Dear Parishioners,
Begin the New Year with a smile
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for
lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note,
and posted on the apple tray, Take only one. God is watching. Moving further
along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate
chip cookies. One child whispered to another, Take all you want. God is
watching the apples.

New Year
As we begin a New Year, it usually requires us to pause and reflect on the year
that has passed. 2015 will be memorable for different people in different ways.
For Holy Trinity Parish, Killiney it will remembered as the Carry Centre year.
2016 will be a significant year in the life of our own nationI wonder what it will
bring for Holy Trinity?

Missions and Charities: In October we made

our annual donationsas we pray for their ongoing work, we pray and give thanks for all those
who support these agencies. Among the donations
was a gift to our parish school, which used some of
the funds to purchase bibles. Pictured is the
Rector and Principal at the handover.
Revision of Vestrypersons
The Register of Vestrypersons is open for revision
until the 11th January 2016. If you are over 18 and
subscribe to parish funds and are not yet
registered, please see one of the Churchwardens
and fill in the registration form. This will enable you
to vote at the meeting of the General Vestry on
the earlier date of March 6th.
The Vestry will meet at 8.00pm in the Carry Centre on
11th January.

Board of Management
We are grateful to the outgoing members of the Board (Helen Middleton, Nick
Jones, Owen Wilson, Jennifer Maxwell, Elaine Wolfe and the Revd William
Olhausen) who gave generously of their time and talents over the last 4 years.
We welcome to the new Board, Chris Moore, Edward Farrelly, Barbara Kelly,
Clara Richardson and the Revd Gary Dowd.
As always we extend a heartfelt thank you to our Principal who ensures the
smooth running of operations!
Christmas 2015
Well done to the staff and students who put so much work into the Carol
services this year - they were wonderful! We are grateful to those who
supported the collections which will be presented to Carmona Services and the
National Rehabilitation Hospital.

Ladies Guild: The Annual Christmas Lunch was held in the Centre in midDecember. The Guild will meet next on Tuesday 12th January in the Carry
Centre at 2.30pm. All Welcome.
Table Tennis: The table tennis meets on Mondays at 8pm in the Carry
Centre If you are interested in trying out table tennis, you would be very
welcome (and we will even lend you a bat!). For more information contact

Service & Social: Thank you to Joan and the team who organised another
enjoyable gathering in December.
The Killiney Winey Dineys: Next gathering Thursday 21st January.

The Rector is pictured presenting (on behalf of Sheep Thrills) a to Anne Louise
Kelly founder of Tuesday Trust. Anne Louise gave a most interesting insight on
their organization and what they aspire to do.
We have grown with more people coming with their ideas, consequently we are
making more, selling more and giving to more charities. We had a group visiting
the Knitting & Stitching show in the RDS where inspiration is always found for
new ideas. We have given in the last few months product and cheques to Our
Ladies Hospice, The Country Air Association, Tuesday Trust for Malawi, Bray
Refuge, The Peter McVerry Trust and the Parish. We start again on Thursday 7 th
January 2016 at 11am in the Carry Centre. Everyone welcome 3, fresh coffee

LENT 2015
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday (18th February) - join us in Holy Trinity each
Wednesday during Lent for a short service at 8pm.
During Holy Week the neighbouring parishes have decided to join forces and
have joint services.
More details will appear in the next edition of the Obelisk.
Burns Supper
It is planned to hold a Burns Supper in the Carry
Centre on Friday 29th January 2016. We hope
to have a ceilidh, real haggis (veggies will be
catered for!), a wee dram and the
encouragement to don Scottish dress

A day of the life of Maira Bailey

A Day in the Life Maria Bailey General Election
Candidate Usually up by 6.30am ready to face a busy
day. I try to get out for an early run. Ive suffered
from chronic migraines since I was a teenager and
have found that eating well and getting regular
exercise really helps me manage my condition. Once
Ive dropped my two girls to school, I head out to
meet up with my Dad, Cllr. John Bailey. We work
together daily since we were both first elected in
2004, meeting constituents, dropping leaflets,
canvassing and attending meetings. With over 65,000
households in the Dn Laoghaire Constituency, that
leaves us with a large number of homes to visit. My
day usually ends with prepping for the next day,
reading documents, packing school lunches, doing
household chores and then collapsing on the couch. I really enjoy my work and
remain passionate about serving my community. Once my husband & girls are
happy, Im happy.

Pack your Bags to California

Who doesnt look forward to their summer holidays? Usually we go somewhere in Europe
but some years ago to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, we went to California. We
flew to San Francisco staying there for a few days, viewing The Golden Gate Bridge, riding
the cable cars and visiting Alcatraz. From there, we travelled the full length of California
finishing in San Diego. Along the way, we visited Yosemite National Park, Monterey, 7 mile
drive and Los Angles. I even managed to play a round of golf at the magnificent Pebble
Beach course. We also visited Las Vegas OTT but great fun. While there, we travelled to
the majestic Grand Canyon by helicopter. What a sight, the only word for it awesome.
We crammed a lot into our time there but it was a great experience and we would
thoroughly recommend it as a holiday destination.

Food: Lussekatter / Santa Lucia Buns

St Lucia is the patron saint of the Blind. She was venerated by Catholics, Anglicans &
Lutherans in Scandinavian countries where the long winter days are so dark. Lucia is said to
have risen before dawn to bake the buns and deliver them to the poor of the country-side.
This is why the buns are shaped like a pair of eyes, conjuring an image of eyes in the
darkness. It was a tradition in Sweden that the eldest daughter of the house and her mother
baked the buns and brought them to the bachelors of their village. The girl dressed in white
and crowned as being 'Lucia-Bride', wore a seven-piece Lucia Crown of candles to find their
way in the dark. Lucia meaning light. We light our Lucia Crown at the break of day on Dec.
13th in honour of our Swedish friends and celebrate darkness and light. Made a good cup of
coffee and enjoy these buns served warm, smothered with butter. These buns can be made
ahead, frozen and reheated. This saves my daughter having to stay up all night preparing
them!
Ingredients (makes 32)
200g unsalted butter. 250mls milk. 50 g fresh yeast. 1 lightly beaten egg. 85g raisins. 1tsp salt.
165g caster sugar. tsp finely chopped saffron threads or pinch of turmeric. 900g plain flour.
Method
Melt the butter over a medium heat, add the milk, heat until lukewarm. Stir the salt, sugar
and yeast into the warm mixture, leave to work for 10 mins. Gradually add the remaining
ingredients stirring until a smooth dough forms. Do not worry if the dough is a little sticky.
Cover the bowl with a dry tea towel, leave to prove [rise] for 45 to 65 mins until doubled in
size. Punch back the dough and knead 30 seconds, or until smooth. Divide into four pieces,
break each quarter into eight equal pieces. Shape each piece in to a 20 cm length, then form
into an s-shape, tuck in the ends to form an 8-shape and pinch the ends to join. Place on a
tray lined with parchment, cover with a tea towel and prove for a further 40 mins. Preheat
the oven to 200 c/400 f/gas mark 6. Place a raisin in each of the rounds, made when forming
the 8-shape. Beat an egg with 1 tablespoons milk, brush the buns and bake for 20 mins. The
buns should be a pale golden-brown when done.

Christmas in Killiney: As I write final preparations are being made for carol
services, flower decorating, music and entertainment to all involved thank you!
No matter how small your contribution every little helps make Christmas what
it is in Killiney.
Christmas Sale: Our Parish School was the centre of activity in the days
leading up to the Christmas Sale on Saturday 6th December. From cakes to
woolly jumpers and sausage rolls to Christmas decorations there were lots of
treats and bargains to be had on what turned out to be a beautiful December
morning. The climax of the event was the long awaited arrival of a very special
guest, Santa Claus, who arrived in a chauffeur (the Rector!) driven SMART car
(Yes! It was a tight squeeze.). Many thanks to all those who donated items,
spent the week cooking and baking, sorted out stalls and in any way supported
the sale. Special thanks to Sandra Moore who in true form organized things with
great efficiency and good humour. The good news is that over 6,000 was
collected. Well done and thank you!
Charity Christmas Cards: Thank you to all those who supported the sale of
Charity Christmas Cards on Sunday 9th November. In particular thanks to
Dorothy Barrett for organizing the event. We are delighted to report that over
1,200 was raised.
Charity Giving: During December many gifts of clothing, food and money
were brought to the Church, these were handed over to Alice Leahy (TRUST) in
late December. At the gift service many brought toys which were given to
Dublin Childrens Charity. To all who gaveTHANK YOU!

Green Fingers

CONSIDERABLE TALENT OR ABILITY TO GROW PLANTS

This is not a skill I have been blest with but I really do like splashes of colour in a
garden particularly if the all pervasive colour is green from either, trees, a hedge
or grass (or all three)! It is essential to break up the look of a garden, even a
little bit, and of course it may be arranged on a season by season basis with
different flowers having their day! or week!! There are so many local garden
centres that travelling to one for a look or indeed a sniff is a most pleasant
and enjoyable experience and a short stay will not necessarily be an expensive
one. Lots of special offers are available and filling a few pots upon your return
is not too time consuming! Planting a number of small plants in large pots each
season allows for the rotation of look and colour in any garden. Spring brings
yellows with Daffodils as well as Bluebells and Snowdrops, Tulips and Cyclamen.
Spring and summer merge with Iris, Poppy, Geraniums, Lupins, short and tall
Daisies, Chrysanthemums, Pansies and Begonias. A border of Lavender brings
bees, their continuous hum, as well as a delicious aroma. With flowering
heathers at the end of summer as the season moves into autumn. Throughout
the whole time roses will flower and die and flower again and bring really rich
colour to any garden, large or small.

going into hospital, and will be pleased to offer pastoral support.

the life of any family and in the life of the church. When considering getting
married please check possible dates with the Rector before confirming

Alastair Jones with his wife Katie being presented with his National Bravery
Awards certificate by the Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett at the Awards
Ceremony in Farmleigh House. Alastair was awarded the National Bravery
Certificate for saving the life of a three year old toddler from drowning at
Seapoint on an evening in July 2011.
