DELPHOS The end of 2015
is near and as usual, The Herald
has compiled the most notable
stories from the year. Here is the
third of four installments of the
2015 Year-end Wrap Up.
July
July 1
Rain and flooding cut the
annual Great American Bicycle
Adventure short. Cyclists fought
torrential rain and water-covered roadways to get to the Fort
Jennings American Legion Post
to grab a bite to eat and hop
a bus to the Van Wert County
Fairgrounds, where the ride was
supposed to end hours later.
Record rainfall in June
wreaked havoc on area fields
leaving some still under water
and more permanently damaged
by standing water. An area just
south of Van Wert received 14.72
inches in June, not including
what was received on June 30.
Lima received 12.45, more than
8.5 inches above average. Putnam
County had an average of 9.62
inches.
Struggling to meet an increasing need for their services, representatives of the four agencies serving senior citizens

approached Allen County commissioners with a plan to increase

funding by combining existing
.5-mill and .3-mill levies into a
single, 5-year, 1-mill levy.
July 4
Best and biggest in our 10-year
history was how Kiwanis members described the 2015 Fourth
of July Celebration at Stadium
Park. The group added an additional night of events including
a Nashville Crush concert and
Beermaster Tour by Budweiser.
July 6
Flooding throughout the area
left more than mud and dead
crops in its wake, it also led to
an increase in the mosquito population. The Ohio Department of
Health reported more mosquito
activity than it had seen in years.
July 11
Three World War II veterans
related their war efforts during a
roundtable event at the Delphos
Canal Commission. Harold
Liebrecht, Burl Morris and Art
Grothouse spoke with pride of
their service and a role in a necessary war.
July 12
Delphos City Council approved
the first phase of the wastewater
treatment plant reconstruction,
including $1,006,000 to install
new technology in one train at the
plant for a pilot project.

July 16
Members of St. Johns High
School football team participated in Seminarian Anthony
Cocis Being a Man for Others:
Following the Example of
Jesus Christ. The young mens
mini-retreat included trash pickup in downtown Delphos.
July 17
East Cleveland Street resident
David Wollenhaupt got a surprise
when he returned home to find a
large sinkhole in his front yard.
Wollenhaupt said the sinkhole
continued to grow throughout the
morning. Safety Service Director
Shane Coleman said the city
had been investigating a leak on
Wollenhaupts street for several
weeks.
July 18
Sixty-one young anglers
converged on the Coon and
Sportsmans Club, pulling more
than 70 fish from its quarry. Everyone received a prize,
including Phoenix Tucker and
Emma Cooley, who won bicycles
for the biggest fish.
July 19

Despite gray skies, it was a

packed house at the Immaculate
Conception Parish Festival.
Raffles, games, music, a kids
tractor pull and, best of all, food
topped the highlights of the annual
event to raise funds for the church.
July 20
The new scoreboard was erected at the football field at Stadium
Park.
July 23
Allen County commissioners
approved the senior citizen levy
increase request to appear on
the November General Election
Ballot.
Columbus Grove School
District announced a new
drug-testing policy affecting its
student body. The district would
begin randomly testing students
in grades 7-12 participating in
extracurricular activities.
July 27
Jennifer A. Edelbrock, Kalida,
pleaded guilty for embezzling
$17,250 from the Kalida Band
Boosters in Putnam County
Court. In a deal struck with the
court, Edelbrock avoided a pris-

on sentence by making full restitution within 30 days and was

placed on community control.
July 29
Jefferson
Competition
Cheerleaders announced they
would host their first competition on Aug. 1 on The Stage at
Jefferson Middle School.
August
Aug. 1
An $18,000 donation from
the Mueller-Scherger Foundation
sought by the Delphos Stadium
Club provided matching funds
for the $22,007 Natureworks
Grant awarded to the city earlier in 2015. The result will be
$40,000 worth of improvements
to the walking path on top of the
Delphos/Gillmor Reservoir.
The Delphos Canal Days
Committee announced tethered
balloon rides would be offered
during Canal Days in September.

East Cleveland Street resident David Wollenhaupt came home to a large sinkhole in his front yard on July
17. An undiscovered leak in a storm line caused the cave-in.

in Cloverdale. Members of St.

special anointing of the altar.
Over two years ago, the church
was destroyed by a tornado on
Nov. 17, 2013. After meeting in
the parish hall for two years, the
members held their first service
in the new church with Bishop
Daniel Thomas reopening the
doors of the church.
We have been looking forward to this day for two years,
said Rev. Jerry Schetter, pastor of
the church.
Bishop Thomas said it was

a tremendous delight to be part

of both the groundbreaking and
dedication.
Your faith has produced this
wonderful new temple of the
Lord, Bishop Thomas told the
congregation.
Rev. Schetter told the members
as a parish family weve grown
in love and in relationships. He
thanked everyone for everything
they had done.
St, Barbara Catholic Church is
the only church in Cloverdale. It
has a membership of about 325.
Mayor Judd Spencer said the
church is an important part of the
community.
If they hadnt rebuilt the
church, Im afraid it would have
been the beginning of the end of
Cloverdale, Spencer said. He is
a member of the church.

Spencer said the communitys

population is now down to 147
residents.
We lost some households
in the tornado, he said. Many
members of the church are from
the rural area.
Rev. Schetter said they were
fortunate to have insurance and
donations cover the $1.7 million
cost to rebuild the church.
The parish also had many volunteers who did an outstanding
job using their abilities to help
accomplish this new church,
Rev. Schetter said.
One item that was saved from
the former church to be part of
the new church was the tabernacle.
It was buried under 3,000
pounds of stones, brick and
rubble after the tornado, Rev.

County unemployment rates

show slight rises across state
BY ED GEBERT
DHI Media Editor
egebert@timesbulletin.com

VAN WERT Statistics released Tuesday

showed a break in the downward slide of Van
Wert Countys unemployment rate. A rate which
had slipped to 3.5 percent in October, rose
slightly to 3.9 percent in November 2015. Labor
force estimates showed the number of unemployed had increased from 500 in October to
600 in the November report released by the Ohio
Department of Job and Family Services through
cooperation with the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
U.S. Department of Labor.
The number of unemployed shown was down
from 14,000 in October to 13,800 in November.
The 3.9-percent rate tied Van Wert County for the
71st-highest count rate in Ohio, up slightly from
being tied for the 76th-highest rate in the October
report. The county rate is still down from the
rate one year ago, which was 4.2 percent, and
the county rate two years ago, which was 6.3

percent. Six years ago, the unemployment rate in

Van Wert County was 14.2 percent.
County rates were up slightly all over the
region also. The rate in Allen County was up
from Octobers 4.0 percent to Novembers 4.4
percent. Rates rose in Auglaize County from
3.1 to 3.5 percent, and in Paulding County from
4.0 to 4.6 percent. In Putnam County, the rate
went from 3.2 percent in October to 3.5 percent
in November, and in Mercer County the states
lowest county rate in October at 2.8 percent rose
to 3.1 percent in November.
Overall, across Ohio, rates increased in 81 of
the states 88 counties and declined in just six
counties for November. The lowest county rate
in the state now belongs to Geauga and Medina
counties, who each were at 3.0 percent. The highest county rate in the state was in Monroe County
at 9.7 percent. The second-highest was Noble
County at 7.4 percent, tied with Meigs County.
The Ohio unemployment rate for November
was a 4.5 percent. The labor force participation
rate was 62.4 percent.

Schetter said. But the firemen

dug it out and we had it repaired
and refinished.
The stained glass windows
in the church represent the four
mysteries of the Rosary. There is
also a window with St. Barbara
and another with St. Isidore, the
Saint of Farmers.
The mural behind Jesus on
the cross was painted by Oscar
Velasquez.
Although the groundbreaking for the church was held last
November, rained forced the
actual construction of the new
church to April 1.
Its like a healing process,
Rev. Schetter said of the rebuilding. When you lose something
you have to move on from that
loss. He said throughout the
rebuilding process the church
family grew back together again.
Special parts of the dedication Mass included the rites of
anointing, incensing, covering
and lighting the altar. The service
also included the inauguration of
the tabernacle.
Mayor Spencer said Cloverdale
is still rebuilding following the
EF2 tornado that went through

the village two years ago. He said

they are still working on rebuilding much of its housing and also
working on putting in street lighting, a plan that had started before
the tornado struck.
The community building,
damaged in the tornado, was
rebuilt to continue to serve as
a storm shelter for residents in
Cloverdale. We lowered the roof
after the storm, Spencer added.
Following the service, members gathered in the parish hall
for a reception.

Unnecessary Farce opens Jan. 21

Information submitted
VAN WERT The Van Wert Civic
Theater is currently rehearsing for
their next production, Unnecessary
Farce. Unnecessary Farce is an award
winning stage comedy written by
Paul Slade Smith that combines all
the elements of classic farce with a
contemporary American plot. Set in
an economy motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with
his female accountant. But shhhhh, in
the room next door are two undercover cops who are supposed to catch the
meeting on videotape.
Of course this is a comedy and yes
theres some confusion as to whos
in which room, whos watching the
video, whos taken the money, whos
hired a hit man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes.
The cast of characters include:
Eric Sheridan, played by Steve
Lane; Billie Dwyer, played by Audra
Mohler; Karen Brown, played by
Amy McConn; Steve Bricker is to
be Mayor Meekly; Agent Frank is Ed
Eichler; Joe Maurer is Todd; and Mary
Meekly is played by Lisa Eichler.
In a review it was reported that,
The audience roared throughout the
100-minute, two-act international
hit. A lot of credit also went out
to writer, Smith, as he has written a
doozy of a door-slamming, mistaken-identity plot-shuffler.
Director Doug Groom and his
cast will string laughs together at a
machine-gun pace after all it is said
to be Two cops. Three crooks. Eight
doors. Go.
Unnecessary Farce will run Jan.
21, 22, 23 and 24; and Jan. 28, 29, 30
and 31. The Box Office at 118 S. Race
St., Van Wert, will open to the public
from 2-6 p.m. Monday through Friday
on Jan. 18. All tickets are $10. The

Gift exchange, school program, and

potluck accent Eicher family Christmas
BY LOVINA EICHER
I am already a day late
in writing this column.
December is going way too
fast for me! Christmas is
almost upon us.
Tonight is the elementary Christmas program
at our school. It is the last
Christmas program with one
of our children in it. Kevin
will be in middle school next
yeara fifth grader already!
Kevins class is having a gift
exchange, so he was excited
to take his wrapped gift this
morning. They dont have
a particular persons name.
Instead, the boys take a gift
for a boy and the girls take a
gift for a girl. This seems easier than keeping a secret from
their friends about whose
name they have.
We will have our
Christmas with our family
a day early, on December
24. Susans friend Moses
family is getting together on
Christmas day, so we decided
to have it a day earlier. Our
children dont have any complaints about getting their
gifts early!
Everyone will be here for
supper on December 23, and
then we give the gifts the
next morning. I usually make
a breakfast casserole the evening before so I can put it
in the oven to heat while
we open gifts. Such precious
memories we make on a day
like that. We need to take
time to remember and thank
God for sending Jesus Christ
as our Savior.
Our day is usually spent
enjoying our new gifts, play-

ing games, and just enjoying

being all together as a family.
Our loved ones who have
passed away always remain
in our hearts on days like this.
Our family, sister Emma,
Jacob and family, and sisters Verena and Susan always
exchange names every year.
We will get together on New
Years Day for a Christmas
dinner together. My parents always had our family
home on New Years Day
for breakfast and dinner and
snacks before everyone left.
Some of us would go the
evening before and spend the
night there. Since my extended family usually gets together in the summer months, it
is nice for us four sisters here
in Michigan to get together
around the holidays.
Our church on Sunday
will be at neighbors David
and Barb. We will have our
annual potluck dinner after
the Christmas services on
Sunday. I will take a tater tot
casserole. Sister Liz had this
recipe in our family cookbook that sisters Verena and
Susan put together. I have
made it a few times and the
Lovina and her daughters
children enjoy it.

Putting the spring back

in your pets step

BY BONNIE JONES, DVM

Another year is coming to a
close, and I am reminded that I,
too, am another year older. While I
am blessed with excellent health in
my 30th year of practice, I am not
certain that many realize veterinary
medicine is a physically demanding
career.
Veterinarians and their staff
often spend long hours on their
feet. The nature of our job requires
a lot of bending, squatting and
kneeling to attend to our larger
and table-timid patients. Lifting
anesthetized or disabled pets and
restraining unwilling patients can
and does take its toll on ones back
as well. We also perform many
repetitive motion tasks which lead
to hand and wrist arthritis (she
states after performing 10 toenail
trims during a six-hour shift).
While some of us might feel
the discomfort of every day occupational aches and pains, I hurt
more for my arthritic patients who
experience chronic pain and suffer
in silence. Osteoarthritis, or inflammation of bones and joints, occurs
when cartilage lining the surface of
bones is damaged or absent. Since
cartilage acts like a shock absorber
in joints, when it is defective bones
begin to wear abnormally within
the joint, and they, too, become
misshapen and ultimately painful.
It is not a secret that I adore
senior pets, but even young pets
develop osteoarthritis. The joint
discomfort noted in younger dogs
and cats is often a sequela to congenital defects, athleticism, or injury. Common causes include obesity,
shoulder/hip dysplasia (malformation of ball and socket joints), torn
knee ligaments (ruptured anterior
cruciate ligaments or ACLs), or
unstable knees (medial patellar luxation).
Most multiple pet households
have at least one pet that is suffering quietly with osteoarthritis pain.
In my pet family, our two Border

collies have taken their jobs to

assist their shepherd quite seriously. Twelve year old, Robbie, still
puts in long days of watching her
mans back while keeping him
safe around the rams. She and her
nine year old brother, Jimmy, are
also a dutiful herding team, circling
wide and near, repeatedly, to move
the flock as a unit. These two herders love to work so an occasional
limp is sometimes observed.
Our low-riding Welsh Corgi,
Betsy Louise, is an athlete that
lives to play ball-y- so much
so, that she had to have knee surgery after she ruptured her ACL
when she was just two years old.
Now, if she has a full day of activity
or exerts herself, she may limp.
Pets with osteoarthritis show
their discomfort in varying ways.
Symptoms besides limping include
difficulty sitting or rising, stiffness,
reluctance to climb or jump, unusual irritability or aggression, vocalizing when touched, or licking/
chewing painful areas. Cats tend
to hide their discomfort more so,
but even they will demonstrate pain
by no longer seeking high perches,
sleeping on or near heating vents,
or resting in sun beams.
To further diagnose arthritis
in pets, veterinarians may recommend x-rays to visualize the shape
of bones and damage to joints.
Once diagnosed, oral non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs may be
prescribed, along with glucosamine
chondroitin supplements. The latter are nutritional powders, flavored chews or tablets (Nutramaxs
Cosequin or Dasuquin) that rebuild
cartilage on joint surfaces, thus
reducing inflammation.
Please be aware that not all glucosamine chondroitin supplements
are created equally! A large number
of human and pet supplements are
available; most are costly and not
all are fully utilized by the body.
Some pet foods such as Hills
Science Diet Healthy Mobility or
Prescription Diet J/D also contain

Dr. Bonnie Jones, DVM

glucosamine chondroitin. Be certain to seek your veterinarians

advice when selecting diets, joint
supplements and anti-inflammatory medications for your arthritic
four-legged family member, as pets
should never be given Tylenol, and
aspirin is not always a good choice
(especially for cats!).
Speaking of diet, obesity is a
major contributing factor for the
development of arthritis in pets.
If you own a Flabby-Labby or
Tubby-Tommy, please heed your
veterinarians recommendations
for weight reduction and exercise.
Even pets with joint pain can benefit from short periods of exercise,
especially low-impact walking,
jogging or swimming.
In addition, consider providing
heated and cushioned pet beds and
shallow litter pans for aging cats.
And, who doesnt love a good massage? Many pets will enjoy your
undivided attention during a personal massage of their sore joints.
Finally, please dont ignore your
pets subtle signs of discomfort!
Limping equals pain and should
never be considered normal or
tolerable. Resolve to put the spring
back in your pets step in the New
Year. Ask your veterinarian about
osteoarthritis treatment for your
pet.

El Nino

by JAMES HOORMAN
Ag Educator
OSU Extension, Putnam County
PUTNAM COUNTY While
Santa Claus and his reindeer may
not be happy, most people seem
to be enjoying the warmer winter
weather caused by El Nino. In an
El Nino year, warmer seawater
near the Pacific equator results in
a polar jet stream that generally
stays further north than normal and
a Pacific jet stream that remains in
the southern USA. With Ohio and
the Midwest positioned between the
two storm tracks, warmer and drier
conditions may develop during El
Nino events.
This pattern may bring above-normal temperatures to much of the
Midwest. This pattern does not mean
that cold weather will not happen
this winter but typical extreme cold
weather may be milder and less frequent. In addition, this pattern may
bring drier conditions to the eastern
portion of the Midwest, including
Ohio. Warmer conditions may also
reduce total snowfall and the frequency of heavy snowfall events
in our area. However, the lower
Midwest (Southern parts of Ohio,
Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri) may
have an increased risk of heavy
snow.
With the 2015-2016 El Nino is
shaping up to be a stronger than normal event, temperatures are expected to be 33 percent higher or 5-60 F
higher than average winter temperature with 33-40 percent lower precipitation expected in northern Ohio.
There is a 95 percent chance that
these conditions will last through the
winter, gradually weakening through
the spring 2016, according to the
Climate Prediction Center. Strong
El Ninos are often followed by
La Ninas which tend to be when
Ohio has a drought. When the cycle
will turn is not known, so the La
Nina and associated drier weather
may not occur for six months to two
years.
Each El Nino (Spanish for
small boy) and La Nina (Spanish
for small girl) is different, so weather conditions may vary. While the
current El Nino is expected to
be one of the strongest on record,
each El Nino episode is different.
The Arctic oscillation in 2009-2010
trumped the El Nino that year. El
Ninos are known NOT to impact
the following weather events: Does
NOT impact the potential for ice
storms or blizzards, does not impact
the track or intensity of any single
weather system or storm, does not
impact the first frost in the fall (early
or late) or the last frost in the spring
(early or late).

However, some impacts are

predictable for typical El Nino
years. Most appear to be beneficial to agriculture, although both
positive and negative conditions
may occur. Milder winter weather
could boost winter wheat, forage
crops, cover crops, and fruits like
apples and grapes. However, with
reduced snowpack in the Midwest,
these crops may be desiccated by
cold air and occasional harsh winter
winds. Milder winter temperatures
are beneficial for livestock producers by reducing feed costs and stress
on the animals but could result in
higher pests like insects, molds, and
fungus; especially in grain storage.
Most insects are harmed by variable
winter temperature extremes that
occur when they come out of hibernation or become active.
For the economy, mild and dry
winters with less than normal snowfall generally have significant overall positive impacts on the economy. The economic benefit of the
strong 1997-1998 El Nino, outweighed losses by a factor of 10
to 1. Reductions in home heating
costs and increases in retail sales,
home construction, and home sales
all benefit from the weather. On the
negative side, businesses that specialize in snow removal, collision
repair and towing, and winter recreation all suffer.
Since 1950s, strong El Ninos
are associated with a lower risk
of extreme precipitation and less
flooding, so for transportation; the
disruption in barge, rail, highway
traffic and airline delays is a big
factor in the northern Midwest. The
southern Midwest regions may not
benefit because the risk may actually
be higher for extreme events. The
expected overall decrease in snowfall could reduce costs for snow and
ice removal and salt purchases by
local government.
How should farmers adjust or
plan for planting crops next year?
Trying to predict a dry summer
could be dangerous. Farmers should
plan for a normal year. With a warmer and drier spring, farmers may be
tempted to start planting early but
should be careful in planting crops
too early since the occurrence of the
last frost in the spring is NOT related to El Nino events.

ROCKFORD Ten
schools sent a total of 90 wrestlers to Wednesdays actionpacked Parkway Holiday
Wrestling Tournament.
Findlay ran away with
the team championship with
205.83 points but it was a
close battle for second among
Elyria (129.00), Coldwater
(126.17), Parkway (123.50),
Celina (122.00) and Elida
(121.50).
It was a good day for the
host Panthers who picked up
championships at 120 (Reese
Fokine), 170 (Noah Joseph)
and 182A (Peyton Hamrick).
Each weight class was
contested on a round-robin
basis, each wrestler getting a
crack at every wrestler in his
class. If there were more than
six wrestlers in a class, that
group was divided into A and
B groups, because OHSAA
rules forbid a wrestler from
competing more than five
times in one day.
Fokine, a sophomore, was
dominant in all three of his
matches, including a 15-5
major decision, a 12-2 major
decision, and a second-round
pin. Joseph, a senior, pinned
all five of his opponents,
every one in the first round.
Hamrick, a senior, pinned all
three opponents, two in the
first round and one in the
second.
Delphos Jefferson shared
one title, that coming at 145A
where freshman Conner
Anspaugh tied with two
Coldwater Cavaliers, Zach
Meyers and Josh Fink, all
with 3-1 records. Anspaughs
wins came via decision (4-2),
forfeit, and pin. Fink, however, pinned Anspaugh at 3:28.

The Jeffcats got runner-up

finishes at 160A (sophomore
Dre Reed) and 182B (sophomore Matt Wiechart).
A team can enter more
than one wrestler in a weight
class, but only one wrestler
can contribute team points.
None of the 10 schools was
able to fill every weight class,
but Findlay had the largest
contingent, 16 wrestlers, and
they won five titles. Other
schools numbers were Elida
(14 wrestlers, two titles),
Celina (12, 2), Jefferson
(12, 1), Coldwater (10, 4),
Elyria (10, 3), Parkway (8, 3),
Versailles (5, 3), Riverside (2,
1), and Dayton Dunbar (1, 0).

Team scores: Findlay 205.83,

Elyria 129.00, Coldwater 126.17,
Parkway 123.50, Celina 122.00,
Elida 121.50, Versailles 97.33,
Delphos Jefferson 82.00, Dayton
Dunbar 23.00, Riverside 19.83.

LAKE ERIE
Regulations to Remember: The daily bag limit for walleye in
Ohio waters of Lake Erie is 6 fish per angler; minimum size limit
is 15 inches. The daily bag limit for yellow perch is 30 fish per
angler in all Ohio waters of Lake Erie. The trout and salmon daily
bag limit is 2 fish per angler; minimum-size limit is 12 inches. The
black bass (largemouth and smallmouth bass) daily bag limit is 5 fish
per angler with a 14-inch minimum size limit.
Walleye: With water temperatures still in the 40s, walleye fishing
continues to be excellent around the islands, Catawba and from Cedar
Point to Vermilion. Fishing at night has been good in the same areas
and around Cleveland harbor. Most walleye have been caught by
trolling with crankbaits.

Deer-gun hunters have 2 additional days

Ohios 2015 deer-gun season continues Monday and Tuesday, according
to the ODNR.
During the Dec. 28-29 firearm season, all hunters (except waterfowl
hunters) must wear a vest, coat, jacket or coveralls that are either solid hunter
orange or camouflage hunter orange. A hunter orange hat or cap is a great
safety addition, but does not satisfy legal requirements.
Hunters may use 10-, 12-, 16-, 20-, 28- or .410-gauge shotguns using
slugs; handguns with five-inch minimum barrels, using straight-walled cartridges of .357 caliber or larger; muzzleloading rifles of at least .38 caliber
or larger; longbows or crossbows. Straight-walled cartridge rifles are legal in
the following calibers: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super
Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41 Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special,
.44 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester
Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .450 Marlin, .454 Casull, .460 Smith &

Shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles in approved calibers cannot
have more than three shells.

KENTON Jeffersons
boys basketball team waited
for the perfect moment to
hit its only made 3-pointer
Wednesday night at Kenton.
The very end.
Junior Jace Stockwell
drained a long-ranger from
the left wing with no time
on the clock to give the visiting Wildcats a 56-55 nonleague squeaker over the host
Wildcats.
Jefferson (6-2) led 43-38
to commence the final period and seemed in control,
building that lead to 49-40 on
a Stockwell (11 markers, 3
assists, 8 thefts) basket with
just over six minutes left.
Back came Kenton behind
junior Thomas Phillips (16
points, 10 boards, 6 blocked
shots) with a 7-point eruption, starting with a 3-point
play at 5:47. They kept
coming and took the lead at
54-53 on a pair of Phillips
foul shots at 40.7 ticks. The
Jeffcats missed a 3-ball,
Austin Buroker was fouled
and hit the 1st-of-2 at 22.4
ticks. The visitors missed
another triple shortly after
and Luke Nichols (7 boards)
was fouled with 5.2 ticks left.
He missed both foul shots of
the double-bonus, Stockwell
got the board and advanced
it to mid-court before calling
the guests final timeout at
3.0 ticks.
After Kenton called its
final timeout, the inbounds
was knocked out of bounds
with Delphos keeping pos-

session on the left side of

the floor, foul-line extended, at 1.5 ticks. Senior Ryan
Goergens inbounded it to
Stockwell about 22 feet away
and he drained the shot as the
horn sounded and the bench
emptied in celebration.
Ive been on the other
end of that before, Jefferson
head man Marc Smith
explained. We executed the
play well and we move on
with our fifth straight win.
The only thing I was disappointed in was how we didnt
handle being out of rhythm
with Christmas vacation. We
have a lot of experienced kids
and you talk to them all the
time about being ready to
play in all situations.
Jefferson started out cold
with a 5-of-17 first period.
However, thanks to 10 offensive boards 11 total for
the quarter and forcing
five turnovers (23 for the
game) with its defensive variety, they were able to keep
the game close as the hosts
were 5-of-6 shooting. When
Jaron Sharp (11 counters - 3
bombs) dropped a left-wing
triple with 2.1 ticks showing,
Kenton led 16-13.
Kenton started out with a
man-to-man defense to open
the tame with Buroker trying to deny Jefferson senior
Trey Smith (9 of his 29 markers in the period, 9 rebounds)
but early in the second
switched to a triangle-and-2
on Smith and Stockwell.
Still, with Smith garnering
eight more markers and the
Jeffcats heating up (7-of14) and forcing seven more
errors, they built a 27-20 lead

Last week was a lot better for two

of us.
Regular John Parent was 10-2 for the

in the NFL) and I was 9-3 (4-2/5-1).
Third regular Erin Cox was 6-6
(3-3/3-3) and Guest Picker Dave

JIM METCALFE
COLLEGE: Hopefully these all will be
good matchups.
MARSHALL: If this were college basketball, Huskies in a rout. Football, edge
goes to Thundering Herd. Makes sense to
me!
WASHINGTON STATE: Mike Leach can
flat-out coach offense. Hurricanes are still
trying to get there.
WASHINGTON: Chris Pedersen can flatout coach and recruit, so Huskies are heading
back to their Purple Reign days.
DUKE: Indiana has struggled keeping
QBs healthy. The Hoosiers also struggle
stopping people Bobby Knight must be
furious! Oops: wrong sport but the same
result.
VIRGINIA TECH: Frank Beamers
good-bye to the sport of college football.
That extra emotion should push Techsters

NEBRASKA: Cornhuskers might be the
bad-luck story of 2015-16 college football.

ticks. However, Sharp drove
for a deuce to beat the horn
but missed the and-1 for a
27-22 halftime scoreboard.
Kenton continued in its
gimmick D in the third
stanza but Smith (6) and
Stockwell (4) still were effective as the visitors led by as
much as 41-30 on a Smith
tally at 2:01. As well, eight
more offensive boards (25
for the game) and seven more
turnovers prevented Kenton
from taking advantage of
6-of-12 shooting. They managed to climb within 43-38
on another left-wing bomb
by Hunter Phillips (3 blocks)
with 8.1 ticks on the board.
Kenton was well-prepared. This is the first time
weve played them but
(Kenton Head) Coach (Matt)
McCullough got them ready,
Coach Smith added. They
shot the ball better from 3
than they had all year, so that
is to their credit. They didnt
do anything defensively we
werent prepared for, either.
Trey carried us but we got a
lot of defensive intensity and
energy from Brenan (Auer)
tonight.
Jefferson finished 24-of62 shooting the ball (1-of12 downtown) for 38.7 percent and 7-of-13 at the line
(53.8%): with 35 caroms (25
offensive) as Josh Teman had
six and Dalton Hicks four;
and with 12 turnovers and
19 fouls. Auer dished three
assists.
Kenton downed 17-of-38

44.8 percent and 14-of-19
freebies (73.7%); secured 29

Pigskin Picks
All that pent-up frustration should carry the
day.
PROS
WASHINGTON: Redskins can take
major step toward winning NFC Least.
Maybe they arent the mess everyone else is.
CINCINNATI: Brock Osweiler is a firsthalf quarterback but is horrid the second
half. A part of me says Broncos should be
extremely angry at last weeks loss and how
it happened but I think McCarron outplays
Osweiler for the whole game, especially if
pass rush cant get to Bengals backup QB.
PITTSBURGH: For a decade, one of the
fiercest rivalries in the NFL but Ray Lewis,
Troy and such are long gone. What is left is a
better Steelers team than the Ravens.
ARIZONA: If game were in Lambeau,
Id favor Packers. In the Desert Southwest,
go with a high-powered Cardinals looking as
the NFC favorite for the Super Bowl.
NEW ENGLAND: Jets can slow down
Tom Brady and Company. It comes down to
the defensive whiz that is Belichick to stymie
Fitzpatrick and Friends.
MINNESOTA: G-Men had their shot last
week against Panthers to spring an upset,
especially if Odell doesnt play. Vikings
should control the football behind All-Day.
===========
ERIN COX
COLLEGE
MARSHALL: Not a fan of UConn. The
Thundering Herd is pretty cool.
WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars
had an impressive schedule and didnt fair
too bad at all against some tough teams.
DUKE: There is no good pick here, so I
will go with best record.
VIRGINIA TECH: I havent heard of
Tulsa, so Ill go with the Hokies.
UCLA: Im going to lose half these
games anyway so I will just type the shortest
names to save me time from overthinking
how I will lose.
NFL
PHILADELPHIA: Id like to pick neither
since Dallas is out (Editors Note: You could
pick a tie!!!).
DENVER: Im hoping home turf means
something.
PITTSBURGH: These two teams both
are similar in length so I just went with the
first listed.
ARIZONA: A before loser.

JETS: Jets before cheaters, Belicheaters

or Tomcheaters. Those should be added to
the dictionary.
MINNESOTA: Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year!
==========
JOHN PARENT
College:
Marshall- If this were a basketball game,
Id take UConn, but few small schools have
a football legacy like that of the Thundering
Herd.
Miami- The U made the best hire of all
the schools to change coaches. Mark Richt
wont necessarily make an impact on this
game, but the momentum generated by his
hire should be enough to boost an underachieving squad.
Southern Miss- This is a pure guess.
Unlike all of the other games listed here, I
have no insight to this one at all (Oh, wait, I
have no insight into any of them).
Indians- The Hoosiers cannot stop anyone, but they have a high-scoring offense of
their own. Look for a 46-44 game (especially
with that short right field porch at Yankee
Stadium).
Virginia Tech- Frank Beamers last hurrah.
UCLA- How much do you think Big Red
Nation misses Frank Solich right about now?
The Huskers have been in free fall since his
firing.
Pros:
Washington- I know the Skins havent
won very often on the road, but the Eagles
have a bad defense and Washington seems to
be rolling lately.
Denver- The Broncos defense has been
largely responsible for the teams 10-3 mark
and facing a backup quarterback in Cincys
AJ McCarron bodes well for the Orange
Crush.
Pittsburgh- The Steelers have been hot
and Baltimore is getting worse.
Arizona- Both teams have playoff spots
already secured and the Packers likely need
this one more than the Cardinals, but Arizona
has been far more consistent this season.
New England- This should be a
three-touchdown spread. Pats easily.
Minnesota- This pick is more about the
Giants than the Vikings.

Peace

The third grace mentioned by Paul as a fruit of the Spirit is peace. Peace can be
both internal as well as external; it is possible to be at peace within oneself while
all around loom chaos and mayhem, just as it is possible for one to be at peace
externally, and even to have a calm outward disposition, while war and strife rage
within. Ideally, we should strive to have both internal and external peace, to be at
peace with everyone, and to live harmoniously with those around us while being
in a tranquil state of mind. Peace with others can only come from good relations
and the active goodwill towards all that is characteristic of true Christian love.
Peace within ourselves requires that we truly trust in God and believe that He has
us safely in His hands, and from knowing that we are doing His will. This last point
is crucial. This is, we must love Gods word and heed His commandments to have
real peace within ourselves. Those who knowingly do wrong cannot know peace,
for they will have a dissonant spirit from knowing what is right but still doing what
is wrong. So, we should study Gods word and do the good works that He has set
before us as our task. Love God and love one another, and peace will follow.
O that you had hearkened to my commandments! Then your peace would
have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea...
R.S.V. Isaiah 48:18

Happy New Year!

by EVELYN MARTIN

In many places people stay up late to see the old year

out and the new year in. Almost everywhere in the world
church bells ring, horns toot, whistles blow, sirens shriek.
Swarms of happy, noisy people celebrate in high spirits. The
celebrations generally go on past midnight into January 1.
Samoa and parts of Kiribati are the first places to welcome
the New Year while Baker Island, in the United States, is
among the last.
The most iconic New Years tradition is the dropping of
a giant ball at the stroke of midnight in New York Citys
Times Square Millions of people around the world watch the
event, which has taken place almost every year since 1907.
The event was first organized by Adolph Ochs, owner of
The New York Times newspaper, as a successor to a series
of New Years Eve fireworks displays he held at the building
to promote its status as the new headquarters of the Times,
while the ball itself was designed by Artkraft Strauss. First
held on Dec. 31, 1907, to welcome 1908, the ball drop has
been held annually since, except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts. Over time, the ball itself has
ballooned from a 700-pound iron-and-wood orb to a brightly
patterned sphere 12 feet in diameter with its outer surface
consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels and weighing in
at nearly 12,000 pounds
Another iconic tradition at the stroke of midnight is the
singing of Auld Lang Syne It is often remarked that Auld
Lang Syne is one of the most popular songs that nobody
knows the lyrics to. Auld Lang Syne literally translates as
old long since and means times gone by.
Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish song that was first
published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of
the book, Scots Musical Museum. Burns had transcribed it
after he heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area
of Scotland, Burnss homeland. The song asks whether old
friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness,

But it was bandleader Guy Lombardo, and not Robert

Burns, who popularized the song and turned it into a New
Years tradition. Lombardo first played the song at midnight
at a New Years eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New
York City in 1929, and a tradition was born. After that,
Lombardos version of the song was played every New
Years eve from the 1930s until 1976 at the Waldorf Astoria.
In the first years it was broadcast on radio, and then on television. The song became such a New Years tradition that
Life magazine wrote that if Lombardo failed to play Auld
Lang Syne, the American public would not believe that the
new year had really arrived.
The most common use of the song involves only the first
verse and the chorus.
Here is Burns original Scots transcription:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought
to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang
syne*?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo, for auld lang syne, well tak a
cup o kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
And surely yell be your pint-stoup! and surely Ill be
mine! And well tak a cup o kindness yet, for auld lang
syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes, and poud the gowans
fine; But weve wanderd mony a weary fit, sin auld lang
syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidld in the burn, frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roard sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And theres a hand, my trusty fiere! and gies a hand o
thine! And well tak a right gude-willie waught, for auld
lang syne.

Ask for survey of Miami & Erie Canal

According to a dispatch from Columbus, a new survey of
the Miami and Erie Canal super highway route is being urged.
Representatives of the assn. met with Governor Cooper and highway director Waid. According to reports, the section of highway
through Delphos is not to be considered for early construction.
Waid said that when funds become available, probably next
year, he will order a new survey of the route. Waid said that the two
heavy traffic sections would be planned first, between Cincinnati
and Dayton, and between Toledo and Defiance. The Governor
told the committee that something must be done soon to solve the
heavy traffic problem.
The next legislature will be asked to repeal the Stevens law
which stands in the way of use of the canal bed between Defiance
and Middletown.

Gramm Motors Expands

Office and Has
New Trucks
The large addition to the office of Gramm Motors at the local
plant is now being occupied. The Lima offices are being moved to
Delphos and installed in the portion of the office building recently
erected.
This building is now about six times as large as it was before.
The engineering department has been moved from the factory
building and now occupies a portion of the new office.
The company is now ready to place its new models on the
market. The first new two-ton model is now running in an experimental test. The one and a half and two and a half ton models have
been built and will soon be tested.
It had been the intention of the management to build 50 samples
of these three models. They are all six-cylinder and equipped with
hydraulic brakes and have dual rear tires as regular equipment.
They give more tire, more axle capacity and more engine than their
competitors in this class and at a lower price. All are designed to do
50 to 55 miles an hour without over-taxing the motor.
The export business is opening up nicely at the present time.

War Department
Adapts Gas Alarm
The war department has taken away the infantrymans rattle.
The rattle carried by the doughboys during the world war for
poison gas alarms has been abolished in favor of the alarm horn.
Both alarms were used during the war, but the chemical warfare
experts have decided that soldiers might confuse the rattle with the
noise made by machine-guns.

Former Local Girls

Will Display Talent
Delphos people will have the opportunity to hear two former
girls of this city, Misses Vera and Dorothy Traxler, when they will
sing over station WOWO Ft. Wayne August 6th.
The girls are well-known here and were prominent for their
ability and talent in singing; and many will be anxious to hear
them on the radio. The Traxlers lived in Delphos for several years,
Mr. Traxler having been agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance
Company here.

Balloon Ascensions at
Tri-County Fair
Arrangements were completed for the use of the state ground
on North Canal street, known as the Old Mill lot, and also for
ground adjoining it, belonging to Al Whirrett to be used for the
balloon ascensions to be held during the Delphos Tri-County fair.
A contract has been entered into with Clyde Shaffer of
Indianapolis, for the ascensions. Shaffer will be well remembered
by the people of Delphos and visitors, as the aeronaut who made
the ascension here at the 1927 fair when he gave the finest kind of
exhibitions.
He will make multiple drops, using three parachutes on
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and five parachutes as a
special attraction on Wednesday.
Ed. Wulfhorst, chairman of the free acts committee, announces
that kerosene to be used in inflating the balloons will be donated by
the Paragon Refining company through Clarence Swick, of Ohio
bulks for that company. It is estimated that 50 gallons of oil will be
used for the five days.

loudly and early as they please, according to a recent decision of J.
Ward Russel, city attorney, who was called on to settle the matter.
Numerous residents had complained to the mayor ambitious
chantioleers continually disturbed their slumbers with lusty calisations. The birds were also noisy on cloudy days. The citizens
claimed that they should be declared nuisances and done away
with.
The mayor stated he had never heard of an ordinance for quieting roosters and consulted the city attorney. Russel decided there
was nothing to be done about the fowls outside of using them for
chicken dinner or following the ancient maxin of early to bed and
early to rise.
Delphos Herald,
Aug. 6, 1919

Making a New Years resolution is another New Years

tradition. Its a promise you make to yourself to start doing
something good or stop doing something bad on the first day
of the year: Here are some resolutions made by children:
To be nicer to my sisters.
I want to learn more about doctor stuff,
To take better care of my bunny, Daisy,
To eat healthier,
Not being such a picky eater,
And a 4-year-old said, Im going to do nothing.
Other New Year customs and beliefs have been passed
down through the ages. Here are some age-old sayings and
proverbs.
On New Years Eve, kiss the person you hope to keep
kissing.
If New Years Eve night wind blow south, It betokened
warmth and growth.
For abundance in the new year, fill your pockets and
cupboards today.
If the old year goes out like a lion, the new year will come
in like a lamb.
Begin the new year square with every man.(i.e., pay your
debts!) Robert B. Thomas, founder of The Old Farmers
Almanac
So ring those church bells, toot the horns, blow your
whistles, make those sirens shriek, kiss the person you hope
to keep kissing and celebrate in high spirits. (within moderation and please use a designated driver) because as Mark
Twain said:
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things that you didnt do than by the ones you did
do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.
Discover. Mark Twain.

Opinion
All I ever
wanted
Ribbon and discarded wrapping paper is
cleaned up, the boxes and gift bags are
restowed under the stairs.
Ringo is snoozing on his new blanket and
my husband is trying to decide which of his
new movies to watch.
I look around the kitchen and feel the need
to straighten up and get the brunch dishes in
the dishwasher as the smell of frying bacon
still clings to the air.
It was a wonderful Christmas morning. My
husband and I, much like our much younger
selves, get up around 6 a.m. and have our
morning beverages of choice he coffee and
I chocolate milk. We talked about the presents
we know are under the tree and guess at the
few mystery packages.
Its time. We give Ringo his packages and
hes all excited because he can smell the treats
through the wrapping. He also loves, loves,

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand
loves new toys. Its one of his favorite things.
My husband and I make short work of getting our gifts unwrapped and then our friends
arrived for our annual Christmas Brunch.
I break out the Mimosas and start frying
bacon and we talk and laugh and catch a few
minutes of The Christmas Story in between.
Breakfast is delicious as always because its
almost impossible to screw up bacon and
eggs.
We say our goodbyes and once again its
just us.
I have a secret. These things are all wonderful but the best part of the day is who
I spend it with. My husband, Ringo, good
friends; who could ask for more?
I have another secret. I had all I ever wanted before the day started. Ill run through the
list again: my husband, Ringo, family, good
friends. It was all right there the whole time.

Up on the tree top

Last week, this space featured an essay about mud.

This week is different. This
week, there will be mention of
Christmas mud.
With a 4-month-old piglet
in the throes of porcine preschool, we didnt put up our
tree this year. Although our
Christmas tree isnt an actual
tree, real or simulated, but is
instead a four-foot tall ladder
that we string with lights and
mailed cards, it still seemed a
risky proposition for Holiday
2015. Its one thing to pick
up spilled cards, even those
warmed by a comfortably
curled cat. Its quite another to
chase a piglet pulling a ladder
pulled by a blinking fairy-light
string.
So there is no Christmas
ladder on the heated side of
the deck window this year. But
with so many trees on the outdoor side and strings of solar
lights collected from previous
years, we (me) decided to decorate one of the sugar maples.

Danielle came to see Dr. Maurice Chung

after three unsuccessful years of treatment
for pelvic pain. At age 29, she had undergone two surgeries to alleviate severe cramps
and bleeding. When those procedures proved
ineffective, she underwent a complete hysterectomy. But despite all of these drastic and
costly measures, Danielle (not her real name)
continued to have pain.
Dr. Chung traced the source of the problem
to an earlier injury. Danielle had fallen, but
no one at the time realized there was damage
to her bladder, muscles and nerves. Based on
his diagnosis, Dr. Chung was able to reduce
Danielles pain by around 80 percent with
medication and minimally invasive surgery.
His mission is to help others like her avoid the
same kind of ordeal.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Chung has
treated women for severe menstrual pain,
sexual pain, endometriosis, bladder control,
and organ prolapse, among other ailments. He
is quietly passionate about managing pain in
the least invasive way possible.
Clarifying the problem is the first step
Pelvic pain is often diagnosed as endometriosis, Dr. Chung points out. But endometriosis accounts for only about 20% of all
cases. By viewing pain through a wider lens
and better understanding the source of pain,
Dr. Chung helps women avoid unnecessary
surgery. When a woman comes to me with
severe pain, I start with the least invasive
treatment approach, he says. Most instances
of pelvic pain do not require major surgery.
New Center for Treating Pelvic Pain
A graduate of Northeastern University

College of Pharmacy and Tufts University

Medical School, Dr. Chung is board-certified
in OB-GYN and uro-gynecology. He has been
a certified laparoscopic surgeon since 1995.
Dr. Chung oversees the Van Wert County
Hospital Womens Center of Excellence for
Pelvic Pain, Organ Prolapse and Bladder
Control, which opened in 2015.
Visitors to the Center include women at
every stage of life, from teenagers to the
elderly. What brings them to the Center is
simple: They have pain often debilitating
pain but the cause can be complex difficult
to pinpoint. In many cases, women have come
to Dr. Chung only after previous treatment
efforts proved unsuccessful.
Pain is not normal and should not be
ignored
Women are brought up to accept that pain
is a normal part of their lives, Dr. Chung
says, but pain is not normal. It is, however,
commonplace and can take a huge toll on
a womans quality of life. Pain is important; it points us toward solving a problem
and should not be ignored. Sometimes, after
unsuccessful attempts to treat pelvic pain,
women are made to feel the problem is all in
their head when, in fact, the pain is very real.
At the Center we take all womens symptoms seriously, Dr. Chung says. We start
by engaging them in a conversation to understand every possible factor that could be
causing their problem. We want our patients
to know they are not alone. With proper diagnosis and a cautious approach to treatment,
there is a good possibility we can alleviate
their pain without drastic measures.
