OVERVIEW OF NC HILLEL
Welcome
This report is filled with stories and photos from our students
adventures at home and abroad. Their personal reflections are the best
way to show just how much your generosity means to our students,
who can always count on a home away from home at Hillel.

Were proud to have something for everyone here. All students are
welcome, regardless of their family or educational background or
level of religious observance. Facilitating a vibrant Jewish campus life
that fits every students interests and potential is our mission at North
Carolina Hillel.
Parents, alumni and friends in the community like you make all of this
work possible. Thank you for your partnership and commitment to our
Jewish students and our Jewish future.
With gratitude,
Erin Rosen

Jewish life at
UNC-Chapel Hill
Jewish life at Carolina is vibrant and thriving.
A board of talented student leaders, supported
by four full-time professional program staff
members, plans a variety of programs, social
events and rsum-building leadership
opportunities each semester.
From holiday parties to hamentaschen
baking to the meaningful Ask Big Questions
conversation series, Jewish Tar Heels can
explore their values and identities in their own
unique ways through UNC Hillel.
Along the way, they find a home on campus,
forming lifelong friendships and building a
strong and impactful community.

Experiencing
Birthright Israel
BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL
Each year, North Carolina Hillel sends 80-120 students on a free, once-in-a-lifetime, 10-day
trip to Israel through Birthright Israel. Each bus of 40 students is composed of students from
campuses across North Carolina as well as eight Israeli peers.
The trip is a whirlwind journey throughout the country, and students have the opportunity to
tour ancient synagogues, explore the Old City of Jerusalem and hip Tel Aviv, float in the Dead Sea,
hike the Golan Heights and much, much more.
Though the trip is exhausting, students return with a deeper sense of Jewish identity and
connection to Israel and theyve made a new, tight-knit group of North Carolina Jewish friends.

Israel on campus
North Carolina Hillel students are committed to exploring their relationships with Israel even when
theyre not traveling on Birthright Israel trips or returning to the country for internships or study abroad.
We were happy to welcome Itay Asaf, who grew up on a kibbutz in the north of the country
and served in the Israeli Defense Forces, as NC Hillels fourth Israel Fellow through a partnership
with the Jewish Agency for Israel. Itay speaks to students across the state about the conflict and
his personal experiences in Israel, working especially closely with students interested in regional
politics to serve as a resource for campus conversations about Israel.
As a sports enthusiast and former basketball coach, Itay has also enjoyed leading a team of
students to compete in the National Hillel Basketball Tournament, and he has hosted weekly
classes to teach students krav maga, the Israeli martial art.

Of blessed memory
NC Hillel would be a
shadow of what it is today
without the bold leadership
and remarkable support of
Leonard Kaplan, zichrono
lvracha may his memory
be for a blessing and his
beloved wife, Tobee. They
have been NC Hillels most
generous supporters for
over 20 years; they both
have a deep love for the
Jewish community and care immensely about
Jewish youth. Leonard and Tobees profound
dedication to the Jewish people is evident in the
values of their children, Randall and Kathy, Lyn and
Barry, and Scott and Maeve.
Leonard was kind, gentle and humble; he was a
philanthropic visionary, a leader and a mensch. He
was one of a kind, and we will miss him greatly.

North Carolina Hillel provides students at North Carolinas public universities with opportunities to strengthen their
Jewish identities. We do this by creating community; inspiring social justice and intellectual and spiritual growth;
and deepening student connections to the Jewish people and the world.
