FPSO &
SPECIAL VESSELS
Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSOs) are particularly
effective in remote or deepwater locations where fixed platforms and seabed
pipelines are not cost effective. FPSOs eliminate the need to lay expensive
long-distance pipelines from the processing facility to an onshore terminal and
are an optimal choice for development when there is no existing infrastructure.
They also provide an economically attractive solution for marginal oil fields which
can be exhausted in a few years and do not justify the expense of installing
fixed facilities. Furthermore, once the field is depleted, the FPSO can be moved
to a new location.
Used in offshore production since the 1970s, FPSOs are operating in the
North Sea, offshore Brazil, Asia Pacific, the Mediterranean Sea and offshore
West Africa. Over 80 BRUSH generators are providing main power to over 30
FPSOs in these areas. In addition to the standard features required for oil and
gas applications, the BRUSH generators used on FPSOs also have:

nC
apability to operate anywhere in the world, from the harsh environments of
the Arctic to the tropical humidity of offshore Africa
nB
earings and oil drains designed to operate throughout the roll and pitch
range of the vessel
nC
ustom designed windings to match the fault level requirements of the ships

LNG PRODUCTION AND

GAS TRANSPORTATION
One of the pioneers of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Industry, Qatargas, is
the worlds largest LNG producer, with an annual capacity of 42 million tonnes
per annum (mtpa). To provide power for the first three LNG trains, six 31 MW
gas turbine driven BRUSH generators were installed at the plant between 1994
and 1996. When the decision was taken to add the four mega-trains, BRUSH
generators were again selected for a further three 35 MW gas turbines installed
in 2007 to provide the additional power needed as the new capacity came
online between 2009 and 2011.
LNG produced in Ras Lafan is transported in a dedicated fleet of ships to
markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The largest LNG import terminal
in the world is the Sabine Pass LNG terminal, located on the border between
Texas and Louisiana in the USA, where four 27 MW gas turbine driven BRUSH
generators produce the power required for the regasification of over four billion
cubic feet of natural gas per day.
Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) is a technology that allows operators in
the oil & gas industry to access offshore gas fields that would otherwise be too
costly or difficult to develop. The worlds first FLNG facility will be moored some
200 kilometres off the Australian Coast at the Prelude gas field. Displacing
600,000 tonnes of water, this will be the largest floating object ever constructed
but will use significantly less materials, land and seabed area than developing
the same gas in an equivalent onshore facility.
The FLNG facility will produce a total of 5.3 mtpa of LNG, condensate and
LPG. The facility will chill the natural gas produced at the field and shrink its
volume by a factor of 600 so that ocean-going carriers can load the LNG
and the other liquid by-products for delivery to market anywhere in the world.
Maintaining a facility of this type in a remote and hostile environment for a
period of 25 years, before the first planned inspection and overhaul, requires a
reliable source of power. Based on decades of experience in the onshore LNG
market, three steam turbine driven 40 MW BRUSH generators with full control
panels were selected for the task.

EXPERIENCE

THE HIBERNIA GRAVITY BASED STRUCTURE

The Hibernia GBS, at 660,000 tons, is the worlds largest offshore oil platform
and was built for Mobil to operate off the east coast of Canada. BRUSH
provided both 2 and 4 pole generators for gas and steam turbine drives, as well
as supplying a full PRISMIC Power Management and Excitation Systems.
DRILLING RIGS
BRUSH has continued to provide reliable equipment to todays versatile semisubmersible, self-propelled drilling vessels.
Also included within the scope of supply was a BRUSH PRISMIC Power
Management System, delivering trusted reliability to the complete power
generation and distribution system.
FPSO
BRUSH has been involved in this field since the early offshore requirements
for a vessel to remain in the same location, with minimal movement, for
considerable time.
Generators have continued to be supplied to FPSO vessels and recent
installations have seen BRUSH Generators, totalling over 250MVA of installed
power, being employed on such prestigious projects as Petro Canadas
TERRA NOVA, Statoil NORNE, Esso JOTUN and Conoco Phillips innovative
RAMFORM BANFF.
OIL AND GAS ONSHORE
Southern Oman, Petroleum Development Organisation (PDO) concentrates
oil production in four major areas: Bahja, Rima, Nimr and Marmul, all desert
locations between 700km and 800km from Muscat. In addition to oil, a
significant amount of water is recovered at Nimr, Rima and Marmul Production
Stations.
This was achieved by installing Sulzer high pressure pumps, each sized for a
flow rate of 20,000 cubic metres of water per day. To accommodate a range
of discharge pressures, BRUSH Synchronous Motors, operating in open
ambient temperatures of above 50C, with rises in accordance with Class B
temperatures, were selected to drive the pumps. In addition to the motors,
BRUSH also provided control systems, transformers and neutral earthing
resistors at each site.
