REPORT

Three days Workshop on Introduction to Sustainable Engineering

Day 1
Session 1: Introduction to the Training Program and Need for Sustainability Teaching in
Engineering.
It gave an idea about the theme of the training program and proposed that a sustainability
engineering informed paradigm be embedded throughout all the professional degrees that are
being offered in KTU
Session 2: Sustainable Development: Concepts and Challenges
The 8 goals of UNDP (United Nations Development Program) were discussed. Also the basic
principles of sustainable engineering and challenges were seen.
Session 3: Technology and Sustainable Development
Session 4: Regional/Local Environmental issues
The reasons for water contamination and air contamination were discussed and also gave an
insight into different steps to be taken as preventive action.
Day 2
Session 1: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process which ensures that all environmental
matters are taken into account quite early in the project at planning process itself. It takes into
consideration not only technical and economic considerations but also, traditional aspects like
impact on local people, biodiversity etc.
Session 2: Sustainable Energy- Conventional and Non conventional
Conventional energy usage is higher than non-conventional energy at present, there is a lot of
concern about fossil fuels. The session was about different renewable resources currently used.
Session 3: Sustainable habitat and Green buildings
Basic concepts of sustainable habitat, Green buildings, green materials for building construction,
material selection for sustainable design, green building certification were discussed. Some
methods for increasing energy efficiency of buildings, sustainable cities, sustainable transport,
and case studies in sustainable engineering were also discussed.
Session 4: Green Chemistry and Green Engineering

The session was all about the design of chemical products and processes that can decrease or
eliminate the use of hazardous materials like fertilizers.
Day 3
Session 1: Sustainable Urbanization and Poverty Reduction
Urbanization trends/Global patterns of urbanization
Urbanization issues/ Self built slum housing, Slum conditions and pollutions, problems faced in
slums, business opportunities in slums, strategies to improve social housing in slums, improving
water supplies in slums, improving waste disposal from slums
Traffic problems in urban areas
Session 2: Bio-mimicking and Life Cycle Analysis
Session 3: Multi-lateral Environmental Protocols and Carbon Accounting
Session 4: Industrial Ecology

We are extremely thankful to our principal Dr. SR Deepa and to the Management for
assigning us to attend this workshop. It was a wonderful opportunity for us.
