JOHN

The Word Became Flesh

In the beg inn ing was the Word, and the

Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2He was with God in the beg inn ing.
3Through him all t hings were made; without
him nothi ng was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the l ight of
all man k ind. 5The l ight s hines in the dark
ness, and the darkness has not overcomeait.
6There was a man sent from God w hose
name was John. 7He came as a witness to
test if y concerni ng that l ight, so that t hrough
him all m
ight bel ieve. 8He himself was not
the light; he came only as a witness to the
l ight.
9The true light that g ives light to every
one was comi ng into the world. 10He was in
the w
orld, and t hough the w
orld was made
t hrough him, the w
orld did not recogn ize
hich was his own,
him. 11He came to that w
but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all
who did receive him, to t hose who bel ieved
in his name, he gave the r ight to become
child ren of God 13child ren born not of
natu ral descent, nor of human decision or a
husbands will, but born of God.
14The Word bec ame f lesh and made his
dwelli ng a mong us. We have seen his glor y,
the glor y of the one and only Son, who came
from the Fat her, full of g race and truth.
15(John test i f ied conc ern i ng him. He
c ried out, saying, This is the one I spoke
about when I said, He who c omes after me
has surpassed me bec ause he was before
me.) 16Out of his fullness we have all re
ceived g race in place of g race already giv
en. 17For the law was given t hrough Moses;
g race and t ruth came t hrough Jesus Christ.
18No one has ever seen God, but the one and
only Son, who is himself God andb is in clos
est relat ionship with the Fat her, has made
him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being

theMessiah
19Now this was J ohns test imony when the
Jewish leaders c in Jer usalem sent priests and
Lev ites to ask him who he was. 20He did not
fail to confess, but confessed freely, I am not
the Messia h.
21They a sked him, Then who are you?
Are you Elijah?
He said, I am not.
Are you the Prophet?
He answered,No.
22Finally they said, Who are you? Give us
an answer to take back to t hose who sent us.
What do you say a bout yourself?
23John replied in the words of Isaiah the
prophet, I am the voice of one calli ng in the
wilderness, Make straight the way for the
Lord.d
24Now the Pharis ees who had been sent
25quest ioned him, Why then do you bapt ize
if you are not the Messia h, nor Elijah, nor the
Prophet?
26I bap
t ize withe water, John replied,
but a mong you s tands one you do not know.
27He is the one who c
omes after me, the
straps of w
hose sandals I am not wort hy to
unt ie.
28This all hap
pened at Betha ny on the
other side of the Jordan, w
here John was
bapt izi ng.

John Testifies About Jesus

29The next day John saw Jesus comi ng to
ward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God,
who takes away the sin of the world! 30This
is the one I m
eant when I said, A man who
comes after me has surpassed me because he
was before me. 31I myself did not know him,
but the reason I came bapt izi ng with water
was that he m
ight be revealed to Israel.
32Then John gave this test imony: I saw

know him, but the one who sent me to bap

Gods Chosen One. a

Johns Disciples Follow Jesus

35The next day John was t here a
gain with
two of his disc iples. 36When he saw Jesus
passing by, he said, Look, the Lamb of God!
37When the two disc iples heard him say
this, they followed J esus. 38Turni ng a round,
Jesus saw them followi ng and a sked, What
do you want?
They said, Rabbi (which means Teach
er), where are you stayi ng?
39Come, he replied, and you will see.
So they went and saw where he was stay
ing, and they s pent that day with him. It was
about four in the afternoon.
40And rew, Simon Peters brother, was one
of the two who h
eard what John had said and
who had followed Jesus. 41The f irst t hing
And rew did was to find his brother Simon
and tell him, We have found the Messia h
rought him to
(that is, the C
hrist). 42And he b
Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, You are Si
mon son of John. You will be called Cephas
(which, when translated, is Peterb).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43The next day J esus dec ided to leave for
Gali lee. Findi ng Philip, he said to him, Fol
lowme.
44Phil
ip, like And rew and Peter, was
from the town of Bethsaida. 45Phil ip found
Nathanael and told him, We have found
the one Moses w rote a bout in the Law, and
about whom the prophets also w rote Jesus
of Naza reth, the son of Joseph.
46Naz
a reth! Can anything good come
from t here? Nat hanael asked.
Come and see, said Philip.
47When Jesus saw Nat hanael approach
ing, he said of him, Here truly is an Israelite
in whom t here is no deceit.

John 2:12

1076

48How do you know me? Na

t hanael
asked.
Jesus answered, I saw you while you were
still under the fig tree before Philip c alled
you.
49Then Nat hanael dec lared, Rabbi, you
are the Son of God; you are the king of Isra
el.
50Jesus said, You bel ievec bec ause I told
you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see
greater t hings than that. 51He then added,
Very truly I tell you,d youd will see heaven
open, and the angels of God ascendi ng and
descendi ng on e the Son of Man.

Jesus Changes Water IntoWine

On the t hird day a wedd ing took p

lace
at Cana in Galilee. Jesus mother was
t here, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also
been inv ite d to the wedd ing. 3When the
wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him,
They have no more wine.
4Woma n, f why do you involve me? J esus
replied. My hour has not yet come.
5His moth
er said to the serv ants, Do
whatever he tells you.
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind
used by the Jews for ceremon ia l washing,
each holding from twent y to thirt y gallons.g
7Jesus said to the serv ants, Fill the jars
with water; so they f illed them to the brim.
8Then he told them, Now draw some out
and take it to the master of the banquet.
They did so, 9and the master of the ban
quet tasted the water that had been t urned
into wine. He did not rea lize w here it had
come from, though the serv ants who had
d rawn the water knew. Then he c alled the
brideg room a side 10and said, Everyone
brings out the choice wine f irst and then the
cheaper wine after the g uests have had too
much to d
rink; but you have s aved the best
till now.
11What Jesus did here in Cana of Gali lee
was the f irst of the signs t hrough which he
revealed his glor y; and his disciples bel ieved
in him.
12After this he went down to Capernau m
with his mother and brothers and his disci
ples. T
here they s tayed for a few days.

John 2:13

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts

13When

it was almost time for the Jewish

Passover, Jesus went up to Jer usa lem. 14In
the temple courts he found people selling
catt le, sheep and doves, and others sitt ing
at tables exchang i ng mone y. 15So he made
a whip out of cords, and d
rove all from the
temple c ourts, both s heep and cattle; he
scattered the coins of the mone y changers
and overt urned t heir tables. 16To t hose who
sold doves he said, Get t hese out of here!
Stop turni ng my Fat hers h
ouse into a mar
ket! 17His disc iples remembered that it is
written: Zeal for your house will consume
me.a
18The Jews then responded to him, What
sign can you show us to prove your aut horit y
to do all this?
19Jesus an
s wered them, Destroy this
temple, and I will raise it again in three
days.
20They re
plied, It has taken forty-six
years to b
uild this temple, and you are go
ing to raise it in t hree days? 21But the tem
ple he had spoken of was his body. 22After he
was r aised from the dead, his disc iples re
called what he had said. Then they bel ieved
the script ure and the w
ords that J esus had
spoken.
23Now w hile he was in Jer us alem at the
Passover Festiv al, many people saw the
signs he was performi ng and bel ieved in his
name.b 24But Jesus would not ent rust him
self to them, for he knew all people. 25He did
not need any test imony about mank ind, for
he knew what was in each person.

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

Now t here was a Pharisee, a man named

Nicodemus who was a member of the
Jew ish rul i ng council. 2He came to J esus at
n ight and said, Rabbi, we know that you are
a teacher who has come from God. For no
one c ould perform the s igns you are doi ng if
God were not with him.
3Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no
one can see the kingdom of God unless they
are born again.c
4How can someone be born when they

John 3:22

1077

are old? Nicodemus a sked. Surel y they

cannot enter a second time into t heir moth
ers womb to be born!
5Jesus ans wered, Very truly I tell you, no
one can enter the kingdom of God unless
they are born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh
g ives birth to f lesh, but the Spiritd g ives birth
to spir it. 7You should not be surprised at
my sayi ng, Youe must be born again. 8The
wind b
lows wherever it pleases. You hear its
sound, but you cannot tell w here it comes
from or where it is goi ng. So it is with every
one born of the Spirit.f
9How can this be? Nicodemus asked.
10You are Is
r aels teacher, said Jesus,
and do you not understand t hese t hings?
11Very trul y I tell you, we speak of what we
know, and we test if y to what we have seen,
but still you people do not accept our tes
timony. 12I have spoken to you of earthly
t hings and you do not bel ieve; how then will
you believe if I s peak of heavenly things?
13No one has ever gone into heaven exc ept
the one who came from heavent he Son of
Man.g 14Just as Moses lifted up the s nake in
the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be
lifted up, h 15that everyone who bel ieves may
have eternal life in him.i
16For God so loved the w
orld that he gave
his one and only Son, that whoever believes
in him s hall not perish but have eternal life.
17For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world, but to save the world
t hrough him. 18Whoever believes in him is
not condemned, but whoever does not be
lieve stands condemned al ready bec ause
they have not bel ieved in the name of Gods
one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light
has come into the world, but people loved
darkness instead of light because t heir deeds
were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the
light, and will not come into the l ight for fear
that t heir deeds will be exposed. 21But who
ever lives by the t ruth comes into the light,
so that it may be seen plainly that what they
have done has been done in the s ight of God.

spent some time with them, and bapt ized.

23Now John also was bap

near Salim, bec ause there was plenty of

in prison.) 25An arg u ment developed be
tween some of J ohns disciples and a certain
Jew over the matter of ceremon ia l washi ng.
26They came to John and said to him, Rab

27To this John replied, A pers on can re

28You yourselves can test if y that I said, I am
not the Messia h but am sent a head of him.
29The bride belongs to the brideg room. The

The one who c omes from heaven is a bove all.
32He test if ies to what he has seen and heard,
but no one accepts his testimony. 33Who
ever has accepted it has cert if ied that God is

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees

had h
eard that he was gaini ng and bap
tizi ng more disciples than John2alt hough
in fact it was not Jesus who bapt ized, but his
disc iples. 3So he left Judea and went back
once more to Gali lee.
4Now he had to go t hrough Sam aria. 5So
he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar,
near the plot of g round Jacob had given to
his son Joseph. 6Jacobs well was t here, and
Jesus, t ired as he was from the journey, sat
down by the well. It was a bout noon.

John 4:24

1078

7When a Samarit an woma n came to draw

water, Jesus said to her, Will you give me
a d rink? 8(His disc iples had gone into the
town to buy food.)
9The Samarit an woma n said to him, You
are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woma n. How
can you ask me for a d rink? (For Jews do not
associate with Samaritans. c)
10Jesus ans wered her, If you knew the gift
of God and who it is that asks you for a d
rink,
you would have a sked him and he would
have given you livi ng water.
11Sir, the woma n said, you have noth
ing to draw with and the well is deep. W here
can you get this living water? 12Are you
greater than our fat her Jacob, who gave us
the well and d rank from it himself, as did
also his sons and his livestock?
13Jesus an s wered, Everyone who d rinks
this water will be t hirsty a gain, 14but who
ever d
rinks the water I give them will never
t hirst. Indeed, the water I give them will be
come in them a s pring of water welli ng up to
eternal life.
15The woma n said to him, Sir, give me
this water so that I wont get t hirsty and have
to keep comi ng here to draw water.
16He told her, Go, call your husband and
come back.
17I have no husband, she replied.
Jesus said to her, You are right when
you say you have no husband. 18The fact is,
you have had five husbands, and the man you
now have is not your husband. What you have
just said is q
uite true.
19Sir, the woma n said, I can see that
you are a prophet. 20Our anc estors wor
shiped on this mountain, but you Jews c laim
that the p
lace w
here we must worship is in
Jer usalem.
21Woma n, Jesus replied, bel ieve me, a
time is coming when you will worship the
Fat her neit her on this mountain nor in Jer u
salem. 22You Sa mar itans worship what you
do not know; we worship what we do know,
for salvat ion is from the Jews. 23Yet a time
is comi ng and has now come when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in the
Spirit and in t ruth, for they are the kind of
worshipers the Fat her seeks. 24God is spirit,
and his worshipers must worship in the Spir
it and in truth.

LIVING WATER

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, J esus said to her, Will you give
me a drink? ... J esus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is
that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given
you living water.
John 4:7, 10

ou may have heard the parable of the Good

Samaritan (see Luke 10:2537), but in J esus
day, most Jews thought that the words good
and Samaritan should never go together. Jews avoided
Samaria altogether when they could. Samaritans were
outcasts, and a female Samaritan was about the lowest
anyone could be. A Jew talking kindly to a Samaritan was
rare. Talking to a Samaritan woman in public was unheard of.
So it was a seriously uncommon meeting between a social outcast and the
Prince of Peace when the Samaritan met the Messiah at the well. J esus reached
out first and started a conversation. For the woman, it was astounding
not only that he talked to her, but also that he knew everything about her,
including her sinful past and five husbands. More astounding? He knew it all
and didnt shun her, and he never once laid shame on her. Instead, he offered
her the key to freedom.
Sometimes conversations with God start with him asking the first
question. J esus started by asking for a drink and ended up offering living
water (a relationship with God). He didnt start by pointing out her sin and
preaching in her face. Instead he knew her, loved her like the Father did, and
spoke kindly to her. In their conversation, he revealed the loving truth.
Would you be surprised if J esus talked to you? His living water is for
everyone, including the poor, the outcast, the sinful, and the shameful. The
Samaritan woman experienced the love of the Messiah and then told others
about him. She listened. Will you?

The man took Jesus at his word and de

time when his son got better, they said to
him, Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the

John 5:7

7Sir, the inv alid replied, I have no one

to help me into the pool when the water is
stirred. W hile I am tryi ng to get in, someone
else goes down a head ofme.
8Then Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up
your mat and walk. 9At once the man was
cured; he p
icked up his mat and walked.
The day on w
hich this took p
lace was a
Sabbath, 10and so the Jewish leaders said to
the man who had been healed, It is the Sab
bath; the law forbids you to carr y your mat.
11But he re
plied, The man who made
me well said to me, Pick up your mat and
walk.
12So they a sked him, Who is this fellow
who told you to pick it up and walk?
13The man who was healed had no idea
who it was, for J esus had s lipped away into
the c rowd that was there.
14Later J esus f ound him at the temple and
said to him, See, you are well again. Stop
sinn ing or somet hing worse may happen to
you. 15The man went away and told the Jew
ish leaders that it was Jesus who had made
him well.

The Authority of the Son

16So, because Jesus was doi ng t hese t hings

on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to

persecute him. 17In his defense J esus said to
them, My Fat her is always at his work to this
very day, and I too am worki ng. 18For this
reason they t ried all the more to kill him; not
only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he
was even calli ng God his own Fat her, mak
ing himself e qual with God.
19Jesus gave them this ans wer: Very truly
I tell you, the Son can do nothi ng by himself;
he can do only what he sees his Fat her do
ing, bec ause whatever the Fat her does the
Son also does. 20For the Fat her l oves the Son
and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will
show him even greater w
orks than t hese, so
that you will be a mazed. 21For just as the Fa
ther raises the dead and g ives them life, even
so the Son g ives life to whom he is p
leased
to give it. 22Moreover, the Fat her judges no
one, but has ent rusted all judgment to the
Son, 23that all may honor the Son just as they
honor the Fat her. Whoever does not honor
the Son does not honor the Fat her, who sent
him.

John 5:44 1081

24Very tru
l y I tell you, whoe ver hears
my word and bel ieves him who sent me has
eternal life and will not be judged but has
crossed over from death to life. 25Very truly I
tell you, a time is comi ng and has now come
when the dead will hear the v oice of the Son
of God and t hose who hear will live. 26For
as the Fat her has life in himself, so he has
granted the Son also to have life in himself.
27And he has given him aut horit y to judge
because he is the Son of Man.
28Do not be a mazed at this, for a time is
comi ng when all who are in t heir g raves will
hear his voice 29and come outthose who
have done what is good will rise to live, and
t hose who have done what is evil will rise to
be condemned. 30By myself I can do noth
ing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment
is just, for I seek not to please myself but him
who sentme.

Testimonies About Jesus

31If

I test i f y about myself, my test i mony

is not true. 32There is another who test i f ies
in my favor, and I know that his test imony
about me is true.
33You have sent to John and he has test i
fied to the t ruth. 34Not that I accept human
test imony; but I ment ion it that you may be
saved. 35John was a lamp that burned and
gave l ight, and you chose for a time to enjoy
his light.
36I have test imony weightier than that of
John. For the works that the Fat her has giv
en me to finisht he very works that I am
doi ngtest if y that the Fat her has sent me.
37And the Fat her who sent me has hims elf
test i f ied conc ern i ng me. You have never
heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does
his word dwell in you, for you do not bel ieve
the one he sent. 39You study a the Script ures
diligently bec ause you t hink that in them
you have etern al life. T hese are the very
Script ures that test i f y about me, 40yet you
refuse to come to me to have life.
41I do not acc ept glor y from hum an be
ings, 42but I know you. I know that you do not
have the love of God in your h
earts. 43I have
come in my Fat hers name, and you do not
accept me; but if someone else comes in his
own name, you will accept him. 44How can
you bel ieve since you accept glor y from one

45But do not t hink I will acc use you be

Moses, you w

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Some time after this, Jesus c rossed to

the far shore of the Sea of Gali lee (that
is, the Sea of Tiber ias), 2and a g reat c rowd
of people followed him bec ause they saw
the signs he had performed by healing the
sick. 3Then J esus went up on a mountainside
and sat down with his disciples. 4The Jewish
Passover Fest ival was near.
5When Jesus looked up and saw a g
reat
crowd comi ng toward him, he said to Philip,
Where shall we buy bread for t hese people
to eat? 6He a sked this only to test him, for he
already had in mind what he was goi ng todo.
7Phil
ip answered him, It w ould take
more than half a years wagesb to buy enough
bread for each one to have a bite!
8Anothe r of his disc ip les, And rew, Si
mon Peters brother, s poke up, 9Here is a
boy with five s mall barley loaves and two
small fish, but how far will they go a mong so
many?
10Jesus said, Have the people sit down.
T here was plent y of g rass in that place, and
they sat down (about five thous and men
were t here). 11Jesus then took the loaves,
gave t hanks, and dist ributed to t hose who
were seated as much as they wanted. He did
the same with the fish.
12When they had all had e
nough to eat, he
said to his disciples, Gather the pieces that
are left over. Let nothing be wasted. 13So
they gathered them and f illed t welve baskets
with the pieces of the five barley loaves left
over by t hose who had eaten.
14After the people saw the sign J esus per
formed, they began to say, Surely this is
the Prophet who is to come into the world.
15Jesus, knowi ng that they intended to come
and make him king by f orce, withd rew a gain
to a mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on the Water
16When even ing came, his disc iples went
down to the lake, 17where they got into a boat
and set off across the lake for Capernau m. By
now it was dark, and J esus had not yet j oined
them. 18A strong wind was blowi ng and the
waters grew rough. 19When they had r owed
about t hree or four m iles, c they saw Jesus
approaching the boat, walking on the wa
ter; and they were frightened. 20But he said
to them, It is I; d
ont be a fraid. 21Then they
were willi ng to take him into the boat, and
im med iatel y the boat reached the s hore
where they were headi ng.
22The next day the c rowd that had stayed
on the opposite s hore of the lake rea lized
that only one boat had been t here, and that
Jesus had not entered it with his disc iples,
but that they had gone away a lone. 23Then
some boats from Tiber ia s landed near the
place where the people had eaten the bread
after the Lord had given t hanks. 24Once the
crowd rea li zed that neit her Jesus nor his dis
ciples were t here, they got into the boats and
went to Capernau m in s earch of J esus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25When

they found him on the other side

of the lake, they asked him, Rabbi, when did
you get here?
26Jesus ans wered, Very truly I tell you,
you are looki ng for me, not because you saw
the signs I performed but bec ause you ate
the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work
for food that spoils, but for food that endures
to eternal life, w
hich the Son of Man will give
you. For on him God the Fat her has p
laced
his seal of approva l.
28Then they a
sked him, What must we do
to do the w
orks God requires?
29Jesus an
s wered, The work of God is
this: to bel ieve in the one he has sent.
30So they a sked him, What sign then will
you give that we may see it and bel ieve you?
What will you do? 31Our ancestors ate the
manna in the wilderness; as it is written: He
gave them b
read from heaven to eat.d
32Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you,
it is not Moses who has given you the b
read
from heaven, but it is my Fat her who g ives
you the true bread from heaven. 33For the

34Sir, they said, al
w ays give us this
bread.
35Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of
life. Whoever comes to me will never go hun
gry, and whoever bel ieves in me will never
be t hirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen
me and still you do not bel ieve. 37All those
the Fat her g ives me will come to me, and
whoever c omes to me I will never d
rive away.
38For I have come down from heaven not to
do my will but to do the will of him who sent
me. 39And this is the will of him who sent
me, that I s hall lose none of all t hose he has
given me, but raise them up at the last day.
40For my Fat hers will is that everyone who
looks to the Son and believes in him shall
have eternal life, and I will raise them up at
the last day.
41At this the Jews t here began to grumble
about him because he said, I am the b

that came down from heaven. 42They said,
Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose
father and mother we know? How can he
now say, I came down from heaven?
43Stop grumbling a mong your s elves,
Jesus ans wered. 44No one can come to me
unless the Fat her who sent me d
raws them,
and I will r aise them up at the last day. 45It
is written in the Prophets: They will all be
taught by God.a Everyone who has heard
the Fat her and learned from him c omes to
me. 46No one has seen the Fat her except the
one who is from God; only he has seen the
Fat her. 47Very truly I tell you, the one who
bel ieves has eternal life. 48I am the b
read of
life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the
wilderness, yet they died. 50But here is the
bread that c omes down from heaven, which
anyone may eat and not die. 51I am the livi ng
bread that came down from heaven. Whoev
er eats this b
read will live forever. This b
read
is my f lesh, which I will give for the life of the
world.
52Then the Jews beg an to arg ue sharply
a mong themselves, How can this man give
us his f lesh to eat?
53Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you,
unless you eat the f lesh of the Son of Man
and d rink his b
lood, you have no life in you.
54Who
e ver eats my flesh and d rinks my

up at the last day. 55For my f lesh is real food
and my b
lood is real d
rink. 56Whoever eats
my f lesh and d rinks my b
lood remains in
me, and I in them. 57Just as the livi ng Fat her
sent me and I live because of the Fat her, so
the one who f eeds on me will live because of
me. 58This is the b
read that came down from
heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died,
but whoever f eeds on this bread will live for
ever. 59He said this w hile teaching in the
synagogue in Capernau m.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60On heari ng it, many of his disc iples said,

This is a hard teachi ng. Who can acceptit?

61Aware that his disc iples were grumbling
about this, J esus said to them, Does this of
fend you? 62Then what if you see the Son of
Man ascend to where he was before! 63The
Spirit g ives life; the f lesh counts for noth
ing. The words I have spoken to yout hey
are full of the Spiritb and life. 64Yet t here are
some of you who do not believe. For Jesus
had k nown from the beg inn ing w
hich of
them did not bel ieve and who w
ould bet ray
him. 65He went on to say, This is why I told
you that no one can come to me unless the
Fat her has enabled them.
66From this time many of his dis
c iples
t urned back and no longer followed him.
67You do not want to leave too, do you?
Jesus a sked the Twelve.
68Simon Peter ans wered him, Lord, to
whom shall we go? You have the words of
eter nal life. 69We have come to bel ieve and
to know that you are the Holy One of God.
70Then Jesus replied, Have I not chosen
you, the T
welve? Yet one of you is a devil!
71(He meant Jud as, the son of Simon Isc ar
iot, who, t hough one of the T
welve, was later
to bet ray him.)

Jesus Goes to the Festival

ofTabernacles

After this, Jesus went a round in Gali lee.

He did not wantc to go about in Judea
because the Jewish leaders t here were look

brothers said to him, Leave Gali lee and go
to Judea, so that your disciples t here may see

the w

come a publ ic figu re acts in secret. S ince you
are doi ng t hese t hings, show yourself to the
world. 5For even his own brothers did not
bel ieve in him.
6Therefore Jesus told them, My time is
not yet here; for you any time will do. 7The
world cannot hate you, but it h
ates me be
cause I test if y that its works are evil. 8You
go to the fest ival. I am nota goi ng up to this
fest iv al, bec ause my time has not yet fully
come. 9After he had said this, he stayed in
Gal i lee.
10Howe ver, after his brothers had left for
the fest ival, he went also, not publicly, but
in sec ret. 11Now at the festiv al the Jewish
leaders were watchi ng for Jesus and aski ng,
Where ishe?
12Among the
c rowds there was wide
spread whispering about him. Some said,
He is a good man.
Others replied, No, he deceives the peo
ould say anyt hing pub

licly about him for fear of the leaders.

Jesus Teaches at the Festival

14Not unt il half w ay t hrough the fest iv al
did Jesus go up to the temple courts and be
gin to t each. 15The Jews t here were a mazed
and a sked, How did this man get such
learni ng without havi ng been taught?
16Jesus an
s wered, My teaching is not
my own. It c omes from the one who sent
me. 17Anyone who chooses to do the will
of God will find out whether my teaching
comes from God or whether I s peak on my
own. 18Whoever s peaks on t heir own does
so to gain persona l glor y, but he who seeks
the glor y of the one who sent him is a man
of t ruth; t here is nothing false about him.
19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not
one of you k eeps the law. Why are you tryi ng
to killme?
20You are demon-possessed, the c rowd
answered. Who is tryi ng to kill you?
21Jesus said to them, I did one mirac le,
and you are all a mazed. 22Yet, because Mo
ses gave you circ umcision (though act ua l ly
it did not come from Moses, but from the pa
tria rchs), you circ umcise a boy on the Sab
bath. 23Now if a boy can be circ umcised on

the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not

be broken, why are you ang ry with me for
heali ng a mans w
hole body on the Sabbath?
24Stop judgi ng by mere appeara nces, but in
stead judge correctly.

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25At that p
oint some of the people of Jer u

salem began to ask, Isnt this the man they

are tryi ng to kill? 26Here he is, speaki ng pub
licly, and they are not sayi ng a word to him.
Have the aut hor it ies real ly concluded that
he is the Messia h? 27But we know where this
man is from; when the Messia h comes, no
one will know w
here he is from.
28Then Jesus, still teachi ng in the temple
courts, c ried out, Yes, you know me, and
you know w
here I am from. I am not here
on my own aut horit y, but he who sent me is
true. You do not know him, 29but I know him
because I am from him and he sentme.
30At this they t ried to s
eize him, but no
one laid a hand on him, bec ause his hour
had not yet come. 31Still, many in the crowd
bel ieved in him. They said, When the Mes
sia h c omes, will he perform more s igns than
this man?
32The Pharis ees heard the c
rowd whis
pering such things about him. Then the
chief p
riests and the Pharisees sent temple
g uards to arrest him.
33Jesus said, I am with you for only a
short time, and then I am goi ng to the one
who sent me. 34You will look for me, but you
will not find me; and w
here I am, you cannot
come.
35The Jews said to one another, Where
does this man intend to go that we cannot
find him? Will he go where our people live
scattered a mong the Greeks, and t each the
Greeks? 36What did he mean when he said,
You will look for me, but you will not find
me, and Where I am, you cannot come?
37On the last and greatest day of the fest i
val, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let
anyone who is t hirsty come to me and d
rink.
38Whoe ver bel ieves in me, as Script ure has
said, rivers of living water will flow from
withi n them. b 39By this he meant the Spirit,
whom t hose who believed in him were lat
er to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had

has said, Out of him (or them) will flow rivers of living water.

not been given, s ince Jesus had not yet been

glor if ied.
40On heari ng his words, some of the peo
ple said, Surely this man is the Prophet.
41Others said, He is the Messia h.
Still others a sked, How can the Messi
ah come from Gali lee? 42Does not Script ure
say that the Messia h will come from Dav ids
descendants and from Bethlehem, the town
where Dav id l ived? 43Thus the people were
div ided because of Jesus. 44Some wanted to
seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

the temple g uards went back

to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who
asked them, Why d

46No one ever s
poke the way this man
does, the g uards replied.
47You mean he has dec eived you also?
the Phar isees retorted. 48Have any of the
rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
49No! But this mob that k
nows nothi ng of the
lawt here is a c urse on them.
50Nicodemus, who had gone to J esus ear
lier and who was one of t heir own number,
a sked, 51Does our law condemn a man
without f irst heari ng him to find out what he
has been doi ng?
52They replied, Are you from Gali lee, too?
Look into it, and you will find that a prophet
does not come out of Gali lee.

53Then

they all went home, 1but Jesus went to

2At dawn he ap

round him,
and he sat down to teach them. 3The teachers of
the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman
c aught in adultery. They made her s tand before
the g roup 4and said to J esus, Teacher, this woman
was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses
commanded us to s tone such women. Now what do
you say? 6They were using this quest ion as a trap,
in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But J esus bent down and started to write on the
g round with his finger. 7When they kept on ques
tioning him, he straightened up and said to them,

9780310744238_int_05_matt_acts_niv_big_dreams_FINAL.indd 1085

John 8:24 1085

Let any one of you who is without sin be the f irst to
throw a stone at her. 8Again he stooped down and
wrote on the ground.
9At this, t hose who h
eard began to go away one
at a time, the older ones f irst, unt il only J esus was
left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus
straightened up and a
sked her, Woman, w
here are
they? Has no one condemned you?
11No one, sir, she said.
Then neither do I cond emn you, Jesus de
clared. Go now and leave your life of sin.

Dispute Over Jesus Testimony

12When Jesus spoke again to the people,
he said, I am the l ight of the w
orld. Whoever
follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the l ight of life.
13The Pharis ees challenged him, Here
you are, appearing as your own witness;
your test imony is not valid.
14Jesus ans wered, Even if I test if y on my
own behalf, my test imony is valid, for I know
w here I came from and w
here I am going.
But you have no idea where I come from or
w here I am going. 15You judge by human
standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16But
if I do j udge, my decisions are true, because
I am not a lone. I s tand with the Fat her, who
sent me. 17In your own Law it is written that
the test imony of two witnesses is true. 18I am
one who test if ies for myself; my other wit
ness is the Fat her, who sentme.
19Then they a
sked him, Where is your fa
ther?
You do not know me or my Fat her, Jesus
replied. If you knew me, you would know
my Father also. 20He spoke t hese words
w hile teaching in the temple c ourts near
the p
lace where the offeri ngs were put. Yet
no one seized him, because his hour had not
yet come.

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21Once more Jesus said to them, I am go
ing away, and you will look for me, and you
will die in your sin. W
here I go, you cannot
come.
22This made the Jews ask, Will he kill
himself? Is that why he says, Where I go, you
cannot come?
23But he cont inued, You are from below;
I am from a bove. You are of this world; I am
not of this world. 24I told you that you w
ould

7/16/15 2:58 PM

die in your sins; if you do not bel ieve that I

am he, you will indeed die in your sins.
25Who are you? they asked.
Just what I have been telli ng you from the
beg inn ing, Jesus replied. 26I have much to
say in judgment of you. But he who sent me
is trustwort hy, and what I have heard from
him I tell the world.
27They did not unders tand that he was
telling them a bout his Father. 28So Jesus
said, When you have lifted upa the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he and
that I do nothi ng on my own but s peak just
what the Fat her has taught me. 29The one
who sent me is with me; he has not left me
a lone, for I alw ays do what pleases him.
30Even as he s
poke, many bel ieved in him.

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus

OpponentsAre
31To the Jews who had bel ieved him, Jesus
said, If you hold to my teaching, you are
real ly my disc iples. 32Then you will know
the t ruth, and the t ruth will set you free.
33They ans wered him, We are Abrahams
descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set
free?
34Jesus replied, Very trul y I tell you, ev
eryone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a
slave has no permanent place in the fami
ly, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the
Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37I
know that you are Abrahams descendants.
Yet you are looki ng for a way to kill me, be
cause you have no room for my word. 38I am
telli ng you what I have seen in the Fat hers
presence, and you are doi ng what you have
heard from your fat her.b
39Abraham is our fat her, they ans wered.
If you were Abrahams child ren, said
Jesus, then you wouldc do what Abraham
did. 40As it is, you are looki ng for a way to kill
me, a man who has told you the t ruth that I
heard from God. Abraham did not do such
t hings. 41You are doing the works of your
own fat her.
We are not il leg it i mate child ren, they
protested. The only Fat her we have is God
himself.
42Jesus said to them, If God were your
Fat her, you w
ould love me, for I have come

here from God. I have not come on my own;

God sent me. 43Why is my lang uage not clear
to you? Because you are unable to hear what
I say. 44You belong to your fat her, the devi l,
and you want to carr y out your fat hers de
sires. He was a murderer from the beg in
ning, not holdi ng to the t ruth, for t here is no
t ruth in him. When he lies, he speaks his na
tive lang uage, for he is a liar and the fat her of
lies. 45Yet because I tell the t ruth, you do not
bel ieve me! 46Can any of you p
rove me g uilty
of sin? If I am telli ng the t ruth, why dont you
bel ieve me? 47Whoever belongs to God hears
what God says. The reason you do not hear is
that you do not belong to God.

Jesus Claims About Himself

48The Jews ans wered him, Arent we r
ight
in sayi ng that you are a Samaritan and de
mon-possessed?
49I am not poss essed by a demon, said
Jesus, but I honor my Fat her and you dis
honor me. 50I am not seeki ng glor y for my
self; but t here is one who seeks it, and he is
the judge. 51Very truly I tell you, whoe ver
obeys my word will never see death.
52At this they exc laimed, Now we know
that you are demon-possessed! Abrah am
died and so did the prophets, yet you say
that whoe ver obeys your word will never
taste death. 53Are you greater than our fat her
Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets.
Who do you t hink you are?
54Jesus replied, If I glor if y myself, my glor y
means nothing. My Fat her, whom you c laim
as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55Though you do not know him, I know him.
If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but
I do know him and obey his word. 56Your fa
ther Abraham rejoiced at the t hought of see
ing my day; he saw it and was glad.
57You are not yet fift y y
ears old, they
said to him, and you have seen Abraham!
58Very truly I tell you, Jesus ans wered,
before Abraham was born, I am! 59At this,
they p
icked up s tones to s tone him, but J esus
hid himself, slipping away from the temple
grounds.

that he was born blind?

that the w

in him. 4As long as it is day, we must do the
works of him who sent me. N
ight is comi ng,
when no one can work. 5While I am in the
world, I am the l ight of the world.
6After sayi ng this, he spit on the g
round,
made some mud with the sal iva, and put it
on the mans eyes. 7Go, he told him, wash
in the Pool of Siloa m (this word m

came home seei ng.
8His neighb ors and those who had for
merly seen him begg ing a sked, Isnt this the
same man who used to sit and beg? 9Some
claimed that he was.
Others said, No, he only l ooks like him.
But he himself insisted, I am the man.
10How then were your eyes
opened?
they asked.
11He re
plied, The man they call Jesus
made some mud and put it on my eyes. He
told me to go to Siloa m and wash. So I went
and washed, and then I c ould see.
12Where is this man? they a
sked him.
I d
ont know, he said.

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

13They brought to the Pharisees the man
who had been blind. 14Now the day on which
Jesus had made the mud and o
pened the
mans eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the
Pharisees also a sked him how he had re
ceived his s ight. He put mud on my eyes, the
man replied, and I w
ashed, and now I see.
16Some of the Pharisees said, This man is
not from God, for he does not keep the Sab
bath.
But others a sked, How can a sinner per
form such s igns? So they were div ided.
17Then they turned a
gain to the b
lind
man, What have you to say about him? It
was your eyes he opened.
The man replied, He is a prophet.
18They s
till did not believe that he had
been b
lind and had received his s ight unt il
they sent for the m
ans parents. 19Is this your
son? they asked. Is this the one you say was
born b
lind? How is it that now he can see?
a38,39

John 9:39

20We know he is our son, the par

ents
answered, and we know he was born b
lind.
21But how he can see now, or who opened his
eyes, we dont know. Ask him. He is of age; he
will s peak for himself. 22His parents said this
because they were a fraid of the Jewish leaders,
who already had decided that anyone who ac
knowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would
be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why
his parents said, He is of age; ask him.
24A second time they summoned the man
who had been blind. Give glor y to God by
telli ng the t ruth, they said. We know this
man is a sinner.
25He replied, Whether he is a sinner or
not, I dont know. One t hing I do know. I was
blind but now I see!
26Then they a
sked him, What did he do
to you? How did he open your eyes?
27He ans wered, I have told you already
and you did not listen. Why do you want to
hear it a gain? Do you want to become his
disciples too?
28Then they h
urled insults at him and
said, You are this fellows disciple! We are
disc iples of Mos es! 29We know that God
spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we
dont even know w
here he c omes from.
30The man an
s wered, Now that is re
markable! You d
ont know where he c omes
from, yet he o
pened my eyes. 31We know that
God does not listen to sinners. He listens to
the godly person who does his will. 32No
body has ever heard of openi ng the eyes of a
man born blind. 33If this man were not from
God, he c ould do nothi ng.
34To this they replied, You were steeped
in sin at birth; how dare you lect ure us! And
they t hrew him out.

out, and when he found him, he said, Do
you bel ieve in the Son of Man?
36Who is he, sir? the man a sked. Tell
me so that I may bel ieve in him.
37Jesus said, You have now seen him; in
fact, he is the one speaki ng with you.
38Then the man said, Lord, I believe,
and he worshiped him.
39Jesus said,a For judgment I have come
into this world, so that the blind will see and
t hose who see will become blind.

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10

Very truly I tell you Pharisees, any

one who does not enter the sheep pen
by the gate, but c limbs in by some other way,
is a t hief and a robber. 2The one who enters
by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The
gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the
sheep listen to his v oice. He c alls his own
sheep by name and leads them out. 4When
he has brought out all his own, he goes on
a head of them, and his s heep follow him
because they know his voice. 5But they will
never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run
away from him because they do not recog
nize a strangers v oice. 6Jesus used this fig
ure of s peech, but the Pharisees did not un
derstand what he was telli ng them.
7Therefore Jesus said again, Very trul y I
tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who
have come before me are t hieves and rob
bers, but the sheep have not listened to them.
9I am the gate; whoe ver enters t hrough me
will be s aved.a They will come in and go out,
and find past ure. 10The t hief c omes only to
steal and kill and destroy; I have come that
they may have life, and have it to the full.
11I am the good shep
herd. The good
shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12The h ired hand is not the shepherd and
does not own the s heep. So when he sees the
wolf coming, he abandons the s heep and
runs away. Then the wolf att acks the f lock
and scatters it. 13The man runs away be
cause he is a h ired hand and cares nothi ng
for the sheep.
14I am the good shep
herd; I know my
sheep and my sheep know me15just as the
Fat her k nows me and I know the Fat her
and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have
other s heep that are not of this s heep pen. I
must bring them also. They too will listen to
my v oice, and t here s hall be one f lock and
one shepherd. 17The reason my Fat her loves
me is that I lay down my lifeonly to take
a9Orkept safe b22That is, Hanukkah c29

it up a gain. 18No one t akes it from me, but

I lay it down of my own accord. I have au
thorit y to lay it down and aut horit y to take
it up a gain. This command I received from
my Fat her.
19The Jews who h
eard t hese w
ords were
again div ided. 20Many of them said, He is
demon-possessed and ravi ng mad. Why lis
ten to him?
21But others said, These are not the say
ings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a
demon open the eyes of the blind?

Further Conflict Over Jesus Claims

22Then came the Fest iv al of Ded ic at ion b
at Jer usalem. It was winter, 23and Jesus was
in the temple c ourts walking in Solomons
Colonnade. 24The Jews who were t here gath
ered a round him, sayi ng, How long will you
keep us in suspense? If you are the Messia h,
tell us plainly.
25Jesus ans wered, I did tell you, but you
do not bel ieve. The w
orks I do in my Fat hers
name test if y about me, 26but you do not be
lieve bec ause you are not my s heep. 27My
sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and
they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and
they shall never perish; no one will snatch
them out of my hand. 29My Fat her, who has
given them to me, is greater than allc; no one
can s natch them out of my Fat hers hand. 30I
and the Fat her are one.
31Again his Jew i sh opp on ents p icked
up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to
them, I have s hown you many good w
orks
from the Fat her. For w
hich of t hese do you
stoneme?
33We are not stoning you for any good
work, they replied, but for blasphemy, be
cause you, a mere man, c laim to be God.
34Jesus ans wered them, Is it not written
in your Law, I have said you are godsd?
35If he c alled them gods, to whom the word
of God camea nd Script ure cannot be set
aside 36what about the one whom the Fa
ther set a part as his very own and sent into
the w
orld? Why then do you acc use me of
blasphemy because I said, I am Gods Son?
37Do not bel ieve me unless I do the works of
my Fat her. 38But if I do them, even t hough
you do not believe me, believe the works,

that you may know and understand that the

they t ried to s eize him, but he escaped t heir

40Then
Jesus went back a cross the Jor

The Death of Lazarus

11

Now a man named Laza r us was sick.

He was from Betha ny, the village of
Mary and her sister Martha. 2(This Mary,
whose brother Laza r us now lay sick, was the
same one who poured perf ume on the Lord
and w iped his feet with her hair.) 3So the sis
ters sent word to Jesus, Lord, the one you
love is sick.
4When he h
eard this, Jesus said, This
sickness will not end in d
eath. No, it is for
Gods glor y so that Gods Son may be glor i
fied t hrough it. 5Now Jesus loved Mar t ha
and her sister and Laza r us. 6So when he
heard that Laza r us was sick, he stayed where
he was two more days, 7and then he said to
his disciples, Let us go back to Judea.
8But Rabbi, they said, a short w hile ago
the Jews t here t ried to stone you, and yet you
are goi ng back?
9Jesus an
s wered, Are there not twelve
hours of dayl ight? Anyone who walks in the
dayt ime will not stumble, for they see by this
worlds l ight. 10It is when a person walks at
n ight that they stumble, for they have no
light.
11After he had said this, he went on to tell
them, Our f riend Laza r us has fallen a sleep;
but I am goi ng t here to wake himup.
12His disc iples replied, Lord, if he s
leeps,
he will get better. 13Jesus had been speak
ing of his d

meant natu ral sleep.
14So then he told them plainl y, Laza r us
is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was
not t here, so that you may bel ieve. But let us
go to him.
16Then Thom
a s (also k nown as Didy
musa) said to the rest of the disciples, Let us
also go, that we may die with him.

Jesus Comforts the Sisters ofLazarus

17On his arr iva l, Jesus found that Laza r us
had already been in the tomb for four days.
18Now Beth
a ny was less than two m ilesb
from Jer usalem, 19and many Jews had come
to Mart ha and Mary to comfort them in the
loss of t heir brother. 20When Mar t ha heard
that J esus was comi ng, she went out to meet
him, but Mary s tayed at home.
21Lord, Mart ha said to Jesus, if you had
been here, my brother w
ould not have died.
22But I know that even now God will give you
whatever you ask.
23Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise
again.
24Mart ha ans wered, I know he will rise
again in the resu rrect ion at the last day.
25Jesus said to her, I am the resu rrect ion
and the life. The one who bel ieves in me will
live, even t hough they die; 26and whoever
lives by believing in me will never die. Do
you bel ieve this?
27Yes, Lord, she replied, I bel ieve that
you are the Messia h, the Son of God, who is
to come into the world.
28After she had said this, she went back
and called her sister Mary a side. The Teach
er is here, she said, and is aski ng for you.
29When Mary h
eard this, she got up quick
ly and went to him. 30Now J esus had not yet
entered the village, but was still at the place
where Mart ha had met him. 31When the Jews
who had been with Mary in the h

forting her, not iced how quickly she got up
and went out, they followed her, supposi ng
she was going to the tomb to m

32When Mary
reached the place w here
Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and
said, Lord, if you had been here, my brother
would not have died.
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the
Jews who had come a long with her also
weepi ng, he was deeply moved in spirit and
troubled. 34Where have you laid him? he
asked.
Come and see, Lord, they replied.
35Jesus wept.
36Then the Jews said, See how he loved
him!
37But some of them said, Could not he

kept this man from dyi ng?

ary was heartbroken. Her brother had died,

and J esus didnt come when Mary sent for
him. She didnt understand and felt like
Jesus let her down. After what felt like forever (but was
actually just a few days), J esus showed up. Mary ran to
meet him. She fell down at his feet and said, Jesus, if you
had been here, my brother would not have died (vs. 32).
Have you felt that way? If J esus had only been here, ______________
would not have happened. Just like Mary, you might get upset and wonder
why J esus let such a bad thing happen.
Mary cried. We cry. But J esus cried too. He knew that he was going to raise
Lazarus from the dead in just a few minutes, but he still cried. J esus wasnt
only crying because Lazarus was dead. He was also crying because he felt the
sadness of someone he loved, and it broke his heart too.
Jesus knows what is happening in your life. He knows the sad things that
are going onor the hard circumstances you will go through someday. He
will make everything right again when he comes back. But he still cries. He
cries because your heart is hurt. He cries because he hates to see you so sad.
If you are sad, be honest with J esus. Tell him you are hurt and why. He
understands and he will comfort you. He loves you that much.

John 11:38

Jesus Raises Lazarus From theDead

38Jesus,

once more deeply moved, came

to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid
across the ent rance. 39Take away the s tone,
he said.
But, Lord, said Mart ha, the sister of the
dead man, by this time t here is a bad odor,
for he has been t here four days.
40Then J esus said, Did I not tell you that
if you bel ieve, you will see the glor y of God?
41So they took away the s
tone. Then J esus
looked up and said, Fat her, I t hank you that
you have heard me. 42I knew that you always
hear me, but I said this for the benef it of the
people standi ng here, that they may bel ieve
that you sentme.
43When he had said this, J esus c
alled in a
loud v oice, Laza r us, come out! 44The dead
man came out, his hands and feet w rapped
with s trips of linen, and a c loth a round his
face.
Jesus said to them, Take off the g rave
clothes and let himgo.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45Therefore many of the Jews who had
come to visit Mary, and had seen what J esus
did, believed in him. 46But some of them
went to the Pharisees and told them what
riests and
Jesus had done. 47Then the chief p
the Pharisees c alled a meeti ng of the San
hed rin.
What are we ac
c om
p lish
i ng? they
asked. Here is this man performi ng many
signs. 48If we let him go on like this, every
one will believe in him, and then the Ro
mans will come and take away both our tem
ple and our nat ion.
49Then one of them,
n amed Caiaphas,
who was high p
riest that year, s poke up, You
know nothi ng at all! 50You do not rea li ze that
it is better for you that one man die for the
people than that the w
hole nat ion perish.
51He did not say this on his own, but as
high priest that year he prophe sied that
Jesus w
ould die for the Jewish nat ion, 52and
not only for that nat ion but also for the scat
tered child ren of God, to b
ring them togeth
er and make them one. 53So from that day on
they plotted to take his life.
54Therefore Jesus no longer moved about
publ icly a mong the people of Judea. Instead

John 12:13

he withd rew to a reg ion near the wilderness,

to a village called Ephrai m, where he stayed
with his disciples.
55When it was almost time for the Jewi sh
Passover, many went up from the count ry
to Jer usalem for t heir ceremon ia l cleansi ng
before the Passover. 56They kept looki ng for
Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts
they a sked one another, What do you t hink?
Isnt he comi ng to the fest ival at all? 57But
the chief p
riests and the Pharisees had giv
en orders that anyone who found out where
Jesus was s hould report it so that they m
ight
arrest him.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

12

Six days before the Passover, Jesus

came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived,
whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2Here
a dinner was given in Jesus honor. Mart ha
served, while Laza r us was a mong t hose re
clining at the table with him. 3Then Mary
took about a pinta of pure nard, an expen
sive perf ume; she p
oured it on J esus feet and
w iped his feet with her hair. And the house
was f illed with the fragrance of the perf ume.
4But one of his disc iples, Jud as Isc ar iot,
who was later to bet ray him, objected, 5Why
wasnt this perf ume sold and the money giv
en to the poor? It was w
orth a y ears wages.b
6He did not say this bec ause he c
ared about
the poor but because he was a t hief; as keep
er of the money bag, he used to help himself
to what was put intoit.
7Leave her a
lone, J esus replied. It was
intended that she s hould save this perf ume
for the day of my buria l. 8You will alw ays
have the poor a mong you,c but you will not
always haveme.
9Meanw hile a large c rowd of Jews found
out that J esus was t here and came, not only
because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom
he had r aised from the dead. 10So the chief
priests made p
lans to kill Laza r us as well,
11for on account of him many of the Jews were
going over to J esus and believing in him.

Jesus Predicts His Death

20Now there were some G

my servant also will be. My Fat her will honor
the one who s ervesme.
27Now my soul is trou
bled, and what
shall I say? Fat her, save me from this hour?
No, it was for this very reason I came to this
hour. 28Fat her, glor if y your name!
Then a voice came from heaven, I have

glor if ied it, and will glor if y it a gain. 29The

c rowd that was t here and heard it said it had
thundered; others said an angel had spoken
to him.
30Jesus said, This v
oice was for your ben
efit, not mine. 31Now is the time for judg
ment on this world; now the prince of this
world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am
lifted up d from the earth, will draw all peo
ple to myself. 33He said this to show the
kind of d
eath he was goi ng to die.
34The c rowd s poke up, We have heard
from the Law that the Messia h will remain
forever, so how can you say, The Son of Man
must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?
35Then Jesus told them, You are goi ng to
have the l ight just a litt le while longer. Walk
w hile you have the light, before darkness
overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark
does not know w
here they are goi ng. 36Be
lieve in the light w hile you have the light,
so that you may become child ren of light.
When he had finished speaking, Jesus left
and hid himself from them.

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37Even after J esus had performed so many
s igns in t heir presence, they s till would not
bel ieve in him. 38This was to fulf ill the word
of Isaiah the prophet:

Lord, who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the Lord
been revealed?e
39For

this reason they could not believe,

because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turna nd I would heal them.f
41Isaiah said this bec ause he saw J esus glor y

and spoke a bout him.

42Yet at the same time many even a
mong
the leaders believed in him. But bec ause
of the Pharisees they w
ould not openly ac
knowledge t heir faith for fear they would be
put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved

in me does not bel ieve in me only, but in the

one who sent me. 45The one who looks at me
is seei ng the one who sent me. 46I have come
into the w
orld as a l ight, so that no one who
bel ieves in me s hould stay in darkness.
47If anyone hears my words but does not
keep them, I do not judge that person. For I
did not come to judge the world, but to save
the world. 48There is a judge for the one who
rejects me and does not accept my words;
the very words I have spoken will condemn
them at the last day. 49For I did not s peak on
my own, but the Fat her who sent me com
manded me to say all that I have spoken. 50I
know that his command l eads to eternal life.
So whatever I say is just what the Fat her has
told me to say.

Jesus Washes His Disciples Feet

13

It was just before the Passover Fes

tiv al. Jesus knew that the hour had
come for him to leave this world and go to
the Fat her. Havi ng loved his own who were
in the w
orld, he l oved them to the end.
2The even ing meal was in progress, and
the devil had already prompted Judas, the
son of Simon Iscariot, to bet ray Jesus. 3Jesus
knew that the Fat her had put all t hings un
der his power, and that he had come from
God and was ret urning to God; 4so he got
up from the meal, took off his outer cloth
ing, and w rapped a towel a round his waist.
5Af
ter that, he p
oured water into a basin
and began to wash his disc iples feet, dry
ing them with the towel that was w
rapped
a round him.
6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,
Lord, are you goi ng to wash my feet?
7Jesus replied, You do not rea lize now
what I am doing, but later you will under
stand.
8No, said Peter, you s
hall never wash
my feet.
Jesus ans wered, Unless I wash you, you
have no part withme.
9Then, Lord, Simon Peter replied, not
just my feet but my h
ands and my head as
well!
10Jesus ans wered, Those who have had a
bath need only to wash t heir feet; t heir w
hole
body is clean. And you are clean, t hough not
every one of you. 11For he knew who was go

John 13:30

ing to bet ray him, and that was why he said

not every one was clean.
12When he had fin
i shed washing their
feet, he put on his clothes and ret urned to
his place. Do you understand what I have
done for you? he a sked them. 13You call
me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for
that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and
Teacher, have w ashed your feet, you also
should wash one anothers feet. 15I have set
you an exa mple that you should do as I have
done for you. 16Very truly I tell you, no ser
vant is greater than his master, nor is a mes
senger greater than the one who sent him.
17Now that you know t hese t hings, you will
be b
lessed if you do them.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18I am not referr ing to all of you; I know
t hose I have chosen. But this is to fulf ill this
passage of Scripture: He who s hared my
bread has t urned a against me.b
19I am telli ng you now before it happens,
so that when it does happen you will bel ieve
that I am who I am. 20Very truly I tell you,
whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me;
and whoe ver acc epts me acc epts the one
who sentme.
21After he had said this, Jesus was trou
bled in spirit and test if ied, Very truly I tell
you, one of you is goi ng to bet rayme.
22His disc iples stared at one another, at a
loss to know w
hich of them he m
eant. 23One
of them, the disciple whom J esus loved, was
reclining next to him. 24Si mon Peter mo
tioned to this disc iple and said, Ask him
which one he means.
25Leaning back a gainst Jesus, he a sked
him, Lord, who isit?
26Jesus ans wered, It is the one to whom
I will give this piece of bread when I have
d ipped it in the dish. Then, dipping the
piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of
Si mon Iscar iot. 27As soon as Judas took the
bread, Satan entered into him.
So J esus told him, What you are a bout
to do, do quickly. 28But no one at the meal
understood why Jesus said this to him.
29Since Ju
d as had c harge of the mone y,
some t hought J esus was telli ng him to buy
what was needed for the fest iv al, or to give
somet hing to the poor. 30As soon as Judas

had taken the bread, he went out. And it was

night.

Jesus Predicts Peters Denial

31When he was gone, Jesus said, Now the
Son of Man is glor if ied and God is glor if ied
in him. 32If God is glor if ied in him,a God will
glor if y the Son in himself, and will glor if y
him at once.
33My child ren, I will be with you only a
litt le longer. You will look for me, and just as
I told the Jews, so I tell you now: W
here I am
goi ng, you cannot come.
34A new comm and I give you: Love one
another. As I have loved you, so you must
love one another. 35By this everyone will
know that you are my disciples, if you love
one another.
36Simon Peter a sked him, Lord, w
here
are you goi ng?
Jesus replied, Where I am going, you
cannot follow now, but you will follow later.
37Peter a
sked, Lord, why c ant I follow
you now? I will lay down my life for you.
38Then Jesus an
s wered, Will you real
ly lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell
you, before the rooster crows, you will dis
own me t hree times!

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14

Do not let your h

earts be troubled.
You believe in Godb; believe also in
me. 2My Fat hers house has many rooms; if
that were not so, would I have told you that
I am goi ng t here to prepare a p
lace for you?
3And if I go and prepare a p
lace for you, I will
come back and take you to be with me that
you also may be where I am. 4You know the
way to the p
lace where I am goi ng.

Jesus the Way to the Father

5Thom
a s said to him, Lord, we d
ont
know w here you are going, so how can we
know the way?
6Jesus ans wered, I am the way and the
t ruth and the life. No one comes to the Fat her
except t hrough me. 7If you really know me,
you will knowc my Fat her as well. From now
on, you do know him and have seen him.
8Philip said, Lord, show us the Father
and that will be e nough forus.

John 14:26 1094

9Jesus an
s wered: Dont you know me,
Philip, even after I have been a mong you
such a long time? Anyone who has seen me
has seen the Fat her. How can you say, Show
us the Fat her? 10Dont you bel ieve that I am
in the Fat her, and that the Fat her is in me?
The w
ords I say to you I do not speak on my
own aut horit y. Rather, it is the Fat her, livi ng
in me, who is doi ng his work. 11Bel ieve me
when I say that I am in the Fat her and the
Fat her is in me; or at least bel ieve on the ev
idence of the w
orks themselves. 12Very truly
I tell you, whoever bel ieves in me will do the
works I have been doing, and they will do
even greater t hings than t hese, because I am
goi ng to the Fat her. 13And I will do whatever
you ask in my name, so that the Fat her may
be glor if ied in the Son. 14You may ask me for
anyt hing in my name, and I will doit.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15If

you love me, keep my commands.

I will ask the Fat her, and he will give
you another advoc ate to help you and be
with you forever 17the Spirit of t ruth. The
world cannot accept him, because it neit her
sees him nor k nows him. But you know him,
for he l ives with you and will bed in you. 18I
will not leave you as orphans; I will come to
you. 19Before long, the w
orld will not see me
anymore, but you will see me. Because I live,
you also will live. 20On that day you will re
ali ze that I am in my Fat her, and you are in
me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my com
mands and keeps them is the one who loves
me. The one who loves me will be loved by
my Fat her, and I too will love them and show
myself to them.
22Then Jud as (not Jud as Isc ar iot) said,
But, Lord, why do you intend to show your
self to us and not to the world?
23Jesus re
plied, Anyone who loves me
will obey my teaching. My Fat her will love
them, and we will come to them and make
our home with them. 24Anyone who does
not love me will not obey my teachi ng. T
hese
words you hear are not my own; they belong
to the Fat her who sentme.
25All this I have spoken w hile s till with
you. 26But the Advoc ate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Fat her will send in my name, will
teach you all t hings and will rem ind you of

with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to
you as the w

be troubled and do not be afraid.
28You heard me say, I am goi ng away and
I am coming back to you. If you loved me,
you w
ould be glad that I am goi ng to the Fa
ther, for the Fat her is greater than I. 29I have
told you now before it happens, so that when
it does happen you will bel ieve. 30I will not
say much more to you, for the prince of this
world is coming. He has no hold over me,
31but he c omes so that the w
orld may learn
that I love the Fat her and do exactly what my
Fat her has commandedme.
Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15

I am the true vine, and my Fat her

is the gardener. 2He cuts off every
branch in me that bears no f ruit, while ev
ery b
ranch that does bear f ruit he prunesa so
that it will be even more fruitf ul. 3You are al
ready clean because of the word I have spo
ken to you. 4Remain in me, as I also remain
in you. No branch can bear f ruit by itself; it
must remain in the vine. Neither can you
bear f ruit unless you remain inme.
5I am the vine; you are the branche s. If
you remain in me and I in you, you will bear
much f ruit; apart from me you can do noth
ing. 6If you do not remain in me, you are like
a branch that is t hrown away and withers;
such branches are p
icked up, t hrown into
the fire and b
urned. 7If you remain in me
and my words remain in you, ask whatever
you wish, and it will be done for you. 8This
is to my Fat hers glor y, that you bear much
f ruit, showi ng yourselves to be my disciples.
9As the Fat her has loved me, so have I
loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you
keep my commands, you will remain in my
love, just as I have kept my Fathers com
mands and remain in his love. 11I have told
you this so that my joy may be in you and
that your joy may be complete. 12My com
mand is this: Love each other as I have loved
you. 13Greater love has no one than this: to
lay down ones life for ones friends. 14You
are my f riends if you do what I command. 15I
no longer call you servants, bec ause a ser
vant does not know his masters business.
a2

John 16:6 1095

Instead, I have c alled you f riends, for every
thing that I learned from my Fat her I have
made k nown to you. 16You did not choose
me, but I chose you and appointed you so
that you m
ight go and bear f ruitfruit that
will lasta nd so that whatever you ask in
my name the Fat her will give you. 17This is
my command: Love each other.

The World Hates the Disciples

18If

the world h
ates you, keep in mind
that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to
the world, it would love you as its own. As it
is, you do not belong to the world, but I have
chosen you out of the w
orld. That is why the
world hates you. 20Remember what I told
you: A servant is not greater than his mas
ter.b If they persecuted me, they will perse
cute you also. If they obeyed my teaching,
they will obey yours also. 21They will t reat
you this way because of my name, for they
do not know the one who sent me. 22If I had
not come and spoken to them, they w
ould
not be g uilty of sin; but now they have no ex
cuse for t heir sin. 23Whoever hates me hates
my Fat her as well. 24If I had not done a mong
them the works no one else did, they would
not be g uilty of sin. As it is, they have seen,
and yet they have hated both me and my Fa
ther. 25But this is to fulf ill what is written in
t heir Law: They hated me without reason.c

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26When the Ad
voc ate c omes, whom I
will send to you from the Fat hert he Spirit
of t ruth who goes out from the Fat herhe
will test i f y about me. 27And you also must
test if y, for you have been with me from the
beg inn ing.
All this I have told you so that you
will not fall away. 2They will put you
out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is com
ing when anyone who kills you will t hink
they are offeri ng a serv ice to God. 3They will
do such t hings because they have not k nown
the Fat her or me. 4I have told you this, so that
when t heir time comes you will remember
that I warned you about them. I did not tell
you this from the beg inn ing because I was
with you, 5but now I am going to him who
sent me. None of you asks me, Where are
you goi ng? 6Rather, you are f illed with g rief

because I have said t hese t hings. 7But very

truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am
goi ng away. Unless I go away, the Advocate
will not come to you; but if I go, I will send
him to you. 8When he c omes, he will prove
the world to be in the w rong a bout sin and
righteousness and judgment: 9about sin, be
cause people do not believe in me; 10about
righteousness, because I am goi ng to the Fa
ther, where you can see me no longer; 11and
about judgment, because the prince of this
world now stands condemned.
12I have much more to say to you, more
than you can now bear. 13But when he, the
Spirit of t ruth, comes, he will g uide you into
all the t ruth. He will not speak on his own;
he will speak only what he hears, and he will
tell you what is yet to come. 14He will glor if y
me because it is from me that he will receive
what he will make k nown to you. 15All that
belongs to the Fat her is mine. That is why I
said the Spirit will receive from me what he
will make k nown to you.

The Disciples Grief Will Turn toJoy

16Jesus went on to say, In a litt le w
hile
you will see me no more, and then after a lit
tle w
hile you will seeme.
17At this, some of his disc iples said to one
another, What does he mean by sayi ng, In
a litt le w hile you will see me no more, and
then after a litt le while you will see me, and
Because I am goi ng to the Fat her? 18They
kept aski ng, What does he mean by a lit

hile? We d

sayi ng.
19Jesus saw that they wante d to ask him
about this, so he said to them, Are you ask
ing one another what I meant when I said,
In a litt le w hile you will see me no more,
and then after a litt le while you will see me?
20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and
mourn w

cause her time has come; but when her baby
is born she forgets the ang uish bec ause of
her joy that a c hild is born into the world.
22So with you: Now is your time of g rief, but
I will see you again and you will rejoice, and
no one will take away your joy. 23In that day
you will no longer ask me anything. Very
truly I tell you, my Fat her will give you what

John 17:6 1096

ever you ask in my name. 24Unt il now you
have not a sked for anyt hing in my name.
Ask and you will receive, and your joy will
be complete.
25Though I have been speaking figu r a
tively, a time is comi ng when I will no lon
ger use this kind of lang uage but will tell you
plain ly about my Fat her. 26In that day you
will ask in my name. I am not sayi ng that I
will ask the Fat her on your behalf. 27No, the
Fat her himself loves you because you have
loved me and have bel ieved that I came from
God. 28I came from the Fat her and entered
the world; now I am leaving the world and
goi ng back to the Fat her.
29Then
Jesus disc iples said, Now you
are speaki ng clearly and without figu res of
speech. 30Now we can see that you know all
t hings and that you do not even need to have
anyone ask you quest ions. This m
akes us be
lieve that you came from God.
31Do you now be
l ieve? Jesus replied.
32A time is coming and in fact has come
when you will be scattered, each to your own
home. You will leave me all a lone. Yet I am
not a lone, for my Fat her is withme.
33I have told you t hese t hings, so that in
me you may have peace. In this world you
will have trouble. But take heart! I have over
come the world.

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17

After Jesus said this, he looked to

ward heaven and prayed:

Fat her, the hour has come. Glor i

fy your Son, that your Son may glor if y
you. 2For you grante d him authori

11I will rem ain in the w

Jesus Arrested

18

When he had finished prayi ng, Jesus

left with his disc iples and c rossed
the Kidron Valley. On the other side t here
was a garden, and he and his disciples went
intoit.
2Now Judas, who bet rayed him, knew the
place, bec ause Jesus had often met there
with his disciples. 3So Judas came to the gar
den, guiding a det achment of sold iers and
some off icials from the chief priests and the
Pharisees. They were carr yi ng torches, lan
terns and weapons.
4Jesus, knowi ng all that was goi ng to hap
pen to him, went out and asked them, Who
is it you want?
5Jesus of Naza reth, they replied.
I am he, J esus said. (And Judas the trai
tor was standing t here with them.) 6When
Jesus said, I am he, they drew back and fell
to the ground.
7Again he
a sked them, Who is it you
want?
Jesus of Naza reth, they said.
8Jesus ans wered, I told you that I am he.

DEVOTIONS

THE ONE WHO PRAYS FOR YOU

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me
through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me
and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you
have sent me.
John 17:2021

o you know J esus has prayed for you? Its true.

The Savior of the world prayed for you.
As J esus was nearing the end of his time
on earth, he prayed for his disciples. These men had
spent three years with J esus. He must have felt very close
to them.
During some of his final days on earth, J esus prayed
that God would keep these men safe and help them to have unity as
they spread the good news. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your
name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one (vs. 11).
He also prayed that God would sanctify them, or make them holy, by the
truth.
But Jesus didnt just pray for his disciples. If you believe J esus died for
your sins, he was praying for you too. Pay attention to his prayer for you.
Jesus prayed that you would be unifiedor on the same teamwith other
believers and connected to God in a way that points others to him.
Before you were ever born, J esus knew that you would be one of his
followers. And he still prays for you (Hebrews 7:25). Remember that when
times get tough.

12Then the detachment of sold iers with

its commander and the Jewish off ic ials ar
rested Jesus. They bound him 13and brought
him f irst to Annas, who was the fat her-inlaw of Caiaphas, the high p
riest that year.
14Caiaphas was the one who had adv ised the
Jewish leaders that it w
ould be good if one
man died for the people.

Peters First Denial

15Si mon Peter and another disc iple were
fol low i ng Jesus. Bec ause this disc iple was
k nown to the high p
riest, he went with J esus
into the high priests courtyard, 16but Peter
had to wait outside at the door. The other
disciple, who was k nown to the high p
riest,
came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty
t here and brought Peterin.
17You a rent one of this m ans disc iples
too, are you? she a sked Peter.
He replied, I am not.
18It was cold, and the serv ants and off i
cials stood a round a fire they had made to
keep warm. Peter also was standing with
them, warmi ng himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19Meanw hile, the high priest quest ioned
Jesus a bout his disciples and his teachi ng.
20I have spo
ken openly to the w
orld,
Jesus replied. I always taught in synagogues
or at the temple, where all the Jews come to
gether. I said nothi ng in secret. 21Why ques
tion me? Ask those who heard me. Surely
they know what I said.
22When Jesus said this, one of the offi
cials nearby s lapped him in the face. Is this
the way you answer the high priest? he de
manded.
23If I said somet hing w rong, Jesus re
plied, test if y as to what is w rong. But if I
spoke the truth, why did you s trike me?
24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas
the high priest.

Peters Second and Third Denials

25Meanw hile, Simon Peter was still stand
ing t here warming himself. So they a sked
him, You a rent one of his disciples too, are
you?
He den ied it, sayi ng, I am not.
26One of the high priests serv ants, a rela

challenged him, Didnt I see you with him

in the garden? 27Again Peter den ied it, and

at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Jesus Before Pilate

28Then the Jewish leaders took J esus from
Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman gov
ernor. By now it was early morni ng, and to
avoid ceremon ia l unclean ness they did not
enter the palace, because they wanted to be
able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came out
to them and asked, What charges are you
bringi ng against this man?
30If he were not a crimi nal, they replied,
we would not have hande d him over to
you.
31Pilate said, Take him yours elves and
judge him by your own law.
But we have no r ight to execute anyone,
they objected. 32This took p
lace to fulfill
what Jesus had said about the kind of death
he was goi ng to die.
33Pilate then went back inside the palace,
summoned J esus and asked him, Are you
the king of the Jews?
34Is that your own idea, Jesus a sked, or
did others talk to you a boutme?
35AmI a Jew? Pilate replied. Your own
people and c hief p
riests handed you over to
me. What is it you have done?
36Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this
world. If it were, my servants would f ight to
prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But
now my kingdom is from another place.
37You are a king, then! said Pilate.
Jesus answered, You say that I am a king.
In fact, the reason I was born and came into
the w
orld is to test if y to the t ruth. Everyone
on the side of t ruth listens tome.
38What is t ruth? retorte d Pilate. With
this he went out again to the Jews gathered
t here and said, I find no basis for a charge
against him. 39But it is your custom for me
to release to you one prisoner at the time of
the Passover. Do you want me to release the
king of the Jews?
40They shoute d back, No, not him! Give
us Barabbas! Now Barabbas had taken part
in an upr isi ng.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified

19

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him

f logged. 2The sold iers twisted togeth
er a crown of t horns and put it on his head.
They clothed him in a purple robe 3and went

up to him again and again, saying, Hail,

king of the Jews! And they s lapped him in
the face.
4Once more Pilate came out and said to
the Jews gathered there, Look, I am bring
ing him out to you to let you know that I find
no basis for a c harge against him. 5When
Jesus came out weari ng the c rown of t horns
and the purple robe, Pilate said to them,
Here is the man!
6As soon as the c
hief p
riests and t heir of
ficials saw him, they shouted, Crucif y! Cru
cif y!
But Pilate ans wered, You take him and
crucif y him. As for me, I find no basis for a
charge against him.
7The Jewi sh leaders insisted, We have a
law, and accordi ng to that law he must die,
because he c laimed to be the Son of God.
8When Pi
l ate h
eard this, he was even
more a fraid, 9and he went back inside the
palace. Where do you come from? he
asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no ans wer.
10Do you refuse to speak to me? Pilate said.
Dont you rea li ze I have power eit her to free
you or to crucif y you?
11Jesus an
s wered, You would have no
power over me if it were not given to you
from a bove. Therefore the one who handed
me over to you is g uilty of a greater sin.
12From then on, Pilate t ried to set Jesus
free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting,
If you let this man go, you are no f riend of
Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king op
poses Caesar.
13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus
out and sat down on the judges seat at a place
k nown as the Stone Pavement (which in Ara
maic is Gabbat ha). 14It was the day of Prepa
rat ion of the Passover; it was a bout noon.
Here is your king, Pilate said to the Jews.
15But they shouted, Take him away! Take
him away! Crucif y him!
Shall I crucif y your king? Pilate asked.
We have no king but Caesar, the chief
priests answered.
16Finally Pilate handed him over to them
to be crucif ied.

The Crucifixion ofJesus

So the sold iers took c harge of Jesus. 17Car
ryi ng his own cross, he went out to the place

of the Skull (which in Ara maic is called Gol

got ha). 18There they crucif ied him, and with
him two othersone on each side and Jesus
in the midd le.
19Pilate had a notice prepared and fas
tened to the c ross. It read: j esus of naz a
reth, the king of the jews. 20Many of the
Jews read this sign, for the p
lace w
here Jesus
was crucif ied was near the city, and the sign
was writ ten in Ara ma ic, Lat i n and Greek.
21The c hief priests of the Jews proteste d to
Pilate, Do not w rite The King of the Jews,
but that this man claimed to be king of the
Jews.
22Pilate ans wered, What I have written, I
have written.
23When the sold iers cruc if ied J esus, they
took his c lothes, div iding them into four
shares, one for each of them, with the un
dergarment remaini ng. This garment was
seamless, woven in one piece from top to
bottom.
24Lets not tear it, they said to one anoth
er. Lets decide by lot who will getit.
This happened that the script ure m
ight
be fulf illed that said,
They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.a
So this is what the sold iers did.
25Near the c
ross of J esus s tood his moth
er, his mothers sister, Mary the wife of Clo
pas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw
his mother t here, and the disciple whom he
loved standi ng nearby, he said to her, Wom
an,b here is your son, 27and to the disciple,
Here is your mother. From that time on,
this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus

28Later, knowi ng that everyt hing had now
been finished, and so that Script ure would
be fulf illed, Jesus said, I am t hirsty. 29A jar
of wine vinegar was t here, so they s oaked
a sponge in it, put the s ponge on a s talk of
the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus lips.
30When he had re

said, It is finished. With that, he b

31Now it was the day of Prepa r at ion, and

bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath,

they a sked Pilate to have the legs broken and
the bodies taken down. 32The sold iers there
fore came and b
roke the legs of the f irst man
who had been crucif ied with Jesus, and then
t hose of the other. 33But when they came to
Jesus and found that he was already dead,
they did not b
reak his legs. 34Instead, one of
the sold iers p

bringi ng a sudden flow of blood and water.
35The man who saw it has given test imony,
and his test imony is true. He k nows that he

so that the script ure would be fulf illed: Not

another script ure says, They will look on

The Burial of Jesus

38Later, Joseph of Ar i m at hea a sked Pi late

for the body of J esus. Now Joseph was a dis

ciple of J esus, but secretly because he f eared
the Jew ish leaders. With Pi lates per m ission,
he came and took the body away. 39He was
accompa n ied by Nicodemus, the man who
earl ier had visited Jesus at n ight. Nicode
mus b
rought a mixt ure of myrrh and aloes,
about sevent y-five pounds. c 40Tak i ng Jesus
body, the two of them w
rapped it, with the
spices, in strips of linen. This was in accor
dance with Jewish buria l customs. 41At the
place w here Jesus was cruc i f ied, t here was
a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in
which no one had ever been laid. 42Because
it was the Jewish day of Prepa r ation and
since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus
there.

The Empty Tomb

20

Early on the first day of the week,

w hile it was still dark, Mary Mag
dalene went to the tomb and saw that the
stone had been removed from the ent rance.
2So she came runn ing to Simon Peter and
the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and
said, They have taken the Lord out of the
tomb, and we d
ont know w
here they have
put him!
3So Peter and the other disc iple starte d
for the tomb. 4Both were runn ing, but the
other disciple outran Peter and reached the

tomb f irst. 5He bent over and looked in at

the s trips of linen lyi ng t here but did not go
in. 6Then Simon Peter came a long beh ind
him and went straight into the tomb. He
saw the s trips of linen lying t here, 7as well
as the c loth that had been w
rapped a round
Jesus head. The c loth was s till lying in its
place, sepa rate from the linen. 8Finally the
other disc iple, who had reached the tomb
f irst, also went inside. He saw and bel ieved.
9(They still did not understand from Scrip
ture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10Then the disc iples went back to w
here they
were stay i ng.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11Now

Mary s tood outside the tomb cry

ing. As she wept, she bent over to look into
the tomb 12and saw two angels in w
hite,
seated w here Jesus body had been, one at
the head and the other at the foot.
13They a sked her, Woma n, why are you
cry i ng?
They have taken my Lord away, she said,
and I d
ont know where they have put him.
14At this, she t urned a
round and saw J esus
standi ng t here, but she did not rea li ze that
it was J esus.
15He a
sked her, Woma n, why are you cry
ing? Who is it you are looki ng for?
Thinking he was the gardener, she said,
Sir, if you have carr ied him away, tell me
where you have put him, and I will get him.
16Jesus said to her, Mary.
She t urned toward him and c ried out in Ar
amaic, Rabboni! (which means Teacher).
17Jesus said, Do not hold on to me, for I
have not yet ascended to the Fat her. Go in
stead to my brothers and tell them, I am as
cendi ng to my Fat her and your Fat her, to my
God and your God.
18Mary Magd alene went to the disc iples
with the news: I have seen the Lord! And
she told them that he had said t hese t hings
to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19On the even ing of that f irst day of the
week, when the disc iples were together,
with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish
leaders, Jesus came and s tood a mong them
and said, Peace be with you! 20After he said

The disciples were overjoyed when they saw

21Again Jesus said, Peace be with you!

and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24Now Thom
a s (also k nown as Didy
welve, was not with the
musa), one of the T
disc iples when Jesus came. 25So the other
disciples told him, We have seen the Lord!
But he said to them, Unless I see the nail
marks in his hands and put my finger where
the n
ails were, and put my hand into his side,
I will not bel ieve.
26A week later his disc iples were in the
house again, and Thoma s was with them.
T hough the d

and s tood a mong them and said, Peace
be with you! 27Then he said to Thoma s,
Put your finger here; see my h

28Thoma s said to him, My Lord and my
God!
29Then J esus told him, Bec ause you have
seen me, you have believed; blessed are
t hose who have not seen and yet have be

The Purpose of JohnsGospel

30Jesus performed many other s
igns in the
presence of his disciples, which are not re
corded in this book. 31But t hese are written
that you may bel ieveb that J esus is the Messi

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch ofFish

21

Af ter w ard Jesus appeared again to

his disc iples, by the Sea of Gali lee.c
It happened this way: 2Simon Peter, Thomas
(also k nown as Didy mus a ), Nat hanael from
Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and
two other disciples were together. 3Im go
ing out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and
they said, Well go with you. So they went

out and got into the boat, but that n

ight they
caught nothi ng.
4Early in the morni ng, Jesus s
tood on the
shore, but the disciples did not rea li ze that
it was J esus.
5He c alled out to them, Friends, havent
you any fish?
No, they answered.
6He said, Throw your net on the r ight
side of the boat and you will find some.
When they did, they were unable to haul the
net in because of the l arge number of fish.
7Then the dis
c iple whom Jesus loved
said to Peter, It is the Lord! As soon as Si
mon Peter heard him say, It is the Lord,
he w
rapped his outer garment a round him
(for he had taken it off) and jumped into the
water. 8The other disc iples followed in the
boat, towi ng the net full of fish, for they were
not far from shore, about a hund red y ards.d
9When they landed, they saw a fire of burn
ing c oals there with fish on it, and some
bread.
10Jesus said to them, Bring some of the
fish you have just caught. 11So Simon Pe
ter climbed back into the boat and d ragged
the net a shore. It was full of large fish, 153,
but even with so many the net was not
torn. 12Jesus said to them, Come and have
breakfast. None of the disc iples dared ask
him, Who are you? They knew it was the
Lord. 13Jesus came, took the b
read and gave
it to them, and did the same with the fish.
14This was now the third time Jesus ap
peared to his disc iples after he was r aised
from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15When they had finished eating, Jesus
said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do
you love me more than these?
Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love
you.
Jesus said, Feed my lambs.
16Again J esus said, Simon son of John, do
you loveme?
He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I
love you.
Jesus said, Take care of my sheep.

f you could have any superpower, would you fly

over the ocean? Or maybe youd use your X-ray
vision to stop bad guys or transport yourself out
of class and into the pool. While most people know that
Jesus could heal, control the weather, and even come
back to life, they often dont realize another superpower
he used: walking through walls.
No open doors? No problem! J esus waltzed through the walls. He
had done it a week earlier (vs. 19). And this time he did it when Thomasa
disciple who had been absent for the first episodewas there. Thomas heart
must have sped up, guiltily remembering what he had said to his buddies
when they told him J esus was alive (vs. 2425). Yet J esus wasnt mad at
Thomas.
Guess what? Its okay to be like Doubting Thomas, as long as you bring
those doubts to the One with all the answers. God wont zap you with
lightning. In fact, he loves that youre thinking about him and trying to figure
out how he works. Try saying this to God: Im having a hard time believing
this actually happened, Lord or Im not really understanding why this other
thing happened. Could you help me see?
Jesus still speaks, even when we pull a Thomas and have doubts. J esus
wants to hear about your doubts, and he cares about what you have to say. He
wants to prove his power to you. Will you let him?

or all the wonders the disciples had witnessed

during their three years with J esus, nothing
could compare to the intense days surrounding
his death. They felt deep sadness and confusion at
the crucifixion then wild joy and amazement at the
resurrection. Without J esus there on a daily basis, it was
hard to imagine what was next. What were they supposed
to do now?
Peter went back to his old job. With six other disciples, he climbed in a
boat, went out on the water and put out the fishing net. Hours later, they
hadnt caught a thingbut then J esus showed up. From the beach he told
the disciples in the boat to cast out the net again. Fish filled up the net! When
they brought the bounty to the beach, J esus met them. He made a meal for his
followers.
On the beach, J esus asked Peter about his love. J esus knew Peters heart,
yet he asked Peter three times to give him a chance to declare his love. J esus
wanted Peter to know that he was fully forgiven. Completely forgiven, Peter
was free to do what Christ called him to next. Then J esus talked to Peter about
how to follow in his footstepswith service. Like casting out nets for fish, the
disciples could cast out nets to welcome in children of God.
We can follow Peters example of listening to Jesus voice and serving
others. Listening to J esus always sets us freefree to serve.
