Letting agencies
Letting agencies act on behalf of landlords to arrange the letting of private accommodation. Some
agencies will only be finding tenants and doing initial paperwork and some will also manage the property
on behalf of the landlord throughout the term of the tenancy. The only agency recommended by the
University is UBU Lettings, http://ubulettings.co.uk/ Tel: 0117 3318266, 5 Tyndall Avenue, Bristol, BS8
1UD. UBU Lettings is run by the Students Union and charge no fees to students.
Agents must be a member of a redress scheme offering a free, independent service for resolving disputes.
All agents on this list are also members of/affiliated to a professional trade organisation which requires
them to comply with a code of practice and offers a complaints and disciplinary procedure. However the
inclusion of a Letting Agency on this list should not be regarded as a recommendation. It is the individuals
responsibility to understand each accommodation agencys terms and conditions of business.
Agencies may only charge you when they find you a suitable property you then agree to let. You should
not be paying anything before this point. Their charge will usually be at least 35% of the first months
rent. They must be clear as to what fees you will be charged before you sign an agreement.

and if the matter is still not resolved then consider contacting the redress scheme or the trade
organisation. Or you can contact us for advice.
