A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In writing an essay or argumentative writing, the writer should
comprise grammatical and understandable paragraph to make the
readers get into the writers idea. Meanwhile, most of the students
are confronted with writing abilities in creating good paragraph. It
is proven by students writing product of final examination.
Students get trouble when conveying their idea into a written text
and linking an idea into another idea. Based on the problem, the
researcher wants to analyze students writing ability in forming
transition and connector. In fact, a study of transition signal has
been conducted in such a long time. However, the error analysis
of that is unverified yet. Hence, the researcher shall look forward
to do research about An Error Analysis of Students Writing
Ability of Argumentative Writing in Forming Transition and
Connector Made by Second Year Students at UIN Sunan Ampel
Surabaya

1. What are types of error made by second year students at UIN
Sunan Ampel Surabaya in forming transition and connector?
2. What formations errors are found in the argumentative writing
made by second year students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya?

forming transition and connector made by second year
students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya?
C. PREVIOUS STUDY

There are similar study taken before Using TAD (TransitionAction-Details) Strategy to Improve the Eight Grade Students
Ability in Writing Recount Texts at SMPN 2 Depok in the
Academic Year of 2013/2014 by Veranita Budiani a student of
English Education Study Program in Faculty of Language and
Arts at Yogyakarta State University by year 2014.In this study, the
writer focuses on the strategy used in teaching writing to
overcome students lack in forming transition signal.

D. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
(Describe in 50 words, the theory used in data analysis)

Transition word and phrase have little specific meaning in


English, but they indicate the relationship of one idea to another1.
They are written on some words or phrases such as first/second,
furthermore, on the other hand, for example, and in conclusion.
Transition signals are like traffic signals. They tell the reader
when to slow down, tum around, and stop. Using transition
signals makes your paragraph smoother and helps your reader

understand it easily2.

E. RESEARCH METHODS

(Describe in 100 words, why the method is chosen, what

instruments are used, how to analyze the data)

Methodology used in this study is quantitative. Based on the

research question above, the writer asks about the error


frequencies. Therefore, the writer uses quantitative methodology
to analyze the data. Based on a book by Rajasekar, S,
Philominathan, P, and Chinnathambi, V, with the title Research
Methodology:

Quantitative research is based on the measurement of


quantity or amount

A frequency is a numerical data. Then, the result will be


delivered in table or graph.
