ASME PCC-2 Repair Guide for Tyfo SCH-Mark V and Tyfo SCH-41
This document is meant to act as a quick guide for structural repair of a specific grade of pipe using
carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). These tables correlate to API 5L X42 grade pipe which has a
yield strength of 42 ksi (290 MPa) and tensile strength of 60 ksi (414 MPa). For simplicity, the pressure
used to calculate repair thickness is based on the maximum allowable working pressure. With this
assumption, diameter can be canceled out of the equation without impacting the design per ASME PCC2. The certification testing handled by Stress Engineering Services qualified the use of the Tyfo SCH
Systems. These tests in combination with equations 11 and 12 in Article 4.1 section 3.4.5 in ASME PCC-22015 were used to make the following table and graph showing the required number of layers of varying
materials, varying steel thicknesses and varying corrosion levels. ASME PCC-2 qualification testing has
certification up to 20 years. However, the composite system has capabilities well beyond 20 years as
shown with accelerated aging using Arrhenius Modeling and sustained loading. Table 1 reports relevant
composite material properties when designing for 50-years, 20 years and 5 years. Table 2 tabulates the
required number of layers of the Tyfo SCH-Mark V system for varying pipe wall thicknesses and
corrosion depths of X42 grade steel pipelines for a 20 year design. The following figures display the
required number of layers for reinforcing X42 grade steel pipe with varying levels of corrosion for both
Tyfo SCH-Mark V and Tyfo SCH-41. Figure 1 and 2 chart the required number of layers for 20 and 5 year
designs, respectively.

General Note:
This document is meant to be a quick guide and all calculations should be reviewed by a licensed
engineer prior to implementation. The actual design pressure if lower than the maximum allowable
design pressure based on 72% SMYS may require less than the required number of layers as listed in the
table and figures above.
