus Yoni, Arca Lion, Tepasana and Tirta Empul Pool. According to papyrus of Usana Bali
narrated that Tirta Empul is created by Bhatara Indra (Sun Deity) when bearing arms against the
king where his palace is located in Bedahulu Countryside. He is known as a very miraculous
king, which he can lose or show suddenly, therefore he is named by Mayadenawa. Because of its
miracle, he becomes the arrogance and expressing himself as a god. The Mayadenawa King
owns the assistant (Patih) which is called Kalawong. They prohibit the people to do the Yadnya
(praying to the god) so that is often happened the natural disaster, disease epidemic, agriculture
fail and finally miserable life society. Finally Betara Indra (one of Hindu God) gives battle
against the kings that happened in Tampak Siring and then the Mayadenawa is gone to the wall
and disappear. King Mayadenawa has also created poisonous pools which can the team of
Bathara Indra die and faint after drinking this water. Then Bathara Indra stick the weapon of
Umbul-umbul and finally the water is emerging so that called by Tirta Empul and then it is
passed to the dead and faint soldier that made them back to live. Therefore at the moment this
pool water is sanctified by the Hindu society in Bali and they believe that this water source can
heal various of diseases, hence every day this place is a lot of visited by Hindu people to do the
ritual and sanctify them self . This place has been opened for public and as a famous tourist
destination in Bali.

THE DESCRIPTION OF TIRTA EMPUL TAMPAK SIRING

Tirta Empul is located in Gianyar regency, it takes 1 hour from Batubulan. In
Tirta Empul there is two entrances, to enter the first entrance the way down to the parking area
usually that for tourist and the second entrance the way up to the parking is for the people who
want to do melukat. Near from the second entrance there are many food vendors. Tirta empul
temple is divided into three main coutryards such as : the outer yard (Jaba Sisi) the midle yard
(Jaba Tengah) and the iner yard (Jeroan) or the holiest park of the temple where the prayer take
place. At the midle courtyard is constructed and first court yars where constructed:
1. Pool with 13 fountains, used as holly water for creamation or dead ceremony.
2. Pool with 8 fountains, used as water for symbolic cleaning ( spiritual purification), when
a person is sick it is believed he is infected by immaterial dirt 3.
3. Pool with 5 fountains for holly water used people from outside come to pray.
In addition to data on the Pura Titha efigrafi Empul aslo found arceological relics such as :
1. Linga Yoni : Being located on the second page (Jaba the center) on an altar, phallus
worship yoni is the symbol of Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati magic to invoke fertility
of agricultural.
2. Lion statue : In Hindu mythology the lion is the vehicle of Goddess Durga in the pursuit
of a giant Raktawija.
3. Tepasana : It is a form of pelingih building was originally just a patio, but the restoration
has been carried out in 1967 AD.
4. Tirta Empul pool : Swimming with a 15x50 meter area is channeled toward the
downstream through several showers that are used as a tirtha in ritual ceremonies.

RECOUNT TEXT

At 16th of December 2012 our group went to Tampak Siring by Idas father car. Dewis
picked Tayas up at Tayas house and went to school by motorcycle together. After Dewi and
Taya arrived at school, they waited for Evy who came 5 minutes later. Three of us went together
to Idas house, it took 25 minutes. Because we didnt know where is Idas house, we decided to
met Ida in Indomaret which was near from Idas house. Before Ida came we bought some snacks
liked two bang-bang max, one regular bang-bang, biscuit Roma, two mineral water, and one
mizone. When we paid what we bought, Ida came. And then we went to Idas house together. On
the way to Idas house the down street was very scary, and made our heart beat so fast. After we
put our helmets we directly went to Tampak Siring with Idas mother, father, Idas young brother
and absolutely the four of us.
On the way to Tampak Siring no one knew the way to there, so we decided to googled
map to went to Tampak Siring. We saw every directions board to made sure that the way we
choosed was true. On Ir. Soekarno street, Tampak Siring we saw so many Penjors. On the left
side there was full of yellow Penjors and on the right side was full of white Penjors. Not too far
from the street that full of penjors, we saw so many Indonesian Flag that fluttered around
President Palace. And finally we arrived in Tirta Empul. We felt so relief that we arrived safely in
Tirta Empul, Thanks God . There were 2 ways to the parking area. We choosed the first way.
The parking attendant said that the parking area was full. We decided to wait until there was a car
came out and we replaced it place.
On the way to entering the Tirta Empul area, there were many food vendors and
heaver that built in that area. After entering the outside area we waited Dewi who prayed in Pura
Jaba Sisi because she is the only one who was Hindu. She told us that she wished to God we
could be success the guiding project. After that we entered Tirta empul area to looked for some
tourists. After we looked around, finally we found the first tourist. The old man with his family.

tourist. While we were just walked around, Taya saw a lovely old couple. Taya and Dewi was
very excited to greeted them. Taya just acted like she saw her old friends, she just too excited.
And Evy was the only one who always stoped us and acted like she was the only one girl in this
world who knew everything. We back and forth 5 times and liked spy that spied in that lovely old

After we took a picture with mrs Clorie and Mr. Bill we said goodbye and said to them
have a nice holiday and merry christmas,. Then we looked for tourist again. We always felt
doubt to spoke with many tourist there. We always thought maybe they busy, or they were
speaking with their friends, they didnt look friendly and that made us didnt feel free to spoke to
them. It started raining , and we decided to had lunch. When we were having lunch there was a
chinese couple who did prawedding photo. They looked very romantic couple and made us a
little bit envy, More over Evy. After having lunch we looked fot the next tourist, but before
meeting him, we went arround the Tirta Empul very long time because when Taya and Dewi
would come to the tourists, Evy always banned them to greet the tourist. That was the annoying
of her. We met two tourists who refused to have some conversation with us. Huuftt.... what a
disappointed, But it was okay because we believed that a bad experience is good teacher. We
back and forth to one place to another and sat down, then up again, and suddenly there were a
bunch of busy little childrens who were offering us some umbrella. One of the children offer us a
umbrella that the price was 10.000 and we bid 3000, but she refused it and finally Taya and Dewi
bid 5000 then the children deal it. After at least 10 minutes we met a tourist who were sitting
alone in the wantilan. We asked him that he were busy, he replied didnt but he said again that his
english were not very good He thought our english was better than him. Then he suggested us to
do the project with his cousin, Pattrick who had just come from the shower. But there was an
problem with dewis mobile phone. The recording program was loading so we repeat again. This

After taking a picture we said good bye and have a good holiday in Bali. Idas father
waited us in the car so we went to the car in a hurry, before we went to Denpasar we didt forget
to took a picture with Idas mother. Then we arrived at our own home at three oclock afternoon.

OUR IMPRESSION
First of all, from the beginning to the end of this project we really grateful to God.
And thank you to Miss Sukma who had an amazing idea to gave us an assignment that we called
it English Project. This project had made us got so many valued lessons and of course experience
too. At first we thought this project will be hard to done based on we have to full 10 pages, but as
we doing this not too serious and we just having fun doing this project. Even though that our
guiding spot Tampak Siring is really far from our house and basically we didnt know where
exactly it is. But the power of spirit and faith to done this project, we went to Tampak Siring with
Idas Family. Of course we thankful to Idas Family that had helped us with brought us to
Tampak Siring by Idas car. Even though, there were some tourists ignore us and made us felt
upset, we never gave up. Even though the weather was not friendly, but again the power of
teenager spirit and faith we kept moved on to find more tourists. Even though when the rain
success stopped us, but we never gave up. When the rain paused us, we enjoyed that time with
rest and ate. Even though the rain never gave up to stopped us, God is always on time helped us
with these kids who sold umbrella. With umbrella that we bought to borrow (because we paid the
umbrella and at last we gave back the umbrella to the kids). After all, we really enjoy this
English Project. This project had improved our English so much and those all the experience that
we had got, we will never forget it. At this last page we want to give spirit to the reader who had
the same project as we. This Project really gave us valued lesson and experience. Dont shy or
fear to greet, say hello and start the conversation with the tourist, we already knew how it felt to
stopped and started the conversation, of course it was our problem too. Make sure yourself and
your group to be brave to greet the tourist and never give up if there are some of the tourists will
ignore you. Memorize the story of the place is a must and improve your vocabularies, because
this is guiding project.
