The Good Samaritan
Luke 10: 25-39

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy strength and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. Jesus
answer to the lawyer, a doctor of the law, who inquired on the matter of achieving
eternal life was to be found from the scriptures itself. The lawyer was able to answer
his own question of which he himself knew. This specific inquiry has led to a very
interesting follow-up question that clarifies the identity of the neighbor as said in
the law. His question has given way to shed light on the matter of whom to love as
thyself. I believe this lawyer, though a very knowledgeable and educated man, still
hungers for the truth when it comes to the law and eternal life. His inquiry of Jesus
view on the matter signifies his eagerness to learn of the truth despite of the
Pharisees plan on finding fault in the Saviors statements.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan, which was my all-time favorite bible story
since I was a child, has become very influential and more meaningful as I have dug
deeper into its true idea and concept. This short yet very important story has taught
me several lessons in my faith and in my Christian journey. This parable focuses on
a helpless and wounded stranger which signifies the neighbor in the law and the
Samaritan who has fulfilled the love thy neighbor as thyself through helping,
healing and securing the condition of the stranger. In terms of similarity, I have seen
that the stranger can be likened to our weak, wounded and helpless condition in our
life as we have been stricken by sin and its results. Sin has made us wounded and
we are thus in need of a physician who would heal us from the results of sin, which

is death. Sin has made us weak and helpless, indicating a great need of a savior
who would not pass us over and would not walk on the other side of the road and
ignore us. Jesus have become the good Samaritan for the sake of us sinners by
dying on the cross of calvary, sacrificing his own precious life.
Seeing how this parable has been of great significance in our life as sinners, I
have also seen how this has affected me on my view as a soon-to-be physician. I
have seen how Mr. Luke has incorporated the specific interventions the Good
Samaritan has done to the stranger. One of which is the use of oil and wine on the
wounds of the stranger. Learning and realizing the chemical and healing properties
of oil and wine has amazed me on how it was being used before and how it was of
high importance nowadays in the health practice.
