Optical Communications Consultant (OC-C)

A. Introduction

D. Prerequisites

The OC-C course is a five-day course that covers the design

Required prerequisites include the following:

process for optical networks. This course provides students

>> Must hold current certification as an optical

with practical experience in designing OC networks through

communications associate via successful completion

case-based exercises and subject matter expert reviews.

of the OC-A course and passing the OC-A exam

The OC-C course develops the analytic skills required for

designing OC solutions.

Recommended prerequisites include the following:

>> 1 to 3 years technical experience in a networking or

telecommunications environment

B. Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students should
be able to:
>> Analyze the process of optical design and

methodology
>> Understand the concepts of optical link lngineering
>> Define an OC network design with:
>> A set of service definitions that will support the

requirements of optical network applications

>> An optical network transport solution to support

service definitions
>> The physical infrastructure to support the optical

transport design
>> Plans for network commissioning and service

verification
>> Initial requirements for DCN, management, and rollout

scenarios
>> Present an OC network solution in a design review

scenario

E. Completion And Post-Course

Examination
There is an online, post-course examination associated with
this course. The duration of the exam is 2 hours, and the
exam is administered separately from the training course.
Students taking the Optical Communications Consultant
training have two options for completion:
>> The student opts to receive a Certificate of

Completion and is, therefore, not required to

complete the examination.
>> The student completes the examination with a passing

grade and is awarded an Optical Communications

Consultant certificate. (Please note: It is expected
that the student will complete the post-course
examination within 30 days of completing the course.
If the time period between course completion and
post-course examination exceeds 30 days, or should
the student need to re-take the examination, an
additional cost applies.)

C. Conditions
Class conditions include the following:
>> There is a maximum class size of 12 students.
>> Lectures take place in a classroom using projector

displays.
>> Class and student exercises are conducted in the

classroom.
>> Class time balance is: (approximately) 50% formal

presentation and 50% class exercises.

F. Time
The scheduled time for this training course is 5 days.

G. Course Outline
Module 0: INTRODUCTION

H. Student Exercises
The following exercises prepare the student to support
optical network design scenarios:
>> Exercise 1 TDM Traffic Planning Exercise
Student allocates TDM bandwidth to support

electrical legacy and Ethernet traffic types over a

SONET/SDH infrastructure.
>> Exercise 2 Service Design Planning Exercise
Students will explore client/line-protected optical

spans, optical splitting, and protection protocols.

>> Exercise 3 DWDM Band Planning Exercise
Student will perform ITU grid selection and apply

to physical locations and client signals required at

sites to plan band/OMX equipment. Students will
consider the implications to their decisions as they
apply to cost and complexity.
>> Exercise 4 Link Engineering Exercise
Students will perform link engineering calculations

on an example unamplified optical topology.

>> Exercise 5 Link Engineering Planning Tool Exercise
Student performs a link engineering to support an

amplified network topology using an automated link

engineering tool.
