Dr. Schmidt
Final

Print your name on the cover of the blue book. Put all your answers in the blue book. For complete credit show all your work in the exam booklet.
Start a new page for each problem. Partial credit will be given for incomplete answers. At the conclusion of the exam fold this exam sheet in half and
place in your blue book.

1. (10 points) Answer True or False to the following questions regarding a ball tethered to an axis by a massless string and
rotating in a horizontal circle in uniform circular motion on a frictionless surface. If the statement is false correct it to make it
true.
a) The tension in the string provides the centripetal force.
b) The motion requires there to be a force away from the axis to balance the centripetal force.
c) For a ball of the same mass moving at the same speed but at a smaller radius would need less tension in the string.
d) For a ball with the same mass moving with an increased angular speed at the same radius would need a greater tension in the
string.
e) An increase in R would require a higher speed to keep the tension the same for the same mass.
2. (10 points) Which of the following conditions will result in simple harmonic motion?
a) a mass attached to the free end of a vertical spring
b) a mass on the top of a frictionless dome surface
c) a ball rolling inside the bottom of a bowl shaped surface
d) a physical pendulum
e) a ball rolling inside a cone shaped surface
3. (15 points) For each of the following statements indicate where on the graph A, B, and/or C the situation stated is best
described. It may be valid for more than one point or at no point on the graph.
B
a) The acceleration is zero.
y(m)
b) The velocity is zero.
C
c) The speed is at a maximum.
A
d) The acceleration is down.
e) The object is decelerating

4. An object has two identical forces F acting at different points A and B as shown in the
figure. These forces act along a common line.
a. (5 points) Which of these forces if any produces the greater torque about the axis shown?
b. (5 points) In what direction is the torque for each force at A and at B, into or out of the page?
5. (10 points) To raise the Titanic, an ocean liner that displaced 4.6 x 108 N of water when afloat, it
was proposed to fill the inside of the sunken ship with ping pong balls. A ping-pong ball has a
diameter of 4.0 cm. The density of seawater is 1.025 x 103 kg/m3. How many balls would it have taken
to raise the Titanic?

6. (15 points) A worker unloading a truck sets a 25 kg package onto a 4.0 m long ramp. The package
slides down starting from rest at the top. The ramp is sloped at an angle of 30o with respect to the horizon. The package reaches a
speed of 5.0 m/s at the bottom of the ramp. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction as the package slides down?
7. (10 points) A professor wishing to demonstrate conservation of angular momentum, holds two 10.0 kg mass at arms length
0.79 m from his body which is centered on a vertical axis of rotational. While moving with an angular speed of 0.41 rad/s he pulls
the weights in to a distance of 0.45 m . What is his new angular velocity? Assume the professor contributes no moment of inertia.
8. (10 points) A crane next to Tech consists of a horizontal boom made of a 30.0 m uniform bar weighing 2200 N. The boom is
held up by a vertical support such that one end extends out 25 m beyond the
support. A cable which makes an angle of = 22o with the boom is attached to the

end of the boom. The cable can only sustain a tension of 7,200 N before breaking.
M
A 520 N mass M is used to counterbalance the load of the crane. How much mass
m can this crane lift before breaking the cable, when the mass hangs from a cable 10
m from the end of the boom?
9. (10 points) The apparatus for drawing water from of an old wishing well consists of a solid
wood bucket drum with a 35 cm diameter and a mass 2.5 kg around which is wrapped a
massless rope. The other end of the rope is tied to an old oaken bucket of mass 1.5 kg. The drum
has a crank handle of negligible mass. What is the velocity of the bucket 2.0 seconds after the
handle is released and the bucket unwinds the rope as it descends into the well?
