Homework #9

1) The 20-kg
kg roll of paper has a radius of gyration kA = 90 mm about an
axis passing through point A. It is pin
pin-supported at both ends by two B

brackets AB. If the rolll rests against a wall for which the coefficient of m
m

300 mm
5
kinetic friction is µk = 0.2 and a vertical force F = 30 N is applied to the R
12

end of the paper, determine the angular acceleration of the roll as the
paper unrolls.
C A

Ans. α = 7.28 rad/s2

2) The mass of gear A is 20 kg and its centroidal radius of

gyration is 150 mm. The mass of gear B is 10 kg and its
centroidal radius of gyration is 100 mm. Calculate the
angular acceleration of gear B when a torque of 12 NN-m is
applied to the shaft of gear A.. Neglect friction.

Ans. α =25.5 rad/s2

3) A uniform rod having a weight of 10 lb is pin supported at A from a

A F
slider block,
ck, which rides in a horiz
horizontal track. If the rod is originally at
rest, and a horizontal forces of F = 15 lb is applied to the block, d
determine the acceleration of the slider block. Assume that the slider
block has negligible mass and that the coefficient of kinetic friction
2 ft
between the block and the track is µk = 0.2. Neglect the dimension d in
the computations.

Ans. aA = 167 ft/s2

4) The lawn roller

oller has a mass of 80 kg and a radius of gyration
kG = 0.175 m. If it is pushed forward with a force of 200 N 200 N
when the handle is at 45o, determine its angular
acceleration. The coefficient of static and kinetic friction R
between the ground and the roller are µs = 0.12 and µk = 0.1, 200
mm
45°

respectively.

Ans. α = 5.01 rad/s2

5) The truck carries the spool which has a weight of 200

lb and a radius of gyration of kG = 2 ft. Determine the
angular acceleration of the spool if it is not tied down
on the truck and the truck begins to accelerate at 5
ft/s2. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction
between the spool and the truck bed are µs = 0.15 and
µk = 0.1, respectively.

Ans. α = 1.15 rad/s2

6) The 16 lb bowling ball is cast horizontally onto a

lane such that initially ω = 0 and its mass center has
a velocity of v = 8 ft/s. If the coefficient of kinetic
friction between the lane and the ball is μk = 0.12,
determine the distance the ball travels before it
rolls without slipping. For the calculation, neglect
the finger holes in the ball and assume the ball has
a uniform density.

Ans. α = 25.71 rad/s2; s = 4.06 ft.
