Mrs. Shakuntala Bhagat was born in February 1933 to an illustrious family of Bridge Engineers
namely Shri. S.B. Joshi, who is known as Father of Bridge Engineering in India.
She graduated in Civil Engineering from VJTI, Bombay University in 1953, as the First
Woman Civil Engineer in India. She did her Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from
University of Pennsylvania, in 1964. She had two years of practical training in
West Germany, and UK from 1954 to 1956.
She got married to a dynamic and innovative Mechanical Engineer Shri Anirudha Bhagat
Mrs. Bhagat worked from 1960 to 1970 as Assistant Prof. - Civil Engineering in I.I.T Bombay.
Since then she is designing several, over 200, Quadricon (Prefabricated modular bridges for roads-highwaysrailways, the only system in the world) Steel bridges of spans ranging from 18m to 138m.
She also developed the concept of designing Bhagat Unishear Connectors through 11 types of prototypes,
perfected through applications.

She has developed formula for designing any capacity of Bhagat

Unishear Connector from 20T to 500T in tension and upto 100%
additional capacity when used in compression. Unishear connectors
designed and manufactured using these formulae have infinite fatigue
life when dynamic load range is upto 50% of tension capacity which is
common in permanent bridge superstructures.
In 1974 Mr. Anirudha & Mrs Shakuntala Bhagat received highest award
for their invention Unishear Connectors from NRDO.
In 1993 She won "Woman Engineer of the Year Award"

famous Gods of Hindu religion, Bhagwan Krishna, on the
eighth day (Ashtami) in the month of Sravana or Savana.
