Dental Unit

A) Dentist console (instrument panel, control panel)

a) it could have 6 posts (tubings with connector) or less than that,
for:
- 2 high speed handpiece
- 1 low speed handpiece
- micromotor
- scaling device
-3-way syringe (spray air, water)
- +/- curing light
- We have to ask the company if in the price of dental unit are included
the handpieces (highspeed, low-speed, micromotor , ultrasonic scaler ,
curing light) as well or we have to buy them separately.
- The tubings with connector need to have 4 holes (Midwest type) the
standard in US and Europe.
- The tubings operarating by air (pneumatic tubing) can be replaced by
tubings with light (for fiber optic handpieces) or by tubing with electric
micromotor ?
- There is a safety system for activating only one instrument, deactivating
the other ones?
- Are the tubings up or down? It is preferably to hang down
b) dentist controlled system by touchpad ( pacient chair position ,
+/- operation lamp, etc).
c) X-film viewer ( a small illuminated screen where the X ray is
better seen)
d) top- mounted instrument tray with air brake
- The unit arm that support the dentist console and instrument tray
has to be adjusted on vertical and horizontal position according to dentist
working position.
B) Pacient chair
- It can be controlled from dentist console , assistant post or
multifunctional foot pedal . The most hygienic way is foot pedal.
- Has it Trendelenburg position option on control panel ? (the dentist set
quickly the chair in this horizontal position when the pacient is sick ).

- The headrest is simple or multi articulated ? ( the multi articulated

type can be adjust to pacient head , can be lifted or moved forward and
backward).
- some of ARI patient chair have only one armrest ( the left one ) ,
some have both of them . It is preferable to have a mobile right
armrest ( not fixed) that permits to be removed sometimes for a
better access to patient .
- the patient chair is better to be covered by leather, without any
sewing , that can easy be wiped and decontaminated using special
products . Ask what kind of products can be used .
C) Assistant post
It can has only saliva ejectors ; some units also have here a spray
air/water, a curing lamp , a control panel .
D) Hydric group
a) Water purified system
- All 6 dental unit from ARI have it . Ask if it is a filter for current water
supply.
- Some dental units work only with current water supply but it has to be
purified . Otherwise it can block the water spray and the handpieces .
- Other dental units work only with distilled water from a water tank that
needs to be manualy filled. The distilled water can be bought from the
market or can be obtained with the aid of a special apparatus Distilator
Drink . We also need distilled water for autoclave.
- There are units that work with distilled water for water spray and
handpieces , and with current water for patient glass and cuspidor
cleaning.
- There are also units with a switch (commutator) for choosing the water
source at handpieces respectively current water, or distilled water from a
small water container.
b) Water heating system
- This system is available for units with 2 water / air spray ( 3 way-syringe)
. One is for cold water , another one for warm water. The reason is that
some patients have toothache at cold water.
c) Water supply and flush cuspidor (spittoon) system
- Ask if the ceramic cuspidor can be removed for a better cleaning or even
for decontamination. Is there water at cuspidor for permanent cleaning of

saliva, blood etc . during the treatments ? Does it have a filter for big
particles , pieces?

- The device that provides water for patient glass

is evident and
positioned in a more hygienic way at DU- 8900 Luxury and less at
another ones. Can it be removed for decontamination ?

d) Water suction and saliva ejector

- the dental unit has usually 2 saliva ejectors , one with low suction and
one with high suction , both of them working with air from compressor .
That means that the compressor needs to have a bigger capacity ( 50 l )
so that it can provide air for handpieces and for saliva ejectors as well. If
the capacity of compressor is too small , it has to set off very often and in
that way its engine breaks down faster.
- another option is to have the low suction saliva ejector installed at
compressor and high suction ejector installed at an electric vacuum pump
bought separately, with high capacity of suction. Ask if the dental unit is
eligible for something like that.
- there is the option to have 2 saliva ejector( belonging to the unit )
activated by compressor, and a 3-rd saliva ejector, attached to unit
,activated by pump .
- there are 2 types of pump , one with wet suction and one with dry
suction , that have to be connected at saliva ejectors , electricity ,
sewerage . The wet suction pump has to be also connected at current
water supply . Usually the pumps are very noisy and need to be isolated in
a soundproof box (only if the manufacturer agree with this; they can
recommend to let the pump uncovered for a better ventilation ). To install
the pump in a separated room is another solution.
- there are also mobile pump that needs to be emptied manually , and
fixed pump connected at sewerage.
- the pump offers a very good suction needed especially in implantology
for a better visibility .
- some kinds of dental units need a separated pump for suction ( the
saliva ejectors cant be connected at compressor ) and have a special
preparation for that . Ask the company about that .
E) Operation lamp

- operation lamp with sensor that starts to light at hand movement

- operation lamp powered by means of dentist console , multifunctional
foot pedal or manually ( by a switch ).
- it can has 3 light intensities or less
- ask if the light bulb can be easy installed or removed or you have to call
a specialist for that
- it can be without shadows , with cold light
- the arm that support the lamp has to be adjustable in height

F) foot pedal
- round foot pedal triggers ( sets off) only the handpieces ?
- quadrate foot pedal ?
- multifunctional foot pedal controls the movements of handpieces ,
the positions of dental chair , the cleaning of cuspidor , the lamp light
intensity .
G) Dentist stool
- needs to be adjustable in height
Some dental units have a general switch to control the energy , water and
air . There are not wires on the floor , everything being integrated in unit
bottom.

Intraoral camera = Endoscope

Ask about:
- is connected at computer USB ( USB system, plug & play )
- the images management software is included
- function 200M = the oral area of interest is magnified without any other
software help
- WHITE- BLACK mode = the X rays, placed on X viewer ,are captured
(on film) and transformed in digital images that can be integrated in
patient medical record.
- antifog lens
- automatic focus = is no need to adjust it
- compatible with all Windows versions

- touch- mouse incorporate = you can control the computer mouse

directly by cameras.

Compressor
- There are 2 types : with oil and oilless
- the compressors with oil are less used nowadays. The advantage is that
they are quiet . the disadvantage is that oil particles reach in teeth
prepared cavities through the handpieces and prevent a good bonding of
composite materials .
- The oilless compressors are more used . The disadvantage is that they
are very noisy . Ones are completely uncovered and the manufacturer
recommend to be let like that for a good ventilation . Other ones are
designed partially covered or completely covered in a soundproof box.
They are more quiet and more aesthetic .
- The 24 l capacity can activate only one dental unit and also its 2 saliva
ejectors. Some dentists that work hard all day long complain that this
small compressor cant deal with the working of handpieces and saliva
ejectors too. The engine breaks down very fast. They often choose to buy
a suction pump for saliva ejectors.
- The 50 l capacity can activate 2 dental units and even 3 if the suction is
provided by electric pumps . It can be a solution for activating a single
dental unit with its handpieces and saliva ejectors.
