Asamblea del Pueblo; In 1973 fue Presidente Regional de la UP. This will be a
key interview. Think about how to approach it. He was very involved in split
of MAPU from PDC. Returned to Chile unknown; returned to Concepcin from
exile in Europe to become Sociology profesor at UdeC. Left position in 2006.
Still lives in Concepcin Compaero and good friend Bautista Van Schouwen
(founder of MIR). In 1965, MAPU was already planning rupture, factions that
split with UP. (contact: Alejandra Brito, Miguel Urrutia, Mario Garces).
Fernando Robles (MAPU) (10/5/71 Diario Color, p.13). Also returned from
exile to Concepcin to teach in reopened Sociology Department. Poor health.
Asamblea del Pueblo - try to find more witnesses, de base y de direccion.
Mario experienced it more from base perspective, soon after became more
integrated into leadership positions within MIR. MIR in Santiago sent spies to
see what was happening with MIR in Concepcin. Need to look at processes
separate, once M. Enriquez leaves for Santiago, what happens in Concepcin?
MIR in Conce had "sobreinformacin" -- tremendous intelligence apparatus.
apparatus of information. Mario at one point say 600 page document on
information about Concepcion (water resources, resistance, targets?), lots of
information, but unable to make reality in practice, or to have enough time to
organize.
Mario recently obtained email address of
Ariel, Jefe del aparato de Informacion del MIR in Concepcion vive en
Suiza . This may have been leader figure who got Mario and others out of
Concepcion in time.
Erick Encargado Militar in Concepcin vive en Austria. Viene a Chile

Juan "Gato" lives in Puerto Montt, was in the aparato de direccion del MIR
PS ?
Washington Carrasco - Military leader in charge of Conce after coup. Less
initial violence, fewer detentions. Perhaps because of personal ties,
familarity. See Juan Bautista interview, phone call from Carrasco.
More violent when Aurellano Stark arrived.
Is Carrasco alive? Try to interview him.
1980 seems like good end point because by then the region's industrial base
had largely been destroyed -- look at Textil in Tome & Chiguayante, Loza in
Penco, Crystal in Lirquen...Try to understand this process too, Era era la
situacion industrial en la ciudad despues??? Here keep thinking about spatial
transformations. The Malls, the Private Universities all came later, the first
phase or first sector hit was the De-industrialization of the industria nacional
in the region, ca. 1980-1983.
Archives in Conce-- hard. Maybe turn elsewhere to find statistical information,

To Winn:
I'll be in Chile from August 4-20 for a short research trip, particularly to look
at post-1973 materials. Any suggestions you may have of archives I should
visit or how to approach this trip going into the fall research funding cycle
would be very helpful. I'm also thinking about where I might want to have
letters of affiliation coming from. I will most likely need to spend time in both
Concepcin and Santiago during my research year, and may end up just
moving back and forth between both cities. I have not yet been in touch with
Jody Pavilack, though I have now read her dissertation. I will write her soon
to ask for any assistance she may be able to provide regarding regional
archives in Conce and access to private company archives, like ENACAR and
CAP.
From Alison:
What to do for two weeks in Chile....This might be a good time to locate
archival collections in Conce, as you said; track down your affiliation letters;
and get some solid (although flexible) ideas about case studies through
conversations with Mario and any preliminary field research that might give
you an idea (talking with people, checking about the existence of company
collections, etc). There's not time for much in two weeks: I'd use the time to
round up the details needed to write solid grant applications.
